COVESA Activities Brief: From OS Development to Data Utilization
Automotive World Autumn 2026: Presentation by Renesas Electronics
Summary
This report summarizes COVESA activities as presented in an SDV (Software-Defined Vehicle) presentation at the “Exhibition of Advanced Automotive Technologies” (organized by RX Japan Ltd.) at the Automotive World (Autumn) 2026 expo held from Wednesday, September 9, to Friday, September 11, 2026, in Halls 1–3 at the Makuhari Messe convention center near Tokyo.
Overview of COVESA Activities (Presentation by Renesas Electronics)
GENIVI, which had been promoting open-source Linux development for IVI (in-vehicle infotainment) systems, shifted its primary focus from “operating system (OS) construction” to “data utilization” to respond to the trend toward SDV (Software-Defined Vehicle) implementation, and evolved into COVESA in 2021. COVESA (Connected Vehicle Systems Alliance) expanded its scope to address the broader ecosystem of the SDV, defining high-level data specifications, such as the development of common vehicle data models (VSS/VDM), collaboration with the AOSP (Android Open Source Project), and the standardization of commercial vehicle fleet data. Through standardization in these collaborative areas, participating companies are able to reduce development costs and accelerate product development.
Trends in SDV-Related Technologies
While SDV has provided OEMs with a mechanism to “continuously deliver value to customers,” relying solely on in-car/in-vehicle information limits the value that can be provided; therefore, information from external sources (out-car/cloud) is essential. For companies that provide information services from the cloud to vehicles, if the terminology used for various in-vehicle components (referred to as VSS (Vehicle Signal Specification) by COVESA) and the APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) that connect software differ from one OEM to another, development would have to be carried out separately for each OEM, resulting in enormous development costs and time. Therefore, the automotive industry as a whole requires the standardization of VSS, APIs, and other elements, and standardization bodies are working to establish common standards.
