In the new energy vehicle market in May 2020, both production and sales fell sharply year on year
According to statistics by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), production and sales volumes of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in May 2020 declined by 25.8% year-over-year (y/y) to 84,000 units and by 23.5% y/y to 82,000 units, respectively.
Analysis of NEV industry (Chinese market)
According to statistics by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM), production and sales volumes of new energy vehicles (NEVs) in May 2020 declined by 25.8% year-over-year (y/y) to 84,000 units and by 23.5% y/y to 82,000 units, respectively. Production and sales volumes of new-energy passenger cars declined by 26.3% y/y to 75,000 units and by 24.4% y/y to 74,000 units, respectively. Production and sales volumes of new-energy commercial vehicles declined by 21.1% y/y to 9,000 units and by 13.7% y/y to 8,000 units, respectively.

According to statistics by the CAAM, BYD Auto ranked first for sales volume of passenger EVs in the Jan. to May 2020 period by maker—with sales at 36,616 units, down 53.6% y/y.

By model, the Model 3 held its position as first, with sales exceeding 30,000 units in the Jan. to May period. The all-new BYD Qin Pro ranked second; the model was recently launched, but its sales were strong. Two models produced by emerging makers were in the top 15, of which the strong-selling NIO ES6 ranked fifth.

PHV
For sales volume of passenger PHVs in the Jan. to May 2020 period by maker, BMW Brilliance ranked first—with sales at 9,880 units, increasing by 8.6% y/y. BYD ranked second, with sales at 9,391 units.

By model, Leading Ideal ONE sold 2,050 units in a single month, holding its position as second in the Jan. to May period. The SAIC Volkswagen Passat ranked third, with sales down 56.2% y/y.
