Aisin AW / Aisin Seiki JATCO ZF


I. Introduction

The gearbox or transmission is a system that generates power from a vehicle's powertrain. Transmissions can provide a wide range of rotation speeds, torques, and rotation angles. The transmission is a very important component that affects the product appeal of a model, impacting driving performance, fuel efficiency, and driving comfort. Accordingly, many automakers produce transmissions in-house, together with engines and drive motors, in order to produce the component according to their needs. Therefore, only a limited number of large suppliers supply transmission units. This report will differentiate between transmissions which are produced in-house by automakers and those produced by suppliers as much as possible. It will also cover the engines or models associated with specific transmissions.
This report covers torque converters, which is a fluid coupling for automatic transmissions, as well as multi-speed automatic transmissions (ATs) which use torque converters and planetary gears. ATs with manual modes will also be covered. This report will not cover continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) including STEP CVTs; hybrid vehicles' transmissions in which an in-vehicle motor changes speed continuously via a motor-split mechanism; or dual-clutch transmissions (DCTs) which have similar mechanisms with manual transmissions. This report uses the abbreviation “AT” for automatic transmissions, unless otherwise specified.



II. Summary

In recent years, ATs have been increasing in number. However, manual transmissions (MTs) have almost a 50% share in the global transmission market, a ratio which is unlikely to change over the next five years. The MT share (including automated manual transmissions) is very high in the European market. The MT share for European C-segment or smaller vehicles is between 70% and 80%, which is very high compared with the global market. Compact models with transverse transmissions are the main drivers in the European C-segment. In the European D- and E- segment, the AT share is increasing as vehicles have longitudinal transmissions. Meanwhile, in the US, the MT share is as low as 10%. In Japan, the MT share is also very low hovering between 10% and 20%. The transmission markets in Japan and the US are focused on ATs and are very different from the European market. Both Japanese and American automakers sell many vehicle models without available MTs.
Recently, the transmission market has started to shift from ATs to CVTs and DCTs. In addition, the market is pursuing multi-speed configurations with more gears. 6-speed ATs are used for low price vehicles, while 9-speed AT units are available from ZF. Automakers and suppliers are formulating their strategies for each market based on the fuel efficiency and costs when ATs are mated with engines. In European market, the shift from 7-speed ATs to 8- or 9-speed ATs is being accelerated. In the US, ATs are being shifted to CVTs mainly for small models.
In Japan, CVTs are increasingly prevalent on minicars, small and medium passenger cars, and front-wheel drive (FWD) models when redesigned with a new engine. This trend has continued since the previous survey in December 2011. Simple AT models are on a decline in Japan.



III. Major AT suppliers and automakers' trends

The Japanese suppliers, Aisin AW and JATCO, are large automatic transmission suppliers for passenger cars and small commercial vehicles. The American supplier, Allison, is a major automatic transmission supplier for large commercial vehicles. The German supplier, Zahnradfabrik (ZF), is another leading supplier for passenger cars, as well as small and large commercial vehicles.
Out of all the Japanese automakers, Honda produces all of its automatic transmissions in-house. On the other hand, Mitsubishi Motors and Nissan do not produce automatic transmissions in-house. This is partly because JATCO was established based on the AT division of the former Nissan's Yoshiwara plant to produce transmissions for Nissan. Mitsubishi Motors transferred all AT and CVT production from its Kyoto, Mizushima, and Yagi plants to JATCO in 2002.
With regards to American and European automakers, three American automakers produce automatic transmissions in-house. In Europe, German automaker Daimler and French automakers Renault and Peugeot produce automatic transmissions for some of their models in-house. Other automakers receive transmissions from ZF and Aisin AW.


