On October 22, the Rio Tinto Group announced it has started pilot production of lithium in Boron, California.
Under a USD 10 million first phase plan, Rio expects to produce about 10 metric tons a year of lithium carbonate by chemically processing material from a pile of decades-old mining waste at the site.
