On June 17, Nokian Tyre announced that it will be investing EUR 70 million to increase the production of commercial tires up to 50 percent and plans to double the number of new products.
The 3,500-square-meter R&D building will be ready by 2019. Another construction project involves expanding the production facilities. The building is constructed, and the installing the machinery is in full flight. It will reach the full capacity in 2021.
Besides enabling more capacity and future growth, the new facilities serve an important role by supporting smoother flow and safer work. The goal for the investment is to produce 50% more and more than to double the number of new products.

On June 18, Opel informed that the Opel management along with the plant management and the works council of the Kaiserslautern plant have set the course for increasing the long-term competitiveness of the site. The parties agreed among other things to invest in the construction of a facility for the hot-forming of steel. As a result, Kaiserslautern will become only plant to use this technology in the Groupe PSA production network. Moreover, the social partners agreed to keep a constant eye on new investments to secure site utilization.
According to the agreement, young skilled workers will be given permanent contracts. This also applies to the current trainees who successfully complete their training in the coming years up to 2023. In addition, the social partners agreed to hire 34 apprentices per year in the same period of time.
In order to lower the wage costs, additional employees may temporarily leave the company based on the existing social plan. The opportunity to participate in a partial retirement programme was extended to employees born in and before 1961.

On June 14, Innovusion Inc., a Los Altos, California-based leader in the design and development of hybrid solid state LiDAR systems, has announced the availability of its Cheetah system, which has the ability to provide a detection range of 200 meters on objects with 10% reflectivity and clearly detect objects out to 280 meters.
The system achieves picture-like imaging due to its high number of vertical and horizontal scanning lines covering the entire field of view.
Because of Cheetah’s exceptional image quality, its point cloud is especially suitable for fusing with camera data in the pixel level, producing a rich data set resulting in groundbreaking reliable object detection and classification.
Based on its superior performance enabled by the innovative rotating polygon approach, unique detector electronics and proprietary algorithms, the Cheetah platform is ideal for safety system architects as the main perception sensor for L3+ autonomous vehicles, thus reducing the need for multiple LiDAR systems.
Applications include vehicle safety systems, autonomous vehicle systems and V2X (vehicle-to-everything) for automobiles, trucks, buses, trains and off-road vehicles.
