Commercial Vehicle Sensors, E/E Architecture, and Redundant Control
IAA Transportation 2026: Technologies supporting autonomous driving and SDVs
Summary
The IAA Transportation 2026, organized by the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), was held at the Deutsche Messe exhibition grounds in Hanover, Germany, from September 15 to 20, 2026, with a dedicated press day on September 14.
The event concluded with 1,589 exhibitors from 46 countries and more than 150 world debuts and innovations, further strengthening its position as the leading international platform for commercial vehicles, logistics, and transport solutions. According to the VDA, more than 140,000 visitors attended the exhibition, including over 113,000 trade visitors.
Against this backdrop, a key technology trend at IAA Transportation 2026 was the shift toward highly automated and software-defined commercial vehicles. Major suppliers presented technologies covering the automated-driving chain, from cameras, radar, and LiDAR for environmental perception to high-performance computing, centralized and zonal E/E architectures, and redundant braking and steering systems designed to maintain vehicle control in the event of a system failure.
In particular, the exhibits showed that the development of Level 4 autonomous trucks is expanding beyond individual sensors and driver-assistance functions toward integrated vehicle architectures incorporating redundancy, fallback functions, high-availability control systems, and lifecycle software capabilities such as over-the-air updates. Several suppliers are also preparing key systems for series production or market launch from 2027, indicating progress toward the practical implementation of technologies supporting highly automated commercial vehicles.
This report focuses on the exhibits of AUMOVIO, Bosch, Knorr-Bremse, ZF, and Aptiv with particular attention to technologies supporting highly automated driving, system redundancy, vehicle control, and the transition toward software-defined vehicle architectures.
