On April 30, Nissan partnered with Ecobat Solutions, a battery recycling company, to recycle used electric vehicle (EV) batteries for a second life usage in the UK. The project supports Nissan’s aim to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 across its operations.
In the partnership, both companies will investigate ways of commercializing the process of locating, safely transporting, dismantling, repairing, and repurposing EV batteries from Nissan Leaf EVs for second-life usage.
The used batteries, once located, will be transported to Ecobat's Darlaston base near Birmingham, where further checks will be carried out based on Nissan's expertise and processes to assess the long-term safety and performance of the batteries. It will allow Nissan to identify suitable second-life applications, including Battery Energy Storage Systems, and Mobile power charging systems. The batteries that don’t make the grade will be safely prepared for recycling.
