Summary

 Reported below is a summary of major equipment on new passenger cars launched by Japanese OEMs in the Japanese domestic market from 2010 to the beginning of 2011. The new passenger cars counted 18 models composed of newly introduced models and fully redesigned models, including four (Toyota brand) and one (Lexus brand) models from Toyota, two models from Honda, five from Nissan, three from Suzuki, one model each from Mazda, Mitsubishi and Daihatsu (excluding the models produced on an OEM basis).

 Among driving stability equipment, the ESC (Electronic Stability Control), which prevents skidding, has been increasingly installed in compact cars and mini cars. In Japan, the installation of ESC will become compulsory for registered vehicles and for mini cars starting in October 2012 and in October 2014, respectively. Regarding collision safety, front-seat side airbags and curtain airbags have been widely installed.

 Among driving support functions, standard installation of hill start assist, which assists the start of a vehicle on a slope, has increased. Regarding enhanced visibility features, the installation of auto lighting system, which automatically turns on and turns off headlamps according to brightness outside of a vehicle, has increased.

 Regarding seats, there has been an increasing trend to install driver-seat heaters. For comfort and convenience, the installation of the eco-mode function, which controls the engine and CVT as well as air conditioner with emphasis on fuel consumption, and an idling stop system has increased.

Toyota installs S-VSC on Ractis and idling stop system on Vitz

 Toyota installed the VSC (Vehicle Stability Control)(Toyota's name for ESC), which prevents skidding, on the FJ Cruiser as standard, and some grades of the Vitz compact car as standard, and on the Passo as optional. On the Ractis compact car, the S-VSC, which coordinately controls VSC and electric power steering, is available as optional.

 Regarding collision safety, front-seat dual-stage airbags and curtain airbags are installed on the FJ Cruiser as standard. Regarding enhanced visibility features, automatic headlight system, which automatically turns on and off the light according to the brightness outside of the vehicle, is installed on certain grades of the Vitz and the Ractis as standard.

 For comfort, a nanoe drive shower, which generates mildly acidic fine particle ions that are said to be good for the hair and skin, is available on the Ractis and the Passo as optional. For convenience, the idling stop system is installed on certain grades of the Vitz as standard.

(Note) 1. Toyota launched the 1st-generation Vitz in 1999 and has sold more than 3.5 million in more than 70 countries worldwide. This 3rd-generation model comes with the idling stop system, boasting fuel consumption of 26.5km/L in 10-15 mode. The monthly sales target is 10,000.
2. The Ractis is a compact 2-box car that was fully redesigned for the first time in 5 years. It maintains the size of the 5-number model, but has a 40mm wider interior space to secure a spacious interior and luggage space that can be used for various purposes.
3. The FJ Cruiser is an SUV that has been marketed mainly in North America since 2006 and is introduced in Japan this time. As a playful full-scale 4WD, it features unique styling, high driving performance, and real-oriented equipment.
4. The Passo is a compact 2-box car that features an easy-to-use compact body, spacious interior space, and the top-level fuel consumption in its class. As is the 1st model, it is jointly developed with Daihatsu (Daihatsu's name: Boon). The price ranges from 1 million JPY. The monthly sales target is 6,500.
5. The X-REAS (Relative Absorber System) is a cross-linked shock absorber system that connects with an intermediate unit diagonally shock absorbers of the left front wheel and the right rear wheel, and the right front wheel and the left rear wheel. Responding to the differential in the mutual actuation, the intermediate unit adds appropriate dampening force to minimize the horizontal oscillation and the vertical oscillation to achieve excellent maneuverability and driving stability both on and off road.
6. The active traction control supports escape when it detects slipping on a snowy road, in mud, and on a rocky road by braking the spinning wheel to distribute the driving force to the other wheels.
7. The link-type single front wiper uses only a single wiper to attain more efficiency. Since the washer comes out along the blade, it eases the wiping function.
8. The shopping assist seat (front-passenger seat) prevents luggage put on the seat from falling from the seat by elevating the plate at the front part of the seat. In addition, it can be used as a hook on which to hang a shopping bag or an umbrella.
9. The rear seat with the 6:4 tilt down function (with remote foldable lever) can be folded into the seat easily through the operation of a lever at the side of the luggage space. The Ractis uses this function for the first time as a compact-class model (Toyota's data as of October 2010).
10. In the long cushion mode, the seating face of the rear seat can be extended to the feet cabin by pulling out the seating face of the rear seat when no passenger is there, making a wide and flat space. The luggage on the rear seat does not fall to the floor and the rear seat can be used as luggage storage.
11. The nanoe drive shower generates nanoe (fine particle mildly acidic ions produced from moisture) to give occupants the feeling of being in an esthetic clinic through maintaining the moisture levels in the skin and adding manageability to hair.
12. The front door glass (super UV cut) filters out about 99% of the UV rays. It has been adopted for the first time in the world (Toyota's data as of December 2010). This door glass is said to be as effective as gloves and sunscreen.
13. The adjustable double-deck board can be attached to the luggage storage room and is adjustable in height in two stages. When the board is set on the upper position, small objects can be placed below; folding down the rear seats can create a flat cargo space. When the board is set on the lower stand, tall luggage can be accommodated.

