GlobalData Global Light Vehicle Sales Update (April 2026)
Global LV sales fell 3.4%, 7.14 mn units and the selling rate improved to 89 mn units/year
2026/05/22
Summary
- In April, the global light vehicle (LV) selling rate improved to 89 mn units/year, but it remained nearly 7% below the 92 mn units/year recorded a year earlier. Overall sales declined 3.4% YoY.
- Global LV sales continued to trail 2025’s pace last month, as a pronounced slowdown in China weighed on overall growth. China is lagging because policy support has been slower and less impactful in reaching consumers this year, most notably the delayed and uneven rollout of trade-in incentives, while price normalization and broader economic headwinds are also tempering demand. Meanwhile, sales in the US and Western Europe remain resilient despite a deteriorating global economic backdrop: US volumes outperformed expectations even against a tough April comparison that was boosted last year by tariff-related pull-forward demand, and Western Europe continues to benefit from the increasing availability of lower-priced models and supportive EV policy.
