List of suppliers

Adient (former Johnson Controls) Lear Faurecia Magna International

Refer to the (Japanese) report

I. Introduction

This article focuses on the finished seat assembly (Assy) as well as its main components such as the seat frame, adjuster, recliner, and seat upholstery.

This report addresses models currently manufactured in Europe and the Americas (including some models that had been manufactured). Section IV provides a list of suppliers for Seat Assy and seat components by supplier, OEM, and model to give the reader a better understanding of the supply chain. Parts suppliers are included in some cases where the assembler is unknown.

II. Global expansion of major seat suppliers

1) Global status of business, facilities, and development

  • Of the ten largest suppliers, five are based in the E.U and U.S. and five are based in Asia.
  • This article covers four of the E.U. and U.S. suppliers: Faurecia of France, and Adent (formerly Johnson Controls), Lear, and Magna Seating of the U.S. The fifth supplier, Brose, has not been included because the company is not involved in seat assembly.
  • Among the five Asian suppliers, four are Japanese, and covered by the Japan Report. (Toyota Boshoku has business in Europe and the Americas and is the second largest seat supplier in the world; however, they are not included in this report because, as a member of the Toyota Group, most of their product is supplied to Toyota Motor Corporation.)
  • Suppliers are establishing their global manufacturing footprint for Seat Assy and seat-related components, which are a high-volume automotive product line. With the global expansion of the OEMs, suppliers who can satisfy the just-in-time (JIT) delivery requirements are in high demand.
  • U.S.-based Adient (formerly Johnson Controls), Lear, and Magna continue to expand their global presence and improve their production systems.
  • In the past Fauricia of France was primarily focused on the European market, but in the 2012 to 2013 period it aggressively expanded its capital investments globally, establishing a number of production and R&D facilities in the Americas and Asia.
  • As part of the global expansion, suppliers are building relationships with local suppliers, establishing partnerships and joint ventures, to supply product for the Asian markets, especially in Japan, China and Southeast Asia. (Below are examples from Japanese market)
    • Adient: Partnerships with Toyota Boshoku and Tachi-S
    • Lear: Joint ventures with Tachi-S and NHK Spring
    • Faurecia: Joint venture with NHK Spring
    • Magna: Joint venture with Namba Press Works
  • Major seat suppliers were actively making acquisitions of seat and seat component businesses until the beginning of 2012, but since 2013 that activity has slowed down. However, between 2015 and 2016 the seating division of Adient (formerly Johnson Controls) of the U.S., once the largest seating supplier in the world, underwent a major transformation.
    • It transferred its interior parts division, excluding seats (highly competitive, low profit margins) to its joint venture company in China
    • It spun off its seat division to form a new company, Adient, for the purpose of increasing its cash reserves.
    • Since the divestiture of Adient, Johnson Controls has increased its focus on its power solutions and building systems divisions.

Adient plc (formerly Johnson Controls)

Business overview

  • Adient plc was formed on October 31, 2016 by the spin-off of the seating and interior parts division of Johnson Controls and its listing on the New York Stock Exchange.
  • Adient is ranked as the 12th largest supplier in the world (FY 2016) after being spun off from Johnson Controls where it was ranked as the world's seventh largest supplier (FY 2015). Currently Adient is the world's largest supplier of seats with a 25-30% market share for Seat Assy, and seat business revenues of USD 16.616 billion as of September 2016.
  • As the largest supplier of automotive seats, in 2015 it had the top share in the major markets of the Americas 36%, Europe 38%, and China 44%.
  • When spun off in October 2016, the company employed around 75,000 people and owned 230 production and assembly facilities in 33 countries around the world. In China, its 17 local joint ventures operate a total of 60 seat manufacturing plants in 32 cities.
  • Although a U.S. company, Adient is a global company and the key customers of its seating business are the major OEMs of Europe, the U.S., and Japan.
  • To maintain its top position in the global seating market, Adient's business strategy has been to expand its scale by investing in more than USD 1 billion in acquisitions since 2011. The new business entity Adient was established by its spin-off from Johnson Controls, who did so to increase its cash reserves.
    • Sold its HomeLink business to Gentex in September 2013.
    • Sold its business lines such as body electronics and infotainment to Visteon in July 2014.
    • In July 2015, it transferred management responsibility for its interior parts business, excluding seating, to the subsidiary Yongfeng Automotive Trim Systems of its joint venture partner Yanfeng Automotive Interiors Co., Ltd. located in Shanghai, China.
    • In October 2016, the new company "Adient", responsible for the former JCI seating business, was established and listed on the New York Stock Exchange.
  • In September 2017, Adient announced that it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Futuris (Futuris Automotive Group Ltd.), which designs and manufactures seats and interior systems. The acquisition was valued at approximately USD 360 million, including the assumption of approximately USD 18 million of net debt. The Futuris Group has 15 production sites in North America and Asia, manufacturing products such as seating systems, seat frames, headrests, armrests, and seat bolsters. Customers include Tesla, Ford, GM, Geely, Chery, Brilliance and a number of Tier-1 seat suppliers. As a result, the company aims to further expand their top share of the automotive seating market.
  • In September 2017, Adient announced that it had agreed to form a cooperative relationship with Autoliv to develop seating to integrate future car designs and autonomous driving technology. The collaboration will focus on the development of a new far-side seating system that conforms to Euro NCAP standards by integrating the existing Autoliv seat-mounted airbag system into the seating arrangements of the future car. The seating system is scheduled to launch in the second half of 2018.