Toyota adopts advanced features for driving stability and driving support on Lexus CT200h

 Toyota installed the S-VSC, which coordinately controls VSC (vehicle stability control) and electric power steering, on the CT200h as standard, which was launched in January 2011 under the Lexus brand, and a performance damper, which absorbs minute vibrations while driving, on certain grades as standard, thus enhancing driving stability.

 Among driving support functions, advanced features such as a pre-crash safety system and radar cruise control are available as optional. In addition, as a countermeasure against the quietness of HEVs, Toyota equipped an approaching vehicle audible system, which warns the pedestrians against oncoming vehicles, on the CT200h as standard for the first time for a Lexus brand model.

(Note) 1. The CT200h is a 5-door hatchback and is the first HEV-only model in the premium compact class. It adopts a hybrid system that combines a 1.8L engine, a motor, a reduction mechanism, and a nickel-hydrogen battery. The fuel consumption is 34.0km (10-15 mode). The monthly sales target is 1,500.
2. The performance damper is a damper that absorbs minute vibrations while driving, which cannot be controlled by steel plates. The performance damper that connects left and right sides of the body is installed in the front and rear under body of the CT200h. The damper absorbs minute deflection and vibration to achieve swift handling and a quality ride.
3. The pre-crash safety system warns the driver with an alarm buzzer when the vehicle is highly likely to collide with the vehicle driving ahead and when the brake pedal is pressed, the brake assist is activated to enhance braking force. When the collision is judged to be unavoidable, the pre-crash brake and the pre-crash seat belt are activated to mitigate damage. The pre-crash seat belt is also activated when an emergency brake or the control of the vehicle is judged impossible. The pre-crash safety system is available as optional on all grades.
4. The approaching vehicle audible system generates a pseudo-motor sound through a speaker built in the bumper from start-up to driving at a speed of up to 25km/h moving backward to warn pedestrians of the approaching vehicle. The sound can be switched off. This is the first time the Lexus model has installed this system as standard.
5. The drive mode select switch allows the driver to select three modes - NORMAL, ECO, and SPORT. Acceleration and steering feels different in each mode, and meter display and interior lighting colors change to signify driving mode and to create a particular mood.
6. The Lexus CT premium sound system adopts bamboo charcoal-based resin diaphragm speakers to deliver less distorted sound. Bamboo grows fast and is said to be an excellent material in terms of environmental protection.

 



Honda installs eco-assist and shift-up/down indicator on CR-Z

 Honda installed the front-seat i-side airbag, which controls the deployment of the side airbag according to the posture of a passenger on the front-passenger seat on certain grades of the Freed Spike as standard. In addition, convenient equipment has been installed, such as reversible floor boards, which lower the floor of the cargo space by one level, and rear-side utility, which makes available functional equipment on the walls of the cargo space.

 On the CR-Z HEV, the driver-seat i-SRS airbag system, which controls the deployment optimally in relation to the seating position of the driver and the type of collision, is equipped as standard; on certain grades of the models, an eco-assist and a shift-up/down indicator are also installed as standard to assist fuel-efficient driving.

