I. Introduction

transmission, or gearbox, converts the power provided by an engine or motor into any required combination of speed, torque and direction for a drive mechanism. A transmission, along with an engine or motor, has a significant impact on the driving performance, the fuel economy and the driving feel of the vehicle. Many carmakers produce the core units in-house, allowing a handful of major suppliers to provide transmissions for carmakers. The report is intended to distinguish between transmissions produced by carmakers internally and those manufactured by major suppliers. The report also aims to provide insights on the relationship between vehicle, engine and transmission types.
The report discusses continuously variable transmissions, or CVTs, which are a type of automatic transmissions, or ATs:

  • Friction-type CVTs, including those with manual mode, which use belts or chains to transmit power.
  • Hybrid transmissions, or e-CVTs, which consist of power split mechanism, electric motors and other devices.

The report does not cover the following types of ATs.

  • Multi-speed ATs, including those with manual mode, which use torque converters and planetary gears.
  • The hybrid transmissions that integrate an electric motor and clutches into a multi-speed AT. The transmissions are mounted on Nissan's rear-wheel drive (RWD) hybrid vehicles. ZF also produces the same kind of hybrid transmissions, which are available mainly in Europe.
  • Dual-clutch transmissions (DCTs) and automated manual transmissions (AMTs), which are similar to the traditional manual transmissions.

Unless otherwise specified, the term automatic transmissions, or ATs, used in the report refers to ATs, CVTs, e-CVTs or hybrid transmissions.



II. Summary

An increasing number of vehicles are reportedly using ATs, including CVTs. Still, manual transmissions, or MTs, account for nearly half of the global transmission market. The situation is not expected to change significantly over the next five years. The AT market, however, can be characterized as follows:

  • In Japan, ATs account for 80 to 90% of the transmission market.
    • Since MarkLines issued the previous CVT report in December 2011, some models have offered no more MTs and others have come with CVTs instead of multi-speed ATs as they underwent facelifts or full redesigns.
    • CVTs account for a large proportion of the AT market. The high popularity of CVTs in Japan can be attributed to more fuel efficiency the units offer and stop-and-go city traffic in the country.
    • Japanese carmakers assemble CVTs internally. Two Japanese AT suppliers, JATCO and Aisin AW, also produce CVTs.
    • Japanese carmakers except Mazda use friction-type CVTs on many front-wheel drive (FWD) and FWD-based all-wheel drive (AWD) models, including mini vehicles, with engines 2.5-liter or under. JATCO supplies its CVTs for all Nissan's CVT vehicles. The world's largest CVT supplier offers a wider lineup of CVTs for up to 3.5-liter-class engines. Nissan uses JATCO's CVTs on its FF/AWD vehicles with 3.5-liter V6 engines.
    • Japanese carmakers are increasingly adopting hybrid transmissions, or e-CVTs, in the Japanese market. Toyota is the top user of e-CVTs as it remains the market leader of hybrid vehicles in and outside Japan. Many of Toyota hybrids feature Toyota's in-house produced e-CVTs (THS-II: Toyota Hybrid System) or Aisin AW's e-CVTs.
  • In the U.S., ATs also make up approximately 90% of the transmission market.
    • Multi-speed ATs are far more prevalent than CVTs.
    • U.S. carmakers use CVTs only on some of the compact cars. Many of them are e-CVTs for hybrid vehicles. However, Japanese carmakers, Ford and other OEMs are increasingly adopting CVTs on U.S. models.
  • In Europe, ATs currently represent only 10% of the transmission market.
    • ATs are increasingly used on European D-segment and E-segment vehicles, including those with longitudinally mounted transmissions. However, some CVT vehicles switch to multi-speed ATs when they undergo a redesign. CVTs are expected to remain a minority in the foreseeable future.
    • So far, 7-speed ATs have played a major role in the automation of transmissions. 8-speed and 9-speed ATs and DCTs are currently replacing the role of 7-speed ATs. Volkswagen takes the lead in the DCT market.


