Japanese production: decreases by 12.8% to 8.397 million units in 2011

In 2011, the 12 Japanese OEMs produced a total of 8.397 million units in Japan, down by 12.8% over the previous year. This is because production was suspended due to the Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred in March of the same year and production had increased in the previous year (2010) due to the government's incentive program.

Looking at the quarterly results, domestic production in Japan fell by 25.0% year-on-year in January-March and by 33.8% in April-June. In July-September, it recovered to a lesser decline of 4.3% and in October-December, it increased by 12.6%, exceeding the results of the previous year. (This is partly due to the termination of the government's incentive program in September 2010.)

Among the OEMs, Nissan's production in Japan declined only by 1.8% over the previous year in 2011, whereas Honda's production fell significantly by 28.4%.

2. In principle, production volume of Japanese brand vehicles up to 2006 are tabulated on a basis of export volume of parts for overseas production. The tabulation from 2007 includes vehicles which rolled off from production lines at overseas local plants (own-brand vehicles which rolled off from production lines at their plants, joint venture plants or other plants in which Japanese OEMs have a stake in). The tabulation does not include vehicles supplied from other companies under OEM contracts and CKD/SKD assembled vehicles.

Source: Preliminary reports by the OEMs' Public Relations
(Note) 1. Data of the eight passenger car manufacturers are from their respective preliminary reports. (The figures for Daihatsu are released from Toyota. They do not include Malaysian Perodua brand vehicles.)
2. Japanese production is based on vehicles which rolled off from the manufacturers' production lines, including complete vehicles and CKDs. Overseas production, in principle, is the volume of the manufacturers' own-brand vehicles which rolled off from their production lines (except CKD volume).
3. Toyota's production data by region are round figures, so the regional total and the overseas production volume disagree.
4. Suzuki's production by region includes vehicles which the company supplies to other manufacturers on an OEM basis. The data are round figures, so the regional total and overseas production volume disagree.