Aisin AW / Aisin Seiki

Aisin AW is a subsidiary of Toyota-affiliated Aisin Seiki. Aisin AW is the world's largest AT supplier. Its business consists of ATs and car navigation systems. Approximately 90% of the company's sales came from ATs for the last three fiscal years ended in March 2011 through March 2013. This suggests that the company focuses on AT business.
Aisin AW's foreign operations consist of one plant in the US, and two plants in China. Furthermore, the company's third AT plant in China will start operations at the end of 2014 and will produce 6-speed ATs for FWD models. Aisin AW produces 20 ATs in total, including 4-, 5-, 6-, and 8-speed ATs for both FWD and rear-wheel drive (RWD) models. The parent company, Aisin Seiki, produces ATs for FWD light trucks and buses, as well as medium trucks and buses, at its Ogawa plant in Anjo, Aichi. Aisin Seiki has also produced those ATs at Aisin Drivetrain, Inc. in the US state of Indiana since December 2012.
Although Aisin AW is the largest AT supplier in the world, it has a very high sales ratio of hybrid transmissions to its main customer, Toyota. Hybrid models account for about 45% of Toyota's small and passenger car sales volume in Japan, and 27% of Toyota's small and passenger car sales volume in Japan, US, and five major countries in Europe. Furthermore, CVTs are becoming more common for small vehicles in Japan where the company's major customers, Japanese automakers, are competing. Therefore, in recent years, Aisin AW is trying to expand its AT sales to European automakers and emerging markets.


JATCO

JATCO is an exclusive automatic transmission supplier that produces ATs, CVTs, and hybrid transmissions. It has the largest CVT share in the global market. JATCO was established based on the former Nissan AT division. Therefore, the company supplies transmissions mainly for Nissan. JATCO's other customers include Suzuki and Mitsubishi Motors. Mitsubishi Motors transferred all its in-house production of ATs and CVTs to JATCO in 2002.
JATCO supplies CVTs for Renault, Nissan's partner, and ATs for specific Dongfeng Nissan, Renault Samsung, and AutoVAZ models. However, the company currently does not supply products to Mazda, which was a joint partner at the time of its establishment, except for models which are supplied from Nissan and Suzuki to Mazda based on their agreements.
JATCO produces 4- and 6-speed ATs for FWD models, 4-,5-,7-speed ATs for RWD models, 7-speed hybrid transmissions, and 6 different CVTs. Among these transmissions, the JR712E is a very unique hybrid transmission for RWD models. Other suppliers tend to produce CVT hybrid transmissions with electric motor couplings. However, the JR712E was developed based on the 7-speed FR7AT, and FR7AT's torque converter was replaced with an electric motor and clutches. The JR712E has a one-electric-motor two-clutch system in which one clutch switches an engine and a motor, and the other clutch shifts gear positions. This system provides the JR712E hybrid transmission with the same degree of mounting efficiency as a conventional AT.


ZF

The Car Powertrain Technology division of ZF Friedrichshafen AG is headquartered in Germany. The leading driveline and chassis system supplier has plants in Germany and China. ZF produces ATs for commercial vehicles as well as passenger cars. The ATs for commercial vehicles are handled by ZF's Commercial Vehicle Technology division. The company also produces ATs for special-purpose vehicles and rail vehicles. ZF has almost a 50% share in the global AT market for large buses, and supplies the products to European and other automakers worldwide. ZF also produces MTs and DCTs for passenger cars. The Powertrain Technology division's sales, including transmissions, accounted for about 60% of the ZF's total sales in the fiscal year ended in December 2013.
Although ZF is headquartered in Europe where MTs are on the majority of vehicles, the company has also spent considerable effort in developing ATs with multi-speed configurations and more gears such as 6-speed and 8-speed ATs. In recent years, ZF commercialized the 9-speed AT (9HP series) for FWD vehicles, to further improve ATs' performance and fuel efficiency of vehicles. As a result, ZF now has a full lineup of 6-speed, 8-speed, and 9-speed ATs. The 9-speed AT was mounted on the Range Rover Evoque for the first time. The 9-speed AT will also be installed on the 2015 Chrysler 200, Jeep Cherokee, and Jeep Cherokee Renegade. ZF's current key product for passenger cars is 8-speed ATs (8HP series). ZF is expanding sales of its 8-speed ATs mainly for high-end models from automakers such as BMW, Audi, and Chlysler. Among those automakers, Chrysler is shifting AT production in-house, under its license agreement with ZF. (For details, please refer to <In-house production at Chrysler>.) Having these kinds of license agreements with automakers is one of ZF's strategies to globalize its operations.


In-house production at Toyota

Toyota, headquartered in Japan, manufactures 4-, 5-, and 6-speed ATs for front-engine, front-wheel-drive vehicles at its own facilities: Kinuura Plant; Toyota Motor Hokkaido Inc. (both in Japan); and Toyota Motor Manufacturing, West Virginia, Inc. in the U.S.A. It procures the following transmissions from Aisin AW: 4-, 5-,and 6-speed ATs for front-engine, front-wheel-drive vehicles; and 4-, 5-, 6-, and 8-speed ATs for front-engine, rear-wheel-drive vehicles.