III. Major CVT suppliers and OEM customers (Japanese, U.S. and European markets)

Two Japanese CVT suppliers, JATCO and Aisin AW, dominate the global CVT market. ZF produces hybrid transmissions, but the German supplier does not manufacture CVTs.
Among Japanese carmakers, Honda, Fuji Heavy Industries, known as the Subaru brand, and Daihatsu assemble all of the CVTs in-house. Mitsubishi Motors, Nissan and Suzuki, on the other hand, do not produce CVTs internally. JATCO supplies its CVTs to Nissan, partly because the major CVT specialist was based on the AT and CVT division of the former Nissan's Yoshiwara plant that Nissan spun off in 1999. JATCO also produces its CVTs for Mitsubishi, partly because Mitsubishi transferred all of the AT and CVT productions at its Kyoto, Mizushima and Yagi plants to JATCO in 2002.
Ford, Daimler and Audi also assemble CVTs in-house, but other OEMs procure CVTs from Aisin AW and JATCO.


JATCO

JATCO is an AT specialist that produces ATs, CVTs and hybrid transmissions. The major Japanese supplier holds the top share in the global CVT market. In 2012, JATCO had the second largest share at 11% behind Aisin AW in the global AT/CVT market, excluding those produced by OEMs. It aims for the top share of 15% in the global AT/CVT market by 2020.

  • As mentioned above, Nissan is a major customer for JATCO. JATCO suppliers its products to Suzuki and Mitsubishi Motors. JATCO also provides CVTs for Renault, Nissan's partner, and ATs for some of Dongfeng Nissan, Renault Samsung and AutoVAZ models.
  • JATCO currently offers a full lineup of six types of CVTs, which can be used in a wide range of vehicles from minicars to large passenger vehicles with 3.5-liter-class engines. In 2009, it introduced the world's first belt-type CVT with an auxiliary gearbox, known as JF015E, supplying to Nissan, Mitsubishi Motors, Suzuki, Chrysler and Renault and other OEMs.
  • In 2012, JATCO started producing a new CVT (JF018E) with a built-in motor and clutch for FWD hybrid vehicles. The new CVTs are mounted on Nissan's North American models, Pathfinder and Infiniti QX 60.
  • In Japan, JATCO manufactures CVTs at the four plants of all its six plants. Outside Japan, it makes CVTs at its three plants: JATCO Mexico, S.A. de C.V., JATCO (Guangzhou) Automatic Transmission Ltd. in China and JATCO (Thailand) Co., Ltd.

Aisin AW

Aisin AW, the world's largest AT specialist, is an AT unit of Toyota-affiliated Aisin Seiki. In 2012, the major Japanese supplier had the largest share at 12% in the global AT/CVT market, followed by JATCO at 11%. JATCO is rapidly catching up with Aisin AW.
Its businesses consist of ATs and car navigation systems. Approximately 90% of its overall sales come from ATs.

  • The major Japanese supplier manufactures fewer CVTs than multi-speed ATs. While JATCO mainly produces friction-type CVTs, Aisin AW focuses more on ATs and e-CVTs. Unlike JATCO, Aisin AW does not offer CVTs for 3.5-litter-class engines. Aisin AW, however, aims to beef up its CVT business for emerging markets.
  • Aisin AW assembles CVTs at its Tahara plant and Okazaki East plant, and e-CVTs (THS-II) at its Okazaki plant and Okazaki East plant in Japan.
  • Aisin AW provides CVTs and e-CVTs for Toyota and Mazda. But the Demio is the only Mazda model for which it supplies CVTs and is slated for a full redesign in September 2014. The supplier also provides e-CVTs for Axela Hybrid, Mazda's only hybrid vehicle.
  • Aisin AW manufactures CVTs for small and midsize engines. For small engines, Aisin AW produces the XB-20LN, the same type of CVT as the K310 made by Toyota Motor Hokkaido. Aisin AW supplies the XB-20LN for 1.5-liter-class vehicles, while Toyota Motor Hokkaido is in charge of the K310 for 1.8-liter-class vehicles.
  • Aisin AW manufactures two types of e-CVTs for FWD hybrids and two types of e-CVTs for RWD hybrids. It used to provide e-CVTs for Ford, but Ford switched to in-house production of the units
    Currently, it supplies e-CVTs only for some of the Toyota's FWD hybrids, all of the Toyota's RWD hybrids and Mazda Axela Hybrid.
  • CVT belts are supplied by Aisin AW's subsidiary, CVTEC Co., Ltd., a joint-venture between Aisin AW and Toyota Motor. Aisin AW owns a 66.6% stake in the joint venture, while Toyota holds all the remaining shares.

