GlobalData Global Light Vehicle Sales Update (January 2026)
Global sales down by 2.0%, 6.63 mn units and the selling rate was 81 mn units/year
2026/02/24
Summary
- For January, the Global Light Vehicle (LV) selling rate fell sharply to 81 mn units/year due to a steep contraction in the Chinese PV market. In year-on-year (YoY) terms, the market declined 2.0% as sales totaled 6.6 mn units globally.
- For the first time in an extended period, the US, Western Europe, and China all experienced a decline in the same month. The drivers varied by region: in the US, severe weather weighed on sales; in China, the reduction in NEV purchase-tax discounts and changes to the trade-in subsidy program sharply reduced volumes; and in Western Europe, a December pull-forward, was followed by a muted start to 2026.
