China vehicle sales in 2017 reach 28,879,000 units, up 3% y/y
On January 11, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for 2017.
Production totaled approximately 29,015,000 units, a 3.2% increase on a year-over-year (y/y) basis, while sales totaled 28,879,000 units, a 3% increase y/y. These growth rates were 11.3 and 10.6 percentage points lower than those in 2016, respectively.
Passenger vehicles: Production reached 24,807,000 units, a 1.6% increase y/y; while sales reached 24,718,000 units, a 1.4% increase y/y. The y/y growth rates were both 1.6 percentage points lower than those for the overall market. Production of passenger vehicles accounts for 85.5% of the total production, while sales account for 85.6%. These proportions were 1.3 and 1.4 percentage points lower than those in 2016, respectively.
Commercial vehicles: Production reached 4,209,000 units, up 13.8% y/y; while sales reached 4,161,000 units, up 14% y/y. These growth rates were 5.8 and 8.2 percentage points higher than those in 2016, respectively.
New energy vehicles: Production totaled 794,000 units, a 53.8% increase y/y; while sales totaled 777,000 units, a 53.3% increase y/y. These growth rates were 2.1 and 0.3 percentage points higher than those in 2016, respectively. Production of electric passenger vehicles reached 478,000 units, up 81.7% y/y, while EV sales reached 468,000 units, up 82.1% y/y. Production of plug-in hybrid passenger vehicles reached 114,000 units, up 40.3% y/y, while PHV sales reached 111,000 units, up 39.4% y/y. Production of commercial EVs reached 188,000 units, up 22.2% y/y, while sales reached 184,000 units, up 21.5% y/y. Production of commercial PHVs reached 14,000 units, a 24.9% y/y decline, while sales reached 14,000 units, a 26.6% decline.
Exports from China totaled 891,000 vehicles, a sharp increase of 25.8% y/y, with 639,000 passenger vehicles (up 34% y/y) and 252,000 commercial vehicles (down 8.9% y/y) shipped overseas. This is the first increase after four years of declining exports.
CAAM forecasts that the market demand will be 29,980,000 units in 2018 (Market demand = total sales - exports + imports). The growth rate will be 3% y/y, with 3% for passenger vehicles and 1% for commercial vehicles.

China sales increase 0.7% y/y to 2.958 million units in November
On December 11, 2017 the China Association of Automobile Manufactures (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for November 2017. Production and sales showed increases on both a month-over-month (m/m) basis and year-over-year (y/y) basis. Y/y growth of production and sales for January to November stayed at 3% to 4%. Passenger vehicle production and sales saw growth of around 2%, a lower y/y growth compared to total vehicle data, while commercial vehicles maintained growth of around 15%, higher y/y than total vehicle data.
Overall vehicle production in November totaled 3.08 million units, up 2.3% y/y, while sales reached 2.958 million units, up 0.7% y/y. YTD production for the period January to November totaled 25.999 million units, up 3.9% y/y, and YTD sales totaled 25.845 million units, up 3.6% y/y.
Passenger vehicle production in November was 2.669 million units, a 1.2% increase y/y, while sales were 2.589 million units, basically the same compared to last year. Sales of passenger vehicles with engines that were 1.6L or lower declined 1.3% y/y to 1.801 million units, which accounted for 69.6% of all passenger vehicles sold.
In the commercial vehicle market, production totaled 411,000 units, up 10.4% y/y. Sales reached 368,000 units, up 5.6% y/y.
As for new energy vehicles (NEVs), production reached 122,000 units, up 70.1% y/y, and sales totaled 119,000 units, up 83.0% y/y. Among NEVs, EV production reached 105,000 units, up 64.3% y/y, while sales reached 102,000 units, up 74.9% y/y. Plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHV) production totaled 17,000 units, for a y/y increase of 117.0%, and PHV sales totaled 17,000 units for a y/y increase of 154.0%.
Exports for November reached 88,000 units, up 18.1% y/y. YTD exports total 797,000 units, up 26.6% y/y ( a 2.3% decline compared to that of January to November). This figure included 564,000 passenger vehicles (up 34.6% y/y) and 232,000 commercial vehicles (up 10.5% y/y).