2. CR-Z is a hybrid-only 2+2 coupe. It combines a 1.5L i-VTEC engine and Honda's unique hybrid system, and integrates an advanced design, swift ride, and excellent fuel performance (25.0km/L in 10-15 mode for CVT model).
3. The driver-seat i-SRS airbag system (continuously variable volume type) controls inner pressure and deployment by giving spiral pattern sewing to the airbag and keeps the deployment longer through the setting of an air release valve. The airbag is deployed more swiftly and with lower impact and keeps protection performance longer, thus widely responding to the seating position of the driver and the type of collision.
4. The rear-view support mirror displays a wider area with a curved mirror that is attached on the cover of the high-mount lamp to reduce the rear blind area. In order to assist the operation when moving backward, the yellow auxiliary lines that indicate the width of the vehicle and the positional relationship of the vehicle and the object, are shown.
5. The rear-seat dive-down function folds the rear seat with one action to create a long, flat floor. Despite an entirely thin seat design, the seat is comfortable since it adopts an S-shaped spring for the seat cushion.
6. Eco assist is a function that helps the driver's overall fuel economy. It has a "coaching function," in which the color of the ring that surrounds the speedometer informs the driver of the level of eco drive, and the expansion and contraction of the bar indicates the level of eco drive in acceleration and deceleration; another one of its function is the "teaching function," in which the level of eco drive is graded after driving.
7. The shift-up/down indicator is part of the eco assist system and indicates the timing of the shifting for fuel-efficient driving. When no shift operation is performed for a certain period of time, the ambient meter becomes blue to encourage the driver to shift gear (in NORMAL/ECON mode).
8. The reverse floor board is a floor board that can be converted to a one-level lower floor of the cargo space when it is elevated to be reversed with a grip. It is divided into the left and right parts and can be used depending on the size and volume of the luggage. The floor board is made of plastic and aluminum materials and is light, but very strong.
9. The rear-side utility refers to functional, convenient equipment on the walls of the cargo space including built-in table, cargo spot light with an angle adjustment function, rear-side pocket, side-lining tray, and tie-down hook.
10. The glove box with a temperature adjusting function linked with air conditioner circulates air from the air conditioner to the upper part of the glove box to keep drinks cool/hot.

 



Nissan installs advanced driving support functions on Elgrand and Serena

 Nissan installed features that enhance driving stability, including a tire-pressure monitoring system (with tire pressure filling-completion guide function) and a 4-wheel independent suspension on the Elgrand as standard. In addition, advanced driving support functions such as around the view monitor are available on the Serena and the Elgrand as optional.

 Various features for EVs including charging equipment, information and telecommunications system exclusive for EVs, and battery controller, are installed on the Leaf EV (launched in December 2010) as standard.