In-house production at Toyota

In August 2000, Toyota adopted its first CVT on the Opa with a 2.0-liter engine. Since then, the major Japanese carmaker has produced its own CVTs for FWD vehicles with midsize or large engines. On the other hand, Toyota procures CVTs for 1.0-liter to 1.5-liter compact vehicles from Aisin AW.

  • The carmaker manufactures CVTs for 1.5-liter to 1.8-liter engines at Toyota Motor Hokkaido, Inc. and for 2.0-liter to 2.4-liter engines at its Kinuura plant in Japan.
  • In China, Toyota Motor (Changshu) Auto Parts Co., Ltd. produces its own CVTs for 1.6-liter to 1.8-liter vehicles, exclusively designed for the local market.

In-house production at Honda

In September 1995, Honda launched its first Multi Matic CVT for Civic and Civic Ferio. Since then, Honda has produced all of its CVTs in-house. The Japanese carmaker manufactures its own CVTs at its Hamamatsu plant and Suzuka plant in Japan, as well as at P.T. Honda Precision Parts Manufacturing in Indonesia. In 2013, Honda began making its first e-CVT for Accord Hybrid, the carmaker's first full-hybrid vehicle. Honda has also produced some of the CVT belts in-house since October 2001.


In-house production at Fuji Heavy Industries

Fuji Heavy Industries, known as the Subaru brand, manufactures its proprietary Lineartronic CVTs in-house. The Japanese carmaker has been dropping out multi-speed ATs in favor of the CVTs on its Subaru vehicles. In 1987, it developed the world's first belt-type CVT for mass-production vehicles, offering the unit on the Justy. The Japanese carmaker currently produces its own CVTs at its Gunma Oizumi Plant. It also developed a new longitudinally mounted chain-type CVT for AWD vehicles with its unique horizontally opposed engines. FHI installed the new units on Legacy and Exiga in 2009. The carmaker currently produces all the CVTs for its Subaru vehicles in-house.


In-house production at Daihatsu

Daihatsu produces most of the CVTs for its mini vehicles in-house. In June 2006, the Japan's major minicar maker developed a new CVT for mini vehicles, which employs the world's first input-speed reduction type three-shaft gear train system. The Sonica became the first model to feature the new CVT. It produces its own CVTs at its Ryuo Plant in Shiga Prefecture in Japan. In October 2009, Daihatsu's subsidiary, Akashi Kikai Industry Co., Ltd., started assembling CVTs at its Kyushu plant for supply to Daihatsu Motor Kyushu. In February 2010, Daihatsu developed new CVTs for 1.0-liter compact cars, based on CVTs for mini vehicles. The carmaker produces the new CVTs for the Boon with 1.0-liter engines internally, while using AW's CVTs for the 1.3-liter Boon.


In-house production at GM

GM Powertrain (GMPT) develops and manufactures engines and transmissions, including CVTs, for GM vehicles. GMPT used to produce friction-type CVTs in Europe, but GMPT currently makes only e-CVTs, known as 4ET50, which are mounted on Chevrolet Volt, Opel Ampera and Cadillac ELR plug-in hybrids. The e-CVTs are assembled at the Flint plant in the U.S., as well as at the Aspern plant in Austria, which builds Opel vehicles.

  • In 2002, GM started production of its proprietary VTi CVT at Szentgotthard Plant of Opel Hungary Powertrain Ltd.
  • Since then, GM increased VTi CVT vehicles, producing a total of 82,000 units of the vehicles by the end of 2003.
  • In January 2004, however, GM stopped producing the VTi CVT after offering it for the 2005 Saturn Vue.