CAAM releases data on China’s auto sales in October
On November 10, 2017, the China Association of Automobile Manufactures (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for October, 2017. While production and sales showed a slight decline on a month-over-month (m/m) basis, growth continued on a year-over-year (y/y) basis. Y/y growth of production and sales for January to October stayed at 4% to 5%. Passenger vehicle production and sales saw growth of 2% to 3%, a lower y/y growth compared to total vehicle data, while commercial vehicles maintained growth of around 17%, higher y/y than total vehicle data.
Overall vehicle production in October totaled 2.604 million units, up 0.7% y/y, while sales reached 2.704 million units, up 2% y/y, YTD production through Jan-Oct totaled 22.957 million units, up 4.3% y/y, and YTD sales totaled 22.927 million units, up 4.1% y/y.
Passenger vehicle production in October was 2.225 million units, a 2.7% decline y/y, while sales were 2.352 million units, a 0.4% increase y/y. Sales of passenger vehicles with engines that were 1.6L or lower declined 2.5% y/y to 1.637 million units, which accounted for 69.6% of all passenger vehicles sold.
In the commercial vehicle market, production totaled 379,000 units, up 26.6% y/y. Sales reached 351,000 units, up 14.8% y/y.
As for new energy vehicles (NEVs), production reached 92,000 units, up 85.9% y/y, and sales totaled 91,000 units, up 106.7% y/y. Among NEVs, EV production reached 77,000 units, up 76.3% y/y, while sales reached 77,000 units, up 95.8% y/y. Plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHV) production totaled 14,000 units, for a y/y increase of 163.6%, and PHV sales totaled 14,000 units for a y/y increase of 194.0%.
Exports for October reached 88,000 units, up rapid growth of 42.2% y/y. YTD exports total 715,000 units, up 28.9% y/y ( a 2.6% rise compared to that of January to October), which included 497,000 passenger vehicles (up 36.5% y/y) and 218,000 commercial vehicles (up 14.2% y/y).

China sales increase 5.7% y/y to 2.71 million units in September
On October 12, 2017, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for September 2017. Both production and sales were up on an m/m and y/y basis, with significant rises on m/m. Growth rates of production and sales for Jan-Sep period continued to remain in the range of 4-5%. Among them, the growth rates of passenger vehicles remain lower at about 3% y/y while commercial vehicle maintained healthy at 16-18%.
Production for September increased by 27.6% m/m, and 5.5% y/y to 2.671 million units, while sales rose by 23.9% m/m and 5.7% y/y to 2.709 million units.
Total rates for the period Jan-Sep showed production up y/y by 4.8% to 20.349 million units, while sales improved y/y by 4.5% to 20.225 million units.
Passenger vehicle production for September rose by 28.4% m/m, and 2.9% y/y to 2.297 million units. Sales grew by 24.9% m/m and 3.3% y/y to 2.343 million units. Sales of passenger vehicles with engines of 1.6 liters or less were flat y/y at 1.617 million units, and their share of the total passenger vehicle market declined by 2.2% points y/y to 69.0%.
Commercial vehicle production in September increased by 23.3% m/m and 25.0% y/y to 374,000 units. Commercial vehicle sales rose 17.9% m/m and 23.9% y/y to 367,000 units.
Production of new energy vehicles (NEVs) for September shot up by 79.7% y/y to 77,000 units, while NEV sales also rose dramatically by 79.1% y/y to 78,000 units. Among NEVs, EV production sharply increased by 85.2% y/y to 64,000 units, and sales increased by 83.4% y/y to 64,000 units. Production of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) also increased by 57.6% y/y to 13,000 units, while sales showed a similar rise of 61.9% y/y to 14,000 units.
Exports continued their healthy trend for September and showed an increase of 13.0% m/m and 38.9% y/y to 83,000 units. Total exports for the Jan-Sep period went up 26.3% from the same period last year to 623,000 units. Breaking down by segment, passenger vehicle exports improved by 35.6% y/y to 434,000 units, while commercial vehicle exports increased by 9.0% to 188,000 units.