Production facilities

  • During the 2-year period 2012 to 2013, including its JVs, Adient invested in ten sites that were new plants, expanded plants, or new subsidiaries. The only new site established for its seating business was a polyurethane foam molding plant in Mexico in February 2014.
  • Adient has constructed only one new facility since its spin off in 2016: a plant for manufacturing seat covers in the Strumica R&D zone in Macedonia in June 2017. This facility has a ground area of 12,500 square meters, and supplies product primarily for the E.U. market. Adient initially invested USD 20 million to construct the facility, which is expected to employ 1,300 workers. Further investments into the facility are expected in the near future.
  • China: In September 2013, Adient announced plans to increase the number of production sites of its automotive components division, including seating products, from 57 to 68 sites in the next few years. But, the company will likely reconsider its plans in light of the decision made to transfer management responsibility for interior parts to the joint venture and spin off of Adient to handle the seating business.

R&D facilities

  • There were no significant investments in R&D sites in Europe or the Americas during the 2014 to 2015 period, but one R&D site was established in China, and after Adient became independent in October 2016 a number of new offices opened in the U.S. and China that included R&D personnel.
  • China: One new office was opened in Shanghai in January 2017. Located in the center of Shanghai's business district, the office has a staff of approximately 280 persons responsible for headquarter functions such as finance, legal affairs, IT, HR, procurement, quality control, program management, business development, management, and R & D.
  • U.S.: Adient established a West Coast office in San Jose, California in November 2016. The new office will be an R&D site focusing on connected cars and autonomous driving technology for existing and new customers. Approximately 25 employees are engaged in business development, product development and industrial design divisions. Adient plans to increase investment in the site for products and technologies to satisfy future requirements for autonomous driving, vehicle electrification, seat weight reduction, and individualized consumer demand.

New product development

  • In June 2017, the company announced that it had developed removable seat covers to add a level of cleanliness to the car-sharing and ride-sharing markets. With an integrated zipper, Adient's seat covers area easy to remove and clean. Covers are washable and removing the seat cover will not damage the foam in the structure. The foam is protected by a lining underneath the removable covers, eliminating the need to be restored or replaced.
  • In July 2017, the company announced the development of seats for autonomous vehicles, which it exhibited at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. In addition to providing functionality to improve the comfort of the vehicle's interior, such as swiveled seats that recline far back, it plans to introduce seating designs to reduce the weight of autonomous vehicles.

Faurecia S.A.

Business overview

  • Faurecia is ranked as the world's 9th largest automotive components supplier (FY 2016) with a 10-15% share of the seat assembly market and sales of EUR 6.607 billion. The operational scale in seating places this French company just behind that of Lear (as of fiscal year ending December 2016).
  • In descending order of revenue, its businesses include exhaust control, seats, interior parts, and exterior parts.
  • Inclusive of parts, the seat business contributes to 35% of its total sales revenue (as of fiscal year ending December 2016). Although total company sales are higher than that of Lear, the size of its seating business is considerably smaller (Lear's seat business contributes to 77% of sales).
  • At the component level it is the top supplier of front seat frames and mechanisms, far ahead of its competitors Johnson Controls (JCI), Lear, and Toyota Boshoku.
  • As the company is based in France, it holds a strong position vis-à-vis the European OEMs (PSA, Renault, VW/Audi). However, the company has also started to gain a foothold in the Chinese, Indian, and other Asian markets through the establishment of local production and R&D facilities. Business opportunities with Renault's alliance partner Nissan are particularly promising.
  • New product development: The company continues to aggressively focus on the development of lightweight and smart seats.
    • The company developed lightweight back panels for front seats using its Cover Carving Technology system.

