On October 29, BYD Japan Group held a press briefing at the Japan Mobility Show 2025 (Press days: October 29-30, Public days: October 31-November 9) at Tokyo Big Sight. Mr. Xueliang LIU, General Manager of BYD's Asia Pacific Automotive Sales Division and President of BYD Japan Co., Ltd. (BYD Japan), Mr. Atsuki Tofukuji, President of BYD Auto Japan Co., Ltd. (BYD Auto Japan), a wholly owned subsidiary of BYD Japan that oversees the passenger car business in Japan, and Mr. Sumito Ishii, Executive Vice President of BYD Japan who oversees the commercial vehicle business in Japan, took to the stage.
Mr. LIU appeared in the high-performance U9 EV supercar from the high-end Yangwang brand and introduced BYD's most recent achievements. BYD rolled off its 14 millionth New Energy Vehicle (NEVs) from the production line at its factory in Brazil in October. From January to September 2025, the company achieved the world’s highest electric vehicle (BEVs) sales, totaling approximately 1.606 million units. Its business operations in Japan have reached their 20th anniversary milestone.
Next, Mr. Ishii representing the commercial vehicle business took the stage, explaining that 10 years have passed since the introduction of electric buses in Japan, and that cumulative sales will reach approximately 500 units by the end of the year, with an electric bus market share of approximately 70%. The company currently has three models in its lineup, and the newest addition to the lineup, the T35, a light-duty electric truck designed exclusively for the Japanese market, made its world debut. Two models will be available: an aluminum van and a flatbed. The vehicle can travel 250km on a single charge, while maintaining a payload capacity of about 1 ton. It can be driven with a regular driver's license. In addition to being equipped with many safety and comfort features such as an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS), seat ventilation, seat heaters, and a large monitor, the vehicle also supports V2H (Vehicle-to-Home) and V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) as external power supply functions, and OTA updates. The product is scheduled to be released around spring 2026. The company is considering a price of about JPY 8 million, including bodywork cost.
Mr. Tofukuji, who is in charge of the passenger car business, explained that the cumulative sales volume since the start of sales in Japan in 2023 has reached 7,123 units, and unveiled two new models. One is the Sealion 6 DM-i (Chinese name: Song Plus), a plug-in hybrid (PHEVs) mid-size SUV, having its debut in Japan. BYD's unique DM-i (Dual Motor Intelligence) system is described as "a specification that, in keeping with BYD's expertise in batteries, allows the vehicle to actively drive as an BEV, but also use the engine when necessary." It is said to provide a quiet, smooth, and comfortable ride. Pre-orders for the Sealion 6 DM-i will begin on November 1, with detailed information to be announced on December 1.
BYD unveiled the RACCO, its first EV prototype designed exclusively for markets outside of China and compliant with Japan's unique mini-vehicle standards. It is named after the endangered sea otter [rakko in Japanese], based on the company's corporate mission of lowering the earth's temperature by 1 degree. It adopted the super-tall wagon style and sliding doors that are mainstream features of Japanese minicars. At present, the company is conducting tests such as crash tests, charging tests, and other comprehensive evaluations. The drive battery utilizes lithium iron phosphate “blade batteries.” Details on battery capacity were not disclosed, but the company plans to offer two types of batteries: short range and long range. The product is scheduled to be launched in the summer of 2026.
BYD will exhibit a total of 13 vehicles, including eight passenger cars (including one world premiere and three Japan premieres) and five commercial vehicles (including one world premiere and one Japan premiere).