China sales increase 5.3% y/y to 2.19 million units in August
On September 11, 2017, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for August 2017. Both production and sales were up on an m/m and y/y basis, with the good conditions expected to continue. Due to many companies giving employees leave for the hot weather conditions, sales exceeded production by roughly 100,000 units, slightly reducing pressure on inventories.  
Production and sales over the period from January to August has maintained a growth rate of between 4 and 5%. Passenger vehicle segment growth continued at a rate of 2-3%, and commercial vehicle segment growth held a healthy 15-17% growth rate.
Production for August increased by 1.6% m/m, and 4.8% y/y to 2.093 million units, while sales rose by 10.9% m/m and 5.3% y/y to 2.186 million units.
Total rates for the period Jan-Aug showed production up y/y by 4.7% to 17.678 million units, while sales improved y/y by 4.3% to 17.511 million units.
Passenger vehicle production for August rose by 1.8% m/m, and 3.6% y/y to 1.79 million units. Sales grew by 11.7% m/m and 4.1% y/y to 1.875 million units. Sales of passenger vehicles with engines of 1.6 liters or less fell 0.5% y/y to 1.268 million units, and their share of the total passenger vehicle market declined by 3.2 % points y/y to 67.6%.
Commercial vehicle production in August increased by 0.8% m/m and 13.2% y/y to 303,000 units. Commercial vehicle sales rose 6.2% m/m and 12.8% y/y to 311,000 units.
Production of new energy vehicles (NEVs) for August shot up by 67.3% y/y to 72,000 units, while NEV sales also rose dramatically by 76.3% y/y to 68,000 units. Among NEVs, EV production sharply increased by 79.6% y/y to 58,000 units, and sales nearly doubled after posting an increase of 95.5% y/y to 56,000 units. Production of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) also increased by 29.4% y/y to 14,000 units, while sales showed a similar rise of 21.6% y/y to 12,000 units.
Exports continued their healthy trend for August and showed an increase of 6.7% m/m and 17.0% y/y to 74,000 units. Total exports for the Jan-Aug period went up 24.6% from the same period last year to 539,000 units. Breaking down by segment, passenger vehicle exports improved by 34.2% y/y to 373,000 units, while commercial vehicle exports slightly increased by 7.3% to 166,000 units.

China sales increase 6.2% y/y to 1.97 million units in July
On August 11, 2017, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for July 2017.
Production totaled approximately 2.059 million units, a 5.0% decrease m/m basis and a 4.8% increase y/y.  Sales were approximately 1.971 million units, down 9.2% m/m and up 6.2% y/y.
Year-to-date (YTD) production from January through July reached 15.585 million units, a 4.7% increase y/y, while sales reached 15.325 million units, a 4.1% rise y/y. Growth rates for production and sales were favorable by 0.1% points and 0.3% points compared to January through June respectively.
Passenger car production in July was approximately 1.759 million units, an 4.7% decrease m/m and a 2.0% increase y/y. Passenger car sales were approximately 1.678 million units, down 8.4% m/m and up 4.3% y/y. Sales of small vehicles with 1.6-liter or smaller engines declined 1.0% y/y to approximately 1.113 million units, which accounted for 66.3% of all passenger vehicles sold in the month.
Commercial vehicle production in July was approximately 301,000 units, a 6.8% decrease m/m and a 24.7% increase y/y. Commercial vehicle sales were approximately 293,000 units, down 13.9% m/m and up 18.4% y/y.
As for new energy vehicles, production in July reached 59,000 units, a 52.6% increase y/y, and sales totaled 56,000 units, a 55.2% gain y/y. By vehicle type of new energy vehicles, electric vehicle (EV) production reached 46,000 units, up 69.6% y/y, and EV sales totaled 45,000 units, up 70.2% y/y. Production of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) totaled 12,000 units for a y/y increase of 10.0%, and PHEV sales totaled 12,000 units for a y/y rise of 16.3%.
Vehicle exports in July reached approximately 69,000 units, a m/m decrease of 14.1% and a y/y increase of 23.7%. YTD exports totaled approximately 465,000 units (up 25.9% y/y), with passenger vehicles reaching 321,000 units (up 36.2% y/y) and commercial vehicles reaching 145,000 units (up 7.9% y/y).