(Note) 1. The Leaf is an EV-only 5-seat 3-number vehicle. It combines an independently developed large-capacity Li-ion battery and a high-output motor. The cruising range on full charge is 200km in JC08 mode.
2. The Serena is a minivan that boasts of a wide interior space and ease of use. This 4th-generation model has achieved low fuel consumption of 15.4km/L (10-15 mode) by using an idling stop system. The monthly sales target is 5,400.
3. The Elgrand is Nissan's 3rd-generation highest-end minivan. It uses a new platform with low center of gravity. It has a stately exterior, an interior that brings an uplifting feeling to the driver and that welcomes passengers, and various features that pursue relaxation and comfort. The monthly sales target is 1,900.
4. The March is a compact car, of which the 1st-model was launched in 1982. Since then, 5.65 million were sold in Japan and abroad. This 4th-generation model adopts an idling stop system, achieving fuel consumption of 26.0km/L. The monthly sales target is 4,000.
5. The Juke is a novel car that integrates swiftness of a compact car and the strength and security of an SUV. The monthly sales target is 1,300 units.
6. The tire pressure monitoring system monitors air pressure with a sensor built in the wheel and displays a warning on the vehicle information display in the meter when the air pressure becomes low. By driving at the designated air pressure, it prevents fuel efficiency from declining. With the pressure guidance function, the system informs the driver when the air pressure comes to the designated pressure by a buzzer in case of filling air.
7. The 4-wheel independent suspension combines front strut suspension and rear multi-link suspension, which saves weight by using an aluminum link, with a newly-developed shock absorber with a rebound spring to achieve straight-line stability and a smooth ride.
8. The quick comfort seat heater speeds up heating by offering warmth beginning with the parts of the body that are more easily warmed (upper thighs and buttocks) and maintains a comfortable temperature by focusing the heat on the parts of the body that make one more comfortable (upper thighs and the lower back).
9. With the articulated seatback of the 2nd-row seat, the seatback is divided in two - upper and lower parts. The angle of the upper part is adjustable. With this, the position of the seat can be optimized.
10 The head restraint with relax mode (2nd-row seat) has a cushion on both sides of the head restraint. By reclining the cushion forward, the head restraint supports the head to achieve a more comfortable and less tiring ride.
11. The highly-functional filter (vitamin filter) sucks in air from within the interior space or from the outside to purify it and release vitamin C into it, thus helping the skin and hair to retain moisture.
12. The ECO mode corrects the operation of the accelerator and offers total control of the response of the CVT and the schedule of the shift transmission when turned on. In addition, eco-driving is supported by the smart rev control, which minimizes the unnecessary change of the number of engine rotations, and the navi-coordinated shift transmission, which optimally controls the engine and CVT based on the information from the navigation system.
13. The one-touch auto sliding door not only unlocks the door by pushing the switch once, but also opens the auto sliding door. This is the first time the system has been adopted (Nissan's data as of August 2010). When the sliding door, which is fully opened, is then closed after the lock knob is slid down, all the doors are locked at the same time the door is closed.
14. The idling stop system of the Serena, rather than using a conventional starter system (gear-driven), utilizes, instead, an ECO motor system (Energy Control motor) (belt-driven) when the engine is re-started. It only takes about 0.3 seconds to re-start the engine. It is quiet since no sound is emitted by the motor of the starter.
15. The intelligent control display can operate an air conditioner and drive mode (Normal/Sports/Eco) on one single operation panel. The operation panel features a newly-developed two-color shift function with a special filter that filters in only a certain wavelength and two LED lamps, which makes possible two different displays.

Twin-digital meter The upper meter displays an eco-indicator that shows the degree of eco drive, and the speedometer, and the lower meter displays a power meter that shows the output and regeneration of Li-ion battery, information on recharge and Miles Per Gallon Equivalent, battery level, possible cruising range, and various warnings.
Charging equipment The charging cable and charging port are waterproof. The charging connector and the charging port also have a drain outlet. In cases of water exposure and electrical leakage, there is a control box attached to the charging cable that disconnects the electric current.
Information system

While driving, the navigation display provides a driving support function, including the estimated arrival area of the EV, information on the location of charging facilities and its update, and timer recharging. Outside of the vehicle, the driver can access the usage history and the battery level from a cell phone or PC, can recharge the battery, and can even operate the air conditioner via remote control.

A new mouse-type electric shift can easily be operated with a flick of the wrist by wrapping the palm around it. By selecting eco-mode, the acceleration gets milder and the regenerative energy is increased when braking. The air conditioning also becomes milder and the cruising range can be expected to increase by about 10% in an urban area.
Approaching vehicle

The approaching vehicle sound system warns the pedestrian against an oncoming vehicle when the vehicle is running at a low speed. The computer and synthesizer that are built in the controller can create sound that is similar to the sound of a vehicle running at a certain speed or moving forward or backward, to emit the sound through speakers that are built in the motor room. By switching, the creation of sound can be suspended.
Start-up sound When the vehicle is ready to start with the power switch on, a start-up sound is emitted instead of the sound of an engine. By switching, the driver can select from three different sounds.

The controller always monitors the battery level and prevents electrical overload, electrical discharge, and overheating, which can lead to a decline or complete loss of capacity.

 



Mazda, Mitsubishi, Suzuki, and Daihatsu: Main features on the new models launched from 2010 to the beginning of 2011

 Mazda installed the idling stop system on certain grades of the Premacy as standard. In addition, the brake override function, which cuts engine power when the accelerator and brake pedal are depressed at the same time, for the first time as Mazda's model.

