On May 8, it was announced that Mexico withdrew the tariffs on aluminum and its alloys that had been stipulated on April 22, 2024, that corresponded to 35% and 20%, respectively.

This change was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF), where it is mentioned that the reason for the change is due to the fact that “there is currently no national production of primary raw aluminum (unalloyed and alloyed), and the availability of said merchandise in countries with which Mexico has concluded an international treaty on trade matters is insufficient to satisfy the supply of the automotive, auto parts, and electronics industries, among others.”

Sections 7601.10.02 and 7601.20.02of the decree of April 22 are deleted to prevent the industries' supply chain from being affected.

The changes presented in the decree come into force as of May 9, 2024, one day after its publication in the DOF.

On May 6, it was announced that Gerdau, the Brazilian steel company is considering the possibility of setting up a plant in Mexico, mainly to supply the automotive sector.

The potential plant includes the construction of a steel mill capable of producing 600,000 tons of special steels annually. If the project is approved, construction will begin during 2025 with an approximate investment of USD 500 to 600 million, although a location has not yet been specified.

This analysis by the company is partly driven by nearshoring and favorable forecasts for the local automotive industry, as well as the concentration of important companies in the sector, many of which are customers of Gerdau.