Since then, GM did not build friction-type CVT vehicles for nearly a decade, but the U.S carmaker resumed production of friction-type CVT vehicles with the 2014 Chevrolet Spark. GM calls the CVT unit M4M, but it procures the unit from JATCO, which calls it JF015E instead.


In-house production at Ford

Ford does not produce its own friction-type CVTs at present. The U.S. carmaker manufactures only e-CVTs for the Fusion and other hybrid vehicles.

  • In 1999, Ford and ZF jointly set up ZF Batavia LLC in Ohio, the U.S. The joint venture was initially 49% owned by Ford and 51% by ZF.
  • In 2003, the carmaker started assembling its own belt-driven CVTs, known as CFT23, for Focus C-Max, which was sold by Ford Europe.
  • In 2004, Ford purchased the entirety of its partner's 51% stake in the above joint venture, making it a wholly owned subsidiary. ZF Batavia was renamed Batavia Transmission LLC.
  • In the 2005 model year, Ford introduced its first U.S. chain-driven CVT vehicles. The CVT, known as CFT30, was installed on Ford Five Hundred, Mercury Montego and Ford Freestyle.
  • The carmaker discontinued CVT vehicles after offering them for the 2007 model year.
  • It rolled out the 2009 Ford Escape and Ford Fusion hybrid vehicles, using Aisin AW's hybrid transmissions.

In 2012, Ford started producing new e-CVTs, known as HF-35, for the revamped 2013 Fusion Hybrid and the all-new C-Max Hybrid.


In-house production at Audi

Audi developed the multitronic CVT jointly with a major clutch supplier LuK in the Schaffler group. The multitronic CVT employs a link-plate chain drive for 3.0-liter-class engines. Using LuK's chains, pulleys and hydraulic pumps, the carmaker assembles the multitronic CVTs at Volkswagen's Kassel Plant. Hydraulic vane pump are supplied by ixetic of Germany.
Audi offered more CVTs for its FWD models with engines 3.0-liter or under, but the European carmaker is currently replacing the CVTs with multi-speed ATs or S-tronic DCTs. Audi still uses CVTs for the B8 series A4, A5 coupe and the C7 series A6. The B8 series A4 and A5 coupe are slated for a full makeover around 2015. Audi also offers a multi-speed AT version for most of its CVT vehicles. Audi seems to be adopting fewer CVTs for its vehicles. In fact, since the carmaker launched the B8 series A4 (D-segment) in 2008, it introduced the all-new A1 (B-segment) in 2010 and the revamped A3 (C-segment) in 2012 without setting a CVT version for either of them.

  • In 1999, Audi introduced its first CVT for the A6. The current A6 comes with CVTs even after a full redesign in 2011.
  • In 2000, Audi A4 started using CVTs. It still features CVTs even after a complete makeover in 2008.
  • In 2003, Audi A8 started using CVTs. The current A8 comes with no more CVTs.
  • In 2007, Audi A5 started using CVTs. The current A5 still features CVTs.
  • In 2010, Audi A7 started using CVTs. The current A7 comes with no more CVTs.

In-house production at Daimler

Until 2012, Daimler produced its Autotronic CVT, which was used in the A-Class and B-Class. The European carmaker has gradually dropped out CVTs in favor of multi-speed DCTs on its vehicles. The carmaker assembles its own CVTs at Hedelfingen Plant in the suburbs of Stuttgart, Germany. Two-stage variable hydraulic pumps are supplied by ixetic of Germany.

  • In the autumn of 2004, Daimler introduced its first CVT for the A-Class (W169). When the W169 underwent a full redesign in 2012, the CVTs of the vehicles were replaced with DCTs for the revamped W176.
  • In the summer of 2005, Daimler installed CVTs for the B-Class (W245). When the W245 was fully redesigned in 2011, the CVTs of the vehicles were replaced with DCTs for the revamped W246 except for a limited version of B180 for the Japanese market. The CVTs of the B180 vehicles were also replaced with DCTs later.
