Share of electric vehicles (BEV/PHV/FCV)
Sales of electric vehicles in the 12 major countries and the 3 Nordic countries of Norway, Sweden, and Finland (15 countries in total) reached 1.768 million units in December. It was down 4.6% from the previous month and down 2.6% from the same month last year. The share of electric vehicles in December was 30.5%, down 1.5 points from the previous month and up 1.0 points from the same month last year. This was largely due to decreased sales in major markets such as China and the United States. For the full year of 2025, electric vehicle sales increased 18.0% y/y to 18.124 million units, accounting for 27.7% of total vehicle sales volume. China accounted for more than 70% of all electric vehicle sales with 12.961 million units for the full year.
HV (hybrid vehicle) sales totaled 445,000 units in December, down 3.2% m/m, and also down 9.0% y/y. In December, the HV market share was 7.7%, down 0.2 points from the previous month and down 0.3 points from the same month last year. For the full year of 2025, HV sales totaled 5.478 million units, up 9.8% from the same period last year, and accounted for 8.4% of total vehicle sales.
EV sales in 2025 exceeded the previous year's level and reached a record high. In particular, until the end of the third quarter (Q3), sales were strong, increasing 24.9% y/y, but in Q4 sales slowed down in the two major markets of China and the United States, and the growth rate (18.0% y/y) fell short of the previous year's growth rate (27.1% y/y).
The year 2025 saw a series of changes in the environment related to electric vehicles, beginning with the Trump tariffs, followed by export restrictions on semiconductors and rare earths, and a review of CO2 emission standards in the EU. Sales of EVs are still showing signs of increasing due to subsidies and other measures to promote their adoption. China drafted and issued the "Detailed Regulations for the Implementation of the Automobile Replacement Subsidy in 2026" in light of the situation where new vehicle sales, especially new energy vehicles (NEVs), have increased under the 2025 Automobile Replacement Promotion Policy. In 2026, it will be necessary to continue to check sales trends by model and powertrain, based on the situation surrounding EVs in each country and region and the electrification policies of manufacturers.
