Electrification by 2030 -
The OEMs’ Plans

In Europe, car manufacturers are adjusting to the fact that it will not be possible to register new cars with combustion engines in the EU from 2035 onward. How are the major carmakers managing the move to electric powertrains, including in international markets?

In June 2022, the EU made a preliminary decision about the future of the internal combustion engine, although a “back door” has apparently been left open. In essence, there will be a ban on registering new cars and light commercial vehicles with combustion engines from 2035 onward, unless they can be proven to run on renewable fuels. This means that there could still be niche applications for combustion engines, but, apart from that, the route leading to battery electric powertrains seems to have been mapped out. Whatever happens, the transition period will certainly be challenging, because car manufacturers will have to make the right choices for their next generation of models.
