JSAE 2022 in Nagoya: Autonomous Driving and ADAS

Efforts to streamline adaptive development

2022/08/24

Summary

The Automotive Engineering Exposition 2022 held at the Portmesse Nagoya International Exhibition Hall (June 29-July 1) welcomed many visitors in the midst of this midsummer’s scorching heat wave. In the area of AD/ADAS (Autonomous Driving/Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems), the introduction of evaluation solutions for efficient adaptation development in anticipation of the spread of adoption of AD/ADAS caught one’s attention. Various simulations for evaluating autonomous driving were on display, as well as initiatives aimed at replacing the enormous man-hours required to test actual vehicles on public roads with tests on test courses and in laboratories. The number of exhibits of high-performance sensors aimed at AD Level 3 and above has decreased, and the introduction of more solid and practical technologies has increased, which may indicate that the adoption of ADAS is steadily expanding.

Exhibits that will lead to more efficient experiments include Horiba MIRA Ltd.'s AD/ADAS comprehensive evaluation facility in the UK, Toyo Technica's live-action video playback software and road surface shape measurement system, and Meidensha Corporation's driving robot, which operates pedals and shifts in place of humans. The driving simulation for AD/ADAS evaluation introduced by SOLIZE Corporation showed great potential for the future. As an AD/ADAS sensor, CEPTON, Inc. exhibited its LiDAR sensors.

In the exhibits by automobile companies, Isuzu introduced its ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control), which is installed in trucks, and has an alert function that focuses on reducing stress in hauling operations and assisting recognition of blind spot areas, which are needs unique to trucks. As for passenger cars, the Nissan and Honda exhibits attracted much interest from visitors.
