Global motorcycle sales expected to reach 57 million units in 2013

Sales and production in China, India, Indonesia, Brazil, Taiwan, Japan and ASEAN countries

2013/04/25

Summary

This report outlines major motorcycle manufacturing countries: China, India, Indonesia, Brazil, Taiwan, and Japan.

The worldwide motorcycle demand in 2012 was down 2.9% y/y to 55.69 million units. This was caused by a nearly 10% decrease in demand in China and Indonesia (according to Yamaha).

In China, the 2012 production (including tricycles) declined by 12.5% y/y to 23.63 million units from a decrease in exports as well as purchase restriction in urban areas. The production in Indonesia and Brazil decreased by 11.6% y/y to 7.06 million units and 20.9% to 1.69 million units, respectively, from new regulations and limitations on loaning because most motorcycle purchases are made through loans. However, the production volume in India in FY2012 (fiscal year starting in April 2012) is expected to reach nearly 16 million units, a few percent increase from the previous year.

The demand for motorcycles in 2013 is estimated by Yamaha to increase by 2.1% y/y to 56.85 million units. The demand in India, which became the country with a highest demand for motorcycles overtaking China in 2012, is estimated to increase by 4.3% to 14.4 million units. Contrary to China, which is expecting a decrease of 10.3% to 11.33 million units for 2013 from a continued decrease in demand. Yamaha expects the demands in Indonesia to grow by 4.6% y/y to 7.6 million units in 2013 (as of February 2013), but there is a possibility of plummeting sales depending on loan regulations enforced by the government in the near future.

China's production volume for 2012 decreases by 12.5% to 23.63 million units from drop in export and tightened regulations

The volume manufactured in China in 2012, the world's top motorcycle (including tricycles) manufacturer, dropped 12.5% y/y to 23.63 million units setting its lowest volume in six years.

There are three factors which caused this drop: 1) the downfall of export, which accounts for 40% of the production (a decrease of 14.9% y/y to 9.67 million units), 2) lack of new products after the enforcement of the exhaust regulations "China III" for motorcycles (July 2010), 3) expansion of coverage regions for "motorcycle restriction" regulation limiting the ownership and the use of motorcycles in urban areas. Furthermore, power-assisted bicycles, which are out of scope of regulation limiting the use of motorcycles in China, with illegal modifications are eroding the motorcycle market.

It is said that there are more than 100 motorcycle manufacturers competing in China. Jiangmen Grand River Group Co., Ltd., ranked first in 2011, produced 2.42 million units (a 14.5% y/y decrease) having a 9% production share (a 1.6 percentage point decrease from last year). Loncin Holding came in second with an increase of 3.3% y/y (1.85 million units), accounting for 6.9% of the share to close the gap with Jiangmen Grand River Group in first place. The top five manufacturers (Jiangmen Grand River, Loncin Holding, Lifan Industry, Luoyang Northern Enterprises, and Zongshen Industrial Group) held only a 33.4% share; downsizing from 35.2% in 2011.

Production volume in India expected to reach almost 16 million units for FY2012; Honda expands share after dissolving joint venture partnership

India, the world's second largest motorcycle manufacturer, produced 14.48 million units during the first 11 months of FY2012 (from April 2012 to February 2013), increasing production by 2.9% y/y. It is estimated to reach 16 million units for this year. However, the volume for February decreased by 1.1% y/y to 1.30 million units, showing a decline for the first time since November 2012.

India became number one in motorcycle sales volume over China with an increase of 3.9% y/y to 12.7 million units during the 11 month period of FY2012. As with its production volume, the sales dropped by 2.7% to 1.11 million units in February alone.

Hero MotoCorp, which was in a joint venture partnership with Honda until 2011, had the most share in production with 38.6% for FY2012 (11 months period). However, the share had dropped five percentage points from 43.7% in FY2009 when it was still in a partnership with Honda. Honda's local subsidiary, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India, expanded its share to 17.3% moving up to third place; an increase of five percentage points from FY2009.

Bajaj Auto, partnering with Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI), came in second place with a 23.9% share. More than 90% of the share accounts for the top four manufacturers including TVS Motor ranked at fourth place.

2013 sales in Indonesia estimated to decrease 15% y/y to 6.03 million units

Indonesia, the third largest motorcycle manufacturer, produced 7.08 million units in 2012, but dropped 11.6% from 2011 when it marked its record highest of 8.01 million units. The 2012 sales also decreased by 11.8% y/y to 7.06 million units. The decline was caused by the tightening of financial regulations put into effect in June 2012 by the Indonesian government, which brought the down payment limitation for bank loans from 10% to 25% for purchasing motorcycles.

