Competitiveness of the Toyota Tundra in U.S. Full-Size Pickup Truck Market
The U.S. full-size pickup truck market has long been dominated by the Detroit Three automakers (GM, Ford, and Stellantis), leaving Toyota struggling to gain market share. Tundra sales in January–September 2026 declined 0.8% year on year to 110,080 units, remaining well behind the leading models. Toyota introduced the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain for the Tundra in the 2022 model year, aiming to improve fuel efficiency while delivering higher torque and better acceleration through motor assistance. This has helped strengthen its competitiveness. For the 2027 model year, Toyota adds the Trailhunter, an overlanding-focused variant, to broaden its appeal to outdoor and recreational users. By combining strong towing capability, high output from its hybrid powertrain, a refined interior, and serious off-road capability, the Tundra aims to serve a wide range of needs, from work to recreational use.
