BWI Group and thyssenkrupp Steering (thyssenkrupp) inked a contract for the development and manufacture of a pioneering Electro-Mechanical Brake (EMB) technology.

The BWI Group will provide expertise in brakes and suspension systems through its global R&D Centers located in Italy, Poland, U.S., and China, along with its Shanghai Software Center. Its automated production facilities worldwide will also expedite the mass production of EMB systems.

thyssenkrupp will share knowledge on new electrical/electronic (E/E) architectures and software, as well as its competence in EMB systems derived from steering technology through its technical centers in Hungary and Liechtenstein.

The cooperation is initially limited to seven years. It includes the licensing of the EMB technology (EMB) developed by thyssenkrupp Steering.

Furthermore, they are now developing the third generation of EMB that helps simplify vehicle assembly while providing braking redundancy for Level 3 and above autonomous driving capabilities. Featuring a dual-motor design, efficient packaging, and novel redundancy, the newly developed EMB caliper ensures safety and reliability. Its reaction speed for the time to wheel lock is nearly twice as fast as modern one box wet brake systems. Moreover, it enables complete braking energy recovery and meets the electric and intelligent needs of braking systems for smart vehicles.

The production and global sales for the new EMB system are planned to start in 2026. (From 1/2 press releases dated April 9, 2024)
