VW continues to be strong among leading OEMs

As for the top five OEMs in sale volumes in the first half of 2013, first place Renault-Nissan increased 5.8%, second place GM went up 9.2%, third  place VW added 19.0%, fourth place Fiat-Chrysler improved 0.1% and fifth place Ford grew 4.3% compared to the same period the previous year.  As for market share, Renault-Nissan accounted for 26.4% and GM for 18.2%, both at the same level as the previous year.  By contrast, VW expanded its share by 1.3% from 2012 to 17.4%. The contributing factor behind this growth is that its best-selling model in Mexico, the Jetta, sharply increased sales by 39.4% y/y as both the new sixth-generation and the previous fourth-generation Clasico posted strong sales.  Fiat-Chrysler and Ford posted declining share with Fiat-Chrysler to 8.3%, down 0.8% y/y; and Ford to 8.0%, down 0.4%.  As demand shifted to small passenger cars after the financial crisis, these two OEMs heavily depend on small commercial vehicles including pickup trucks and small utility vehicles (SUV), thus causing the stagnant sales.
