Major R&D Facilities

-R&D activities are conducted at the Technical Centers located within the Nagano Plant and in the Okaya-City, Nagano Pref. Japan.

 

R&D Activities

-R&D activities on lowering friction, controlling heat, reducing weight, cleaning exhaust gas, as well as developing products that use alternative fuels such as biofuels and CNG.

-Development of production methods for automating inline measuring so as to make products that offer greater precision, are drastically lower in cost, and minimize energy consumption in production.

-Conduct activities to transfer new technologies to overseas operations, ensure products offer a consistent level of quality worldwide by forming partnerships with partners outside Japan, and develop new products and technology for customers outside Japan.

-Strengthening initiatives in non-powertrain parts in response to the rapidly growing electric-vehicle market. In applying new technologies, the Company is making products more lightweight by combining various materials such as aluminum and plastics; and making seals mainly from rubber.

R&D Achievements
<Powertrain Parts>

  1. Piston Rings
    -Commercializing ultra-low-friction and low-oil-consumption oil rings to reduce fuel consumption
    -Commercialization of highly durable friction material DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) film, to improve reliability 
    -Innovative piston rings manufactured on a production line that significantly reduces costs, in order to meet the need for lower priced products
  2. Cylinder liners
    -Commercialization of small-diameter, thin-walled, highly thermal-conductive cylinder liners for compact engines, to improve fuel efficiency and reliability
    -Commercialization of heat-control liners, to lower friction
    -Establishment of low-friction liners with inner-surface properties to increase reliability
    -Commercialized a gravity-cast "ASLOCK" liner
  3. Valve seats/valve guides
    -Commercialization of highly wear-resistant valve-seat material in response to alternative fuels.
    -Valve seats manufactured on a production line that significantly reduces costs, in order to meet the need for lower priced products.
    -Commercialization of highly thermal-conductive valves

  1. Plastic and rubber products
    -Commercialization of plastic seal rings for transmissions
    -High-precision, automotive rubber seal parts
    -Commercialization of plastic vanes for vacuum pumps

    -Commercialized a brake-drum insert applying "ASLOCK" liner technology
