GlobalData Global Light Vehicle Sales Update (August 2026)
India and Brazil maintain stable double-digit growth, while China shows little signs of improvement
2026/09/24
Summary
- The global Light Vehicle (LV) selling rate improved once again in August, climbing to over 91 mn units/year. The latest selling rate result is more in line with the 2025 full-year figure, though the strength of the market through H2 2025 suggests 2026 will remain in last year’s shadow. YTD sales stand at 57 mn units, down 4% compared to the first eight months of 2025.
- Similar trends seen earlier in the year continued into August. Notably, the two largest global markets, China and the US, remain in negative territory YoY. A pivot away from policy support in China has left the domestic market exposed. The US market is facing cost of living pressures while support for EVs has been removed, but still strong wealth metrics are offsetting some weakness. Elsewhere, consumers are benefiting from increasingly competitive markets despite economic headwinds.