China sales increase 4.5% y/y to 2.17 million units in June
On July 11, 2017, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for June 2017. Production and sales showed marginal increases on both a month-over-month (m/m) basis and a year-over-year (y/y) basis. The growth rates of the first half of 2017 for passenger car production and sales were slowed, but commercial vehicle sales and production remained favorable.
Production totaled approximately 2.167 million units, a 3.9% increase m/m basis and a 5.4% increase y/y.  Sales were approximately 2.172 million units, up 3.6% m/m and up 4.5% y/y.
Year-to-date (YTD) production from January through June reached 13.526 million units, a 4.6% increase y/y, while sales reached 13.354 million units, a 3.8% rise y/y. Growth rates for sales and production was slowed by 1.9% points y/y and 4.3% points y/y respectively.
Passenger car production in June was approximately 1.845 million units, an 5.6% increase m/m and a 3.7% increase y/y. Passenger car sales were approximately 1.832 million units, up 4.6% m/m and up 2.3% y/y. Sales of small vehicles with 1.6-liter or smaller engines declined 4.4% y/y to approximately 1.214 million units, which accounted for 66.3% of all passenger vehicles sold in the month.
Commercial vehicle production in June was approximately 323,000 units, a 4.9% decrease m/m and a 16.4% increase y/y. Commercial vehicle sales were approximately 340,000 units, down 1.4% m/m and up 18.4% y/y.
As for new energy vehicles, production in June reached 65,000 units, a 43.4% increase y/y, and sales totaled 59,000 units, a 33.0% gain y/y. By vehicle type of new energy vehicles, electric vehicle (EV) production reached 54,000 units, up 52.9% y/y, and EV sales totaled 48,000 units, up 41.4% y/y. Production of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) totaled 11,000 units for a y/y increase of 10.1%, and PHEV sales totaled 11,000 units for a y/y rise of 5.3%.
Vehicle exports in June reached approximately 81,000 units, a m/m increase of 14.6% and a y/y increase of 18.8%. YTD exports totaled approximately 396,000 units (up 26.2% y/y), with passenger vehicles reaching 273,000 units (up 36.5% y/y) and commercial vehicles reaching 123,000 units (up 8.1% y/y).

China sales decline 0.1% y/y to 2.10 million units in May
On June 12, 2017, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for May 2017. Production totaled approximately 2.087 million units, a 2.4% decrease on a month-over-month (m/m) basis and a 0.7% increase on a year-over-year (y/y) basis. Sales were approximately 2.096 million units, up 0.6% m/m and down 0.1% y/y.
Year-to-date (YTD) production from January through May reached 11.358 million units, a 4.5% increase y/y, while sales reached 11.182 million units, a 3.7% rise y/y.
Passenger car production in May was approximately 1.748 million units, an 2.0% decrease m/m and a 1.8% fall y/y. Passenger car sales were approximately 1.751 million units, up 1.7% m/m and down 2.6% y/y. Sales of small vehicles with 1.6-liter or smaller engines declined 9.2% y/y to approximately 1.154 million units, which accounted for 65.9% of all passenger vehicles sold in the month.
Commercial vehicle production in May was approximately 339,000 units, a 4.6% decrease m/m and a 15.6% increase y/y. Commercial vehicle sales were approximately 345,000 units, down 4.7% m/m and up 15.2% y/y.
As for new energy vehicles, production in May reached 51,000 units, a 38.2% increase y/y, and sales totaled 45,000 units, a 28.4% gain y/y. By vehicle type of new energy vehicles, electric vehicle (EV) production reached 44,000 units, up 52.5% y/y, and EV sales totaled 39,000 units, up 49.0% y/y. Production of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) totaled 8,000 units for a y/y decrease of 9.3%, and PHEV sales totaled 7,000 units for a y/y decline of 28.3%.
Vehicle exports in May reached approximately 70,000 units, a m/m increase of 3.9% and a significant y/y increase of 25.6%. YTD exports totaled approximately 316,000 units (up 28.2% y/y), with passenger vehicles reaching 219,000 units (up 39.5% y/y) and commercial vehicles reaching 97,000 units (up 8.4% y/y).