In-house production at Honda

All the 4- and 5-speed ATs used in Honda vehicles are made at the following Honda facilities: Honda Hamamatsu Plant; Honda Transmission Mfg. of America, Inc. (U.S.A.); Honda Precision Parts of Georgia, LLC. (U.S.A.); P.T. Honda Precision Parts Manufacturing (Indonesia); and Dongfeng Honda Auto Parts Co., Ltd. (China). The 6-speed AT was developed in 2010 and first installed in the Acura MDX.


In-house production at Mazda

Automakers are shifting from ATs to CVTs for small vehicles in Japan and other markets. However, Mazda has developed the 6-speed Skyactiv-Drive AT that is mated with new engines by using Mazda's unique Skyactiv Technology. Mazda currently produces the 6-speed Skyactiv-Drive AT for gasoline and diesel engines, and mounted it on the CX-5, Atenza, and Axela. 4-speed and 5-speed ATs are also produced in-house. Mazda procures 6-speed ATs from Aisin AW, but is gradually replacing the ATs with Skyactiv-Drive ATs as the automaker fully redesigns its models.


In-house production at Fuji Heavy Industries

At its Gunma Plant in Japan, the company manufactures 4-speed and 5-speed ATs, using major transmission parts procured from JATCO.


In-house production at Daihatsu

The company manufactures all its ATs, 3- and 4-speed, at its own facility in Shiga, Japan.


In-house production at Suzuki

The company manufactures in-house FWD 3-speed ATs, using major transmission components provided by JATCO. These ATs are manufactured at the Kosai Plant in Japan. Suzuki procures JATCO's FWD 4-speed ATs and Aisin AW's RWD 3- and 4-speed ATs for use in mini vehicles; as well as Aisin AW's 4-speed ATs for vehicles equipped with engines having displacements of 1-liter or more.


In-house production at GM

GM manufactures FWD 6-speed ATs; as well as RWD 4- and 6-speed ATs at its own facilities in the U.S.A., Canada, Mexico, and France. It procures Aisin AW's FWD 6-speed ATs for use in the Buick Regal 2.0L; as well as Allison Transmission's RWD 6-speed ATs for use in the GMC Sierra 6.6L diesel.


In-house production at Ford

Ford manufactures FWD 4- and 6-speed ATs; as well as RWD 4-, 5-, and 6-speed ATs at its own facilities in the U.S.A. and France. It uses Aisin AW's FWD 6-speed ATs in the Ford Fusion 3.5L and Lincoln MKZ 3.5L. In addition, Ford Europe procures Aisin AW's FWD 6-speed ATs for the Galaxy, Mondeo, and S-MAX, all 2.2L diesel.


In-house production at Chrysler

Chrysler produces 4- and 6-speed ATs for FWD vehicles as well as 4-, 5-, 6-, and 8-speed ATs for RWD models in-house in the US. The 8-speed ATs for RWD vehicles are used for vehicles featuring V6 and V8 engines. The 8-speed ATs are produced under the license agreement with ZF in Germany. Initially, the 8-speed ATs were supplied from ZF and mounted on the 2012Dodge Charger with a V6 engine and the Chrysler 300. In September 2012, Chrysler started casting and assembly of ATs in-house at the Kokomo plant in Indiana, US. The ATs produced at the plant were mounted on the 2013 Chrysler 300. Since then, Chrysler has been switching from purchasing ATs from ZF to producing them in-house. The ATs produced by Chrysler were used on nineteen 2014 models including the Dodge Durango, Ram 1500, and Jeep Cherokee. Chrysler announced that its accumulated production of ATs reached 1 million units as of June 2014. As for the 2015 models, Chlysler ATs will be paired with V8 engines (known as HEMI engine series) of the Dodge Charger, Dodge Challenger, and Dodge Challenger SRT.


In-house production at Daimler

Daimler manufactures all its ATs, 5- and 7-speed, in-house in Germany. In 2003, it launched the world's first 7-speed automatic.


In-house production at PSA

PSA makes FWD 4-speed ATs at its own plant in France, while procuring FWD 6-speed ATs from Aisin AW.


In-house production at Renault

Renault produces FWD 4-speed ATs at Societe de Transmissions Automatiques S.A. (STA) in France, in which it has an 80 percent share. STA is a joint-venture company with PSA Peugeot Citroen, which owns the remaining 20 percent equity. Renault also uses FWD 6-speed ATs made by JATCO.