  • Japan: Established an R&D facility in Kanagawa Prefecture in 2016 to develop product for Nissan Motor Company.

Magna Seating, a division of Magna International Inc.

Business overview

  • Magna International, a global mega supplier of automotive parts from small accessories to power units and full assemblies, is headquartered in Canada. Its seating business is called Magna Seating and located in Novi, Michigan. The company supplies seat assembly, mechanisms, structures, and seat foam to the U.S. Big-3 OEMs on both a Tier-1 and Tier-2 basis.
  • Magna International is a typical example of a large supplier that has undertaken a number of M&A and alliance activities to increase its size, with one recent example being the acquisition of German transmission maker Getrag. Over the past five years Magna Seating has made a few significant acquisitions including Resil Minai of Brazil, Pabsa S.A. of Argentina, and Vogelsitze GmbH of Germany. Also, the company sold its interior parts businesses, excluding seats, to Grupo Antolin of Spain in 2015.
  • Magna International is the third largest automotive components supplier in the world (FY 2016) and the largest supplier with a seating division. However, the size of Magna Seating is relatively small compared to the overall size of Magna International. The annual sales revenue of Magna Seating is USD 5.079 billion, placing it at around fifth or sixth in the industry. Although the company supplies all of the Detroit Big-3 automakers in the U.S., it has been unable to penetrate the European market and has been slow to enter the China market (supplying only Chrysler, Ford, and Volvo). This may be the reason it is not a major player in the seating industry.
  • In March 2017 the company announced that in cooperation with Ford it had developed a carbon fiber sub-frame prototype that is 34% lighter than conventional pressed steel frames. As a result, the total number of parts was reduced by 87% compared to the previous version, with 45 steel parts being reduced to six (four metal and two molded parts). Ford is currently testing the new product.

Production facilities

  • Including parts and joint venture plants, Magna Seating owns 48 production facilities worldwide (19 in North America, 6 in South America, 15 in Europe, 8 in Asia). Although a global company, it has been slow to move into the Asian markets. However, between the third quarter of 2015 and first quarter of 2016, it opened four new facilities (two each in China and India), adding to the three existing plants that primarily supply Chrysler in China. The new facilities will supply product for the Volvo brand under the Geely Group and to Changan Ford. The next challenge for the company will be to strategize on how to acquire China business with the Chinese affiliates of its longstanding U.S. seating customer GM.
    • China: In April 2017, the company announced the establishment of a joint venture with Avic Hubei Aviation Precision Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. (HAPM), a subsidiary of AVIC Electromechanical Systems Co., Ltd. (AVICEM). The acquisition was scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2017. HAPM is a supplier of automobile seat mechanisms and structural parts founded in 1995, headquartered in Xiangyang City, where it is involved in the design, development, and manufacture of seat products. The company is expanding its business overseas as well as within China.
  • Magna Seating's competitive advantage stem largely from its streamlined interior and exterior parts production system as well as its advanced research and development capabilities regarding materials and processing technologies inherited from its parent Magna International.
  • The company opened a fourth seat plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina to provide seats for the BMW group. The plant came on stream in June 2017 and is expected to employ 480 staff by 2020.

R&D facilities

  • Magna has five R&D facilities, one in each of the U.S., Brazil, Germany, China, and India.