 Mitsubishi enhanced safety of the RVR by installing a driver-seat knee airbag as standard and side/curtain airbags as optional. In addition, convenient equipment that improves fuel consumption, including a deceleration energy regenerative system, is installed as standard.

 Suzuki has installed ESP (Electronic Stability Program/Suzuki's name for ESC) on certain grades of the Swift as standard, and on the MR wagon and the Solio as optional. The company also installed variable-gear ratio steering and a brake override system as standard, thus enhancing driving stability.

 Daihatsu installed the idling stop system on certain grades of the Move as standard. It has also installed an eco-drive mode and an eco indicator, which support fuel efficient driving, thus improving eco performance.

3. The brake override system cuts engine power when the accelerator and brake pedal are depressed at the same time. This is the first time Mazda has adopted this system. It will install the system in the entire model that it markets worldwide in the future.
4. The super wide HID headlight has enhanced long-distance visibility and short-distance width by a large amount of light and a wide distribution of light. The super wide HID headlight is about 1.4-fold brighter than the regular HID headlight (data by Mitsubishi).
5. ETACS (Electronic Time and Alarm Control System) is a control system for electronic components that can be customized for each user. Its main functions are head light auto cut (which automatically turns off the head light when the door of the driver seat is opened with ignition off), comfort flasher (when the winker lever is operated for a short time, the flasher on the side operated flashes three times), welcome light/coming home light (which turns on the position lamp or the head light when driver/passenger gets out of the vehicle, thus giving a feeling of security), an immobilizer, and a security alarm.
6. The rear center arm rest (arm rest with through lid) is an arm rest installed in the middle of the rear seats. When the lid is opened, long objects (such as skis) can be brought into the vehicle when there are as many as four passengers seated.

2. Suzuki Solio is a compact wagon that is fully redesigned for the first time in 12 years. The Solio is developed under the concept of "Compact height wagon that offers enjoyable driving, convenience, and also boasts of excellent fuel consumption." It is Suzuki's second main compact passenger car, following the Swift.
3. Suzuki Swift is a compact passenger car, 1.8 million of which have been sold worldwide since its launch in 2004.This 2nd-generation model has improved driving performance and environmental performance by using a new platform that has achieved weight saving and high rigidity, a new engine with intake/exhaust VVT, and CVT with an auxiliary gearbox.
4. The 1st-generation Daihatsu Move was launched in 1995. This 5th-generation model has achieved the lowest fuel consumption (27.0km/L in 10-15 mode) among gasoline-powered vehicles. It aims to be the next-generation standard spacious mini passenger car that boasts of the entire aspect including space, convenience, comfort, basic performance/safety features. (As for the new Boon, which was launched in February 2010, please refer to Toyota Passo, which is a co-developed model.)
5. The variable gear ratio steering allows the driver to change the direction of the tires with fewer operations when the driver changes lanes. The turning angle of the tires changes with the amount of steering, and operates with less power when shifting gears in reverse at a parking lot.
6. The nanoe diffuser releases "nanoe" --fine particle ions that are surrounded by ultrafine water--in the interior space. This is the first time the diffuser is installed in a mini car (Daihatsu's data as of December 2010). The nanoe is a mildly acidic ion that is friendly for the skin and the hair and is also effective as a deodorant, a pollen limiter, and an air sterilizer.
7. The large capacity/deep luggage under box is usually hid under the floor of the cargo space. When the deck board is opened, tall luggage such as a garden tree and a baby buggy can be housed vertically.
8. The touch panel audio allows the users to operate intuitively by touching or sliding with a tip of the finger as the part of the switch illuminates on the flat and clear black panel. An iPod or a USB memory stick can be connected through the USB socket.
9. The eco-drive mode, when turned on, makes more stringent the conditions needed for the indication of the eco-leaf gauge, which shows the level of eco-drive with the intuitive shape of a leaf, and the eco-indicator, which informs the driver of fuel-efficient driving, and also controls the air conditioner (cooling), thus improving fuel efficiency.
10. The idling stop system eco IDLE minimizes the number of exclusive parts for the idling stop system by adopting CVT without electrical oil pump to reduce weight and size. The fuel consumption in 10-15 mode is improved by 2.0km/L.
