On February 19, Honda announced it will restructure its global manufacturing network. This restructure comes as Honda accelerates its commitment to electrified cars, in response to the unprecedented changes in the global automotive industry. The significant challenges of electrification will see Honda revise its global manufacturing operations, and focus activity in regions where it expects to have high production volumes.
As a result, Honda decided to close its Swindon plant in the UK in 2021, where Honda currently produces 150,000 Civic hatchback variants per year. Honda further decide to cease manufacturing Civic sedan model in 2021 at its Turkish plant.
Honda completed explanation of the Swindon plant closure to approximately 3,500 employees. Consultation activity with affected employees will begin today.

On November 8, BMW announced that for the first time, the electric motors and high-voltage batteries developed for the BMW i3 will be used to power a city bus made by the well-known Turkish manufacturer Karsan which is designed specifically for use in inner-city traffic.
The BMW Group and Karsan have signed an agreement involving the supply of motors and batteries for the purely electrically powered bus “Jest electric”, which is produced in Bursa in Turkey for both the domestic market and for international markets.
The electric motors and high-voltage batteries are produced at the BMW plant in Dingolfing. The electric synchronous motor of the BMW i3 that will be used to power the Karsan Jest electric in future generates a peak output of 125 kW/170 hp and a maximum torque of 250 Nm.
The high-voltage battery provides a capacity of up to 44 kWh. With a combination of two high-voltage batteries, pre-series prototypes of the Karsan Jest electric achieve a capacity of 88 kilowatt-hours and therefore a range of 210 kilometres.
