SDV / AI-DV - Challenges of the Automotive Industry
Automotive World Autumn 2026: Presentation by Toyota
Summary
This report summarizes a presentation on SDV (Software Defined Vehicle), specifically “SDV / AI-DV: Challenges of the Automotive Industry” delivered by Kenichi Murata, Fellow at the Software Development Center of Toyota Motor Corporation, presented at the “Exhibition of Advanced Automotive Technologies” (organized by RX Japan Ltd.) at the Automotive World (Autumn) 2026 expo held from Wednesday, September 9, to Friday, September 11, 2026, in Halls 1–3 at the Makuhari Messe convention center near Tokyo.
SDV is a concept that defines and evolves a car's functions using software (SW), and it requires a shift from the traditional hardware-centric approach to a software-centric development process. A consistent structural design for the entire vehicle (the vehicle's operating system/OS), software product line development, continuous testing using a CI/CD (Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery/Deployment) pipeline, and the introduction of OTA updates and a data integration platform are essential. In addition, incorporating the latest generation of AI into vehicles as "AI-DV," which not only provides functions such as autonomous driving, but also utilizes multi-agent AI and other technologies throughout the entire development process, including design document review and test generation, achieves high-quality and rapid SDV development.
Trends in SDV-related technologies
With SDV, addressing the need for continuous value enhancement of vehicles and increased development efficiency has become urgent, making the standardization of software infrastructure and the provision of updated functions via OTA* essential. Furthermore, with the widespread adoption of generative AI, an evolution known as "AI-DV" (Artificial Intelligence Defined Vehicle) has begun, aiming to automate the development process itself and enhance the sophistication of in-vehicle AI.
OTA* (Over The Air): A technology that allows for the remote updating of vehicle software and control programs via wireless communication.
