Evolving EV Technologies; Nissan and Honda Approaches to Electrification

Automotive World 2018: From the EV & Electrification Technical Sessions

2018/03/12

Summary

This report presents Nissan and Honda's approach to electrification based on their presentations at the EV & Electrification technical sessions during the 10th Automotive World held at the Tokyo Big Sight exhibition center in January 2018. Below is the summary of the technical sessions.

Nissan: Electrification and intelligent technologies equipped on the all-new Nissan Leaf

Below is the summary of the technical session presentation from Mr. Hiroki Isobe, Chief Vehicle Engineer, Project Management Group No.4, Nissan Product Development Department No.1, Nissan Product Development Division No.1, Nissan Motor Co. Ltd.

The all-new Nissan Leaf, an attractive electric vehicle (EV), was realized through significant technological evolution.

In December 2010, the first-generation Leaf was launched, becoming the world's first mass produced EV.

  • Zero emissions (zero exhaust gas) while driving
  • Promotes dissemination of charging infrastructure
  • Use as power infrastructure (Leaf to Home)

In 2017, the all-new Leaf was launched, appearing as a more attractive electric vehicle.

  • Unprecedented refined driving
  • State-of-the-art intelligent technologies

Honda: Development of electric vehicle technologies to realize a carbon-free society

Below is the summary of the technical session presentation given by Mr. Hakaru Sadano, Chief Engineer, Manager Dept.1, Electric Vehicle Development Division, Automobile R&D Center, Honda R&D Co., Ltd.

The world Honda is aiming for, is the realization of a "carbon-free society" and to provide people the "joy and freedom of mobility" by the utilization of renewable energy. To maximize the use of renewable energy, "storage" of electric power is the key element. An increase in solar power and wind power generation is also required to contribute towards improving unstable grid power generation.

User requirements for electric vehicles:

  • Attractiveness and value-add of the car: More than 200 miles of range
  • Basic performance of the car: Short charging time, eliminate charge wait time
  • Required/expected functions: Battery state of charge monitoring by IoT and coordination with surrounding technologies

Technologies to respond to requirements for electric vehicles:

  • High density battery pack technology: High density, lightweight design, battery exhaustion technology, thermal management
  • Ultra-quick charging: 150 miles in a 15-minute single charge
  • Wireless charging: Automated charging while parked
  • Link with external energy grid