China sales decline 2.2% y/y to 2.08 million units in April
On May 11, 2017, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for April 2017. Production totaled approximately 2.138 million units, a 17.9% decrease on a month-over-month (m/m) basis and a 1.9% decline on a year-over-year (y/y) basis. Sales were approximately 2.084 million units, down 18.1% m/m and down 2.2% y/y. Production and sales fell significantly from the previous month and declined slightly from April 2016 due to slower demand from end consumers.
Year-to-date (YTD) production from January through April reached 9.271 million units, a 5.4% increase y/y, while sales reached 9.086 million units, a 4.6% rise y/y.
Passenger car production in April was approximately 1.783 million units, an 18.5% decrease m/m and a 3.3% fall y/y. Passenger car sales were approximately 1.722 million units, down 17.8% m/m and down 3.7% y/y. Sales of small vehicles with 1.6-liter or smaller engines declined 10.2% y/y to approximately 1.137 million units, which accounted for 66% of all passenger vehicles sold in the month.
Commercial vehicle production in April was approximately 356,000 units, a 14.5% decrease m/m and a 5.9% increase y/y. Commercial vehicle sales were approximately 362,000 units, down 19% m/m and up 5.3% y/y.
As for new energy vehicles, production in April reached 37,306 units, a 19% increase y/y, and sales totaled 34,361 units, a 7.9% gain y/y. By vehicle type, electric vehicle (EV) production reached 30,197 units, up 26.1% y/y, and EV sales totaled 28,570 units, up 19.4% y/y. Production of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHVs) totaled 7,108 units for a y/y decrease of 3.9%, and PHV sales totaled 5,791 units for a y/y decline of 26.8%.
Vehicle exports in April reached approximately 68,000 units, a m/m decrease of 3.6% and a significant y/y increase of 26.3%. YTD exports totaled approximately 245,000 units (up 29% y/y), with passenger vehicles reaching 173,000 units (up 43.3% y/y) and commercial vehicles reaching 72,000 units (up 4.1% y/y).

China sales increase 4% y/y to 2.54 million units in March
On April 11, 2017, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for March 2017. Production and sales showed double-digit increases on a month-over-month (m/m) basis. They maintained growth on a year-over-year (y/y) basis, but at a lower rate than that of February. Year-to-date (YTD) production and sales for January-March showed strong growth thanks especially to significant increases in the commercial vehicle market.
Overall vehicle production in March totaled 2.604 million units, up 3% y/y, while sales reached 2.543 million units, up 4% y/y. YTD production through March totaled 7.133 million units, up 8% y/y, while YTD sales totaled 7.002 million units, up 7% y/y.
Passenger car production in March was 2.188 million units, an 18.4% rise m/m and a 1.8% increase y/y. Passenger car sales were 2.096 million units, a 28.4% rise m/m and a 1.7% gain y/y. Sales of small vehicles with 1.6-liter or smaller engines declined 0.1% y/y to 1.451 million units, which accounted for 69.2% of all passenger vehicles sold.
In the commercial vehicle market, production totaled approximately 416,000 units, up 33.3% m/m and up 10.2% y/y. Sales reached 447,000 units, up 45.7% m/m and up 16.2% y/y.
As for new energy vehicles, production reached 33,015 units, a 30.9% increase y/y, and sales totaled 31,120 units, a 35.6% gain y/y. By vehicle type, electric vehicle (EV) production reached 26,685 units, up 41.8% y/y, and EV sales totaled 25,342 units up 43.3% y/y. Plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHV) production totaled 6,330 units for a y/y decrease of 1.1%, and PHV sales totaled 5,778 units for a y/y rise of 9.6%.
Vehicle exports in March reached approximately 70,000 units, a 40.2% increase m/m and a 23.8% rise y/y. YTD exports totaled 179,000 units (up 31.1% y/y), which included 128,000 passenger vehicles (up 46.6% y/y) and 51,000 commercial vehicles (up 3.6% y/y).