The government is reportedly considering placing further restriction in April 2013. With this new restriction in mind, Indonesia's motorcycle association estimated the sales to plummet by 14.6% y/y to 6.03 million units in 2013 (according to report in February 2013).

Until 2010, Honda and Yamaha equally accounted for around 45% of the share in sales respectively, but in 2011, the difference between the two companies expanded with Honda having a 53.4% share and Yamaha with 39.1%. In 2012, the difference became more than 1.5 times with Honda having a 57.9% share and Yamaha with 34.6%. The difference is speculated to have come from Honda's new model offensive since 2011 and Yamaha's target customer being more prone to be affected by the new down payment regulations.

Brazil's 2013 production volume to increase by 5.6% to 1.78 million units; volume decreased by 20.9% in 2012

Brazil, one of the major motorcycle production countries in the world, produced 1.69 million units in 2012 dropping 20.9% from 2011 when it marked its highest of 2,136K units. The decline was due to a lagging annual economic growth of 0.9% and more strict financial conditions from increasingly bad debts.

Brazilian Association of Manufacturers of motorcycles (ABRACICLO) expects the volume to grow by 5.6% y/y to 1,784K units in 2013 from bottoming out of the economy. However, cumulated production volume for January to February 2013 period was 251K units, a decrease of 24.1% y/y.

Honda overwhelmed the others with an 82.7% share in production for 2012. Yamaha followed with 9.4% and Kasinski, a part of China's Zongshen Industrial Group, with 1.8%, Suzuki with 1.4%. Japanese OEMs (including KHI) accounts for 94.1% of the share. While Honda is constantly expanding its share in the Brazilian market, Yamaha and Suzuki are losing their share in recent years.

The domestic sales for 2012 decreased by 20.5% to 1,655K units. Looking at the sales by engine displacements, the most-selling class of motorcycles between 51 to 150 cc declined by 21.5% to 1,381K units showing an overall drop. However, the models being high-end, sales for motorcycles in classes 451 cc and above increased by 10.1% to 44K units because the targeting customers were less likely to be affected by the new loan regulations. According to the Brazilian Association of Manufacturers of motorcycles (ABRACICLO), the sale volume for 2013 is expected to grow by 3.3% y/y to 1,679K units (as of December 2012). The cumulated sales volume for January to February 2013 period was 233K units, a decrease of 23.2% y/y.

Taiwan's manufactured volume for 2012 decreases by 10.1% to 1,086K units

Taiwan, a major producer of motorcycles, manufactured 1,086K units in 2012, down by 10.1% y/y. The major causes of the decrease are a drop in domestic sales from a slow economy and declining exports to Japan. In 2012, the top three manufacturers in terms of production volume were Kwang Yang with 42.4% (4.2 percentage point increase from the previous year), followed by Taiwan Yamaha with 28.3% now in second place, and San Yang with 23.8%. The three companies put together accounted for 94.5% of the share.

As with mainland China, Taiwan export about half of the motorcycles produced. Japan was the number one export country in 2012 with 31.6% of the exported motorcycles (in volume-basis). The domestic sales for 2012 decreased by 5.2% y/y to 607K units and the export dropped by 14.6% to 484K units. The ratio of domestic and export sales for classes in 50 cc and under is 2:98, meaning that most motorcycles were exported to overseas countries. By contrast, domestic and export sales ratio for models in 51-100cc classes is 9:1, showing that most motorcycles in this class were sold in-country.

Japan to slightly increase sales volume to 446K units for 2013

The production of motorcycles in Japan peaked in 1981 producing over seven million units. However, it has continued to decrease due to a shrinking domestic market and increased shifts of production sites to overseas. Since the economic crisis in 2008, the trend especially accelerated resulting in domestic production of 595K units in 2012. The decrease in production becomes more apparent with smaller displacements. Motorcycles with large displacements of over 250cc account for more than 60% of in-country production.

Domestic sales decreased by 0.6% to 442K units for 2012 and according to the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA), the sales in 2013 are expected to slightly increase to 446K units. The size of the Japanese motorcycle market which was 700K units before 2007 is now only 400K units. The decrease was caused by the introduction of more the strict exhaust regulations of 2006 applied to new models from 2006 and from 2008 for all models resulting in a decreased number of models. Tighter street parking regulations for motorcycles put into effect from November 2006 also contributed to this drop.
