Chinese Electric Truck OEMs Expand Their Presence in Europe
IAA Transportation 2026: From battery innovations to integrated platforms
Introduction
The IAA Transportation 2026, organized by the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), was held at the Deutsche Messe exhibition grounds in Hanover, Germany, from September 15 to 20, 2026, with a dedicated press day on September 14.
The event concluded with 1,589 exhibitors from 46 countries and more than 150 world debuts and innovations, further strengthening its position as a leading international platform for commercial vehicles, logistics, and transport solutions. According to the VDA, more than 140,000 visitors attended the exhibition, including over 113,000 trade visitors.

While European manufacturers primarily focused on extending operational capability through improvements in energy efficiency, energy storage, vehicle packaging, and application-specific vehicle configurations, Chinese OEMs used IAA Transportation 2026 to demonstrate their growing presence in the European heavy-duty truck market.
The exhibits highlighted several distinct approaches to market entry and expansion. BYD emphasized battery technology and ultra-high-power charging, while Foton leveraged its established commercial-vehicle manufacturing experience to expand into battery-electric heavy-duty transport. DeepWay showcased a dedicated electric-truck platform with a strong focus on digitalization and integrated electronic-control architectures, while SuperPanther combined proprietary electrification technologies with a localized European manufacturing strategy.
Together, the exhibits demonstrated that Chinese participation in Europe's commercial-vehicle sector is becoming increasingly diverse. Rather than pursuing a single development path, manufacturers highlighted a combination of battery innovation, integrated electronic architectures, flexible platform strategies, proprietary electrification technologies, and dedicated battery-electric truck platforms.
This report examines the battery-electric truck exhibits presented by BYD, Foton, DeepWay, and SuperPanther at IAA Transportation 2026 and analyzes the differing approaches these manufacturers are taking to expand their presence in Europe.