Brose Fahrzeugteile GmbH & Co. KG

  • Brose mainly handles interior parts, electrical components, and electronic parts, and is ranked around tenth in the global seating industry.
  • Brose does not produce full seat assembly, but only adjusters, recliners, and sub-assembly for seat systems. As a result, Brose supplies seat components to other large seat suppliers such as Johnson Controls, Lear, and Faurecia as well as directly to OEMs.
  • Between 2014 and early-2016 Brose established only two production facilities (one in the U.S. and one in South Africa). Since November 2016 Brose announced the establishment of two production facilities that will launch in 2018 as follows.
    • In November 2016, a ceremony was held to celebrate the commencement of the construction of a new production facility in Taicang, Jiangsu province. The new plant has a land area of 60,000 square meters, will employ 500 persons, with plans to officially start production in 2018. Sales are expected to exceed CNY 2.2 billion by 2022. In addition to seat related parts such as seat systems, seat rails, seat motors, the new plant is expected to manufacture the complete lineup of Brose products including door systems, window regulators, and latch modules. The Taicang plant will supply product to Ford, Geely, Jaguar Land Rover, VW, Volvo, and others.
    • In June 2017, Brose announced that it will start hiring for what will be its fourth plant in Mexico. The new plant will be built in Queretaro, Mexico where two factories are already in operation. The investment amount is USD 190 million and the plant is scheduled to start operations in August 2018. The plant will manufacture seat adjustment systems for front and rear seats using metal press, welding, painting, and electronic parts assembly processes. The new plant will be the largest plant in Mexico for Broes Fahrzeugteile and is expected to create 900 new jobs.
  • Brose established one new R&D facility in 2015: the Wurzburg EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) test center. This center tests the sound levels generated by power seats and smart seats, among other non-seat related products.

Adient

  • Adient is the top supplier in the global seating industry, supplying product to major OEMs in all regions.
  • Leveraging its strength with OEMs in the U.S., Adient also has deep relationships and considerable market share with European OEMs such as Fiat and Opel/Vauxhall.
  • The company does not have a disproportionate share of seat business at any OEM, but rather has a stable business with almost all of them. This is perhaps one of the main contributors to Adient's top ranking in the seating industry.
  • One point of differentiation from other suppliers is Adient's Recaro brand for the luxury sports-car seat business. Recaro products are supplied to sports car automakers such as Aston Martin, Lamborghini, Lotus, and Porsche, as well as the high-end sports car models of Audi, Ford, Mercedes-Benz, and Renault.

Lear

  • Similar to Adient, Lear is another U.S.-based global seat supplier that has accelerated its expansion European market, but differs from Adient in that it is weak with the Japanese OEM such as Toyota and Nissan.
  • This report indicates that Lear does not have a major share of any OEM's business, but rather has business spread relatively equal among all of them. Leveraging its U.S. business ties, this report shows a considerable number of GM models equipped with Lear product.

Faurecia

  • Fauricia is slightly behind Adient and Lear in terms of global market share, but still supplies major OEMs in every region.
  • European business contributes to 70-80% of its sales, and the equipment installation data shows that the company is particularly strong at the German and French OEMs. In terms of regional sales for Faurecia, Europe accounts for about 60% and the Americas about 25%.
  • Given Faurecia's investments in production and R&D facilities in Asia over the past several years, it is likely that their proportion of business in the region, primarily with European OEM including their joint ventures, will increase going forwards.

Magna Seating

  • Mainly supplies seat assembly for the U.S. Big-3.
  • In Europe most of its business is with the sub-brands of the major OEMs.
  • Also supplies seat parts, primarily for the U.S. Big-3.

Brose

  • Does not supply full seat assembly, but serves as a Tier 2 supplier of adjusters, recliners, and sub-assembly for Tier 1 suppliers and OEMs.
  • Some of their products appear in the equipment by model list, but most of their products are installed in the full seat systems supplied by other seat manufacturers.

Industria de Asiento Superior (INSA) / Tachi-S

  • Affiliated with TACHI-S and Nissan, this company mainly supplies seats for Nissan in North America. It supplies some seat assembly for small passenger cars and commercial vans such as the Sentra, Tiida, and NV200.
  • The company also supplies product to Japanese OEMs such as Honda and Mitsubishi.

Setex Inc. / Setex Automotive Mexico

  • Setex Inc. is a seat assembly supplier established in St. Marys, Ohio, USA in 1987, and a joint venture between TACHI-S and Adient.
  • Setex Automotive Mexico was established in 2012 and began operations in February 2014.
  • Setex supplies product primarily for Honda's North American and for Nissan vehicles assembled in North America.

Sitech

  • Sitech is a wholly-owned VW subsidiary. With seat assembly plants in Germany and China, its products are installed on some of VW's European models and on the models of VW's Chinese joint ventures.
  • Sitech does not have any plants in South America where VW is strong, and the only parts it supplies are metal components exported from its plant in Poland to VW's assembly plants in Argentina. As a result, VW South America seat assembly business is being captured by Magna and others suppliers.

Grammer / GRA-MAG

  • The company specializes in the supply of seats for commercial vehicles, industrial equipment, and railway vehicles, and seats for Daimler's commercial vehicles in Europe. In the U.S., through its GRA-MAG joint venture with Magna it supplies seats for the Packer Group's Kenworth and Peterbilt brands.
