The global market for motorcycles (Part 2): Sales rise in Pakistan, Europe; fall in Brazil

Brazil, Taiwan, Pakistan, Japan, Europe, and the U.S.

2017/06/08

Summary

Motorcycle Demand in Brazil, Taiwan & Advabced Countries  This report is the second part of an overview of major motorcycle producing countries around the world. This article summarizes the status of Brazil, Taiwan, Pakistan, as well as developed countries including Japan, Europe, and the U.S. (See the previous installment for the motorcycle markets of major countries such as India, China, and other ASEAN nations).

Brazil's production volume for motorcycles has continued to decline since exceeding the 2 million unit mark in 2011 due to a deteriorating economy. In 2016, sales decreased by 29.7% year-over-year (y/y) to 888,000 units, falling below 1 million units for the first time in 13 years. In 2016, unit sales also declined by 27.9% y/y to 858,000 units.

The production volume for motorcycles in Taiwan has seen a significant recovery since the economic crisis in 2008. In 2016 it recorded the highest sales since 2009, an increase of 8.8% to 1.22 million units due to the increase in domestic sales. In order to expand domestic sales the Taiwanese government introduced support measures for replacement sales from January 2016. Unit sales in 2016 increased by 18.0% to 788,000 units from the previous year.

In the first nine months of FY 2016 (from July 2016 - March 2017), the number of motorcycles produced in Pakistan (including 3-wheelers) increased by 21.2% y/y to 1.21 million units.

Among developed countries, which experienced significant declines in their markets for motorcycles after the global financial crisis, Europe continued to see its market shrink even after the immediate aftermath. However, the market bottomed out in 2014, and motorcycle sales in 2016 rose 9.1% to 131,000 units. Although the U.S. market had been gradually recovering, it decreased by 2.1% to 490,000 million units in 2016 for the first time in six years. Japan's domestic sales in 2016 continued to see a decline in unit sales of first-class engine-equipped motorcycles (-50cc), falling by 8.3% y/y to 373,000 units. The market shrank to the lowest level in about 50 years.

At the same time, production volume in Japan, the home country of several major motorcycles makers, increased by 7.3% to 561,000 in 2016. This resulted from production of some models being shifted to Japanese plants.

Brazil: Production volume in 2016 falls below 1 million units for the first time in 13 years but recovery expected in 2017 thanks to exports

Motorcycle Production in Brazil  Brazil s motorcycles production volume in 2016 declined by 29.7% y/y to 888,000 units. The country's sales fell below the 1 million unit mark for the first time since 2003. Sales have declined by about 40% compared to when they exceeded 2.1 million units (2008, 2011) during their peak. Wholesale sales also declined sharply in 2016 by 27.9% from the previous year to 858,000 units, falling below 1 million units.

Although Brazil hosted the Rio de Janeiro Olympics, the effect from the event was limited and the economic growth rate negative for the second consecutive year. This resulted from a decrease in investments accompanying a decline in resource prices. The country's economy is in a recessionary phase comparable to that of the Great Depression in the 1930s. A rise in the unemployment rate and decline in household consumption continued, negatively influencing sales of motorcycles.

ABRACICO announced in January, 2017 that it predicts that the market will continue to shrink in 2017 and that wholesale unit sales will decline by 3.9% to 825,000 units. At the same time, the association expects that production volume in 2017 will increase by 2.5% to 910,000 units due to an increase in export volume.

Taiwan: Domestic sales reach standard levels for the first time in eight years supported by sales promotion measures

Taiwan produced 1.22 million motorcycles in 2016, an 8.8% y/y increase. It is the first increase in two years. Domestic sales increased by 18.0% to 788,000 units, exceeding 700,000 units for the first time in eight years. The regulatory promotion measures for four-wheelers and motorcycles that the government has been implementing since January 2016 proved to be successful. This promotion measure will continue to be implemented in 2017 as well.

While about 40% of the production in Taiwan is exported, the export volume in 2016 decreased for the second consecutive year by 6.0% from the previous year to 427,000 units. Exports to Japan, Colombia and Spain, the top three export destinations, all declined.

Japan: Production volume in 2016 increases for the first time in two years by 7.3% to 561,000 units

Japan's domestic sales in 2016 decreased by 8.3% y/y to 373,000 units. This figure was the lowest since the 1970s. Sales of first-class engine-equipped motorcycles (-50cc) in particular declined sharply, falling 16.4% y/y to 162,000 units. However, by segment, the unit sales of motorcycles (51-125cc) increased by 6.9% from the previous year to 101,000 units, recovering to the level of 100,000 units for the first time in three years.

Production of motorcycles in Japan, which exceeded 7 million units at its peak (1981), also decreased as a result of the shrinking domestic market and transfer of production overseas. However, domestic production volume in 2016 increased for the first time in two years, growing 7.3% to 561,000 units. Honda's move to shift its domestic production of first-class engine-equipped motorcycles (~50cc) from China and Vietnam to its Kumamoto Plant in Japan contributed to this increase.

Exports from Japan increased by 2.6% from the previous year to 429,000 units in 2016 thanks to increased volume for Europe and North America.