China sales increase 22.4% y/y to 1.94 million vehicles in February
On March 10, 2017, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for February 2017.
Vehicle production in China totaled 2.16 million, a 33.8% increase on a year-over-year (y/y) basis, while sales reached 1.939 million, a 22.4% rise y/y. Year-to-date (YTD) production that includes January result was 4.529 million, up 11.1% y/y, while YTD sales reached 4.459 million, up 8.8% y/y.
Passenger car production was 1.847 million units, which marked a month-over-month (m/m) decrease of 10.8% and a y/y increase of 31.5%. Sales were 1.633 million, down 26.4% from January and up 18.3% y/y. Sales of small vehicles with 1.6 L or smaller engines increased 17.5% y/y to 1.157 million units, which accounted for 70.9% of all passenger vehicles sold.
In the commercial vehicle market, production totaled approximately 312,000 units, up 5.0% m/m and up 49% y/y. Sales reached approximately 307,000 vehicles, up 1.7% m/m and up 49.9% y/y. These increases were attributable to the booming truck market.
Production of new energy vehicles totaled 17,972 units, a 15.5% increase y/y, and sales of these vehicles totaled 17,596 units, a 30.3% rise y/y. By vehicle type, electric vehicle (EV) production was 15,327 units for a y/y rise of 32.3%, and EV sales totaled 13,919 units for y/y growth of 49.5%. Plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHV) production was 2,645 units for a y/y decrease of 33.5%, and PHV sales totaled 3,677 units for a y/y decline of 12.4%.
Vehicle exports in February totaled approximately 50,000 units, a 14.1% decrease from January. Monthly exports maintained y/y growth for a gain of 42.8%. YTD exports reached 108,000 units, up 36.3% y/y. By vehicle type, approximately 78,000 passenger vehicles were exported, which was an increase of 55.2% y/y, and approximately 30,000 commercial vehicles were exported, a rise of 3.4% y/y.

China sales increase 0.2% y/y to 2.52 million vehicles in January
On February 13, 2017, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) announced vehicle production and sales results for January 2017. Production and sales significantly declined on a month-over-month (m/m) basis, while production slightly fell and sales edged up on a year-over-year (y/y) basis. Production and sales were affected by fewer working days due to the earlier start of the Lunar New Year holidays, as well as a lower tax reduction for small vehicles. While a 10% tax is levied on a new vehicle purchase, the tax rate for small vehicles with 1.6L or smaller engines were reduced to 5% until the end of 2016. Thereafter, in January 2017, the small car tax rate was increased to 7.5%.
Overall vehicle production totaled 2.369 million units, down 3.9% y/y, while sales reached 2.52 million units, up 0.2% y/y. Passenger car production was 2.072 million units, a 4.2% decrease y/y, while passenger car sales totaled 2.218 million units, a 1.1% decrease y/y. Sales of small vehicles with 1.6-liter or smaller engines increased 1.3% y/y to 1.588 million units, which accounted for 71.6% of all passenger vehicles sold. In the commercial vehicle market, production totaled approximately 297,000 units, down 1.6% y/y, while sales reached approximately 301,000 units, up 11.3% y/y.
Production of new energy vehicles totaled 6,889 units, down 69.1% y/y, and sales of these vehicles totaled 5,682 units, down 74.4% y/y. By vehicle type, electric vehicle (EV) production was 5,857 units for a y/y decrease of 63.8%, and EV sales totaled 4,978 units for y/y decline of 67.8%. Plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHV) production totaled 1,032 units for a y/y decrease of 83.2%, and PHV sales totaled 704 units for an 89.5% fall y/y.
Vehicle exports in January totaled approximately 58,000 units, a 26% decrease m/m. Exports maintained y/y growth for a gain of 31%. By vehicle type, 43,000 passenger vehicles were exported, which was a decrease of 26% m/m and an increase of 53.5% y/y. Exports of commercial vehicles totaled approximately 16,000 units, a 26% decrease m/m and a 6.6% decline y/y.
