On September 16, MAHLE Powertrain announced it is investing USD 4 million in a new powertrain dynamometer facility in Plymouth, Michigan, aimed at accelerating vehicle development as manufacturers continue the shift towards electrified vehicles.
The new test facility, located at MAHLE Powertrain’s engineering center in Plymouth, will work alongside the existing chassis dynamometer and will support all aspects of hybrid and battery-electric vehicle development.
By enabling the early assessment of various powertrain layouts and allowing testing to be conducted before a completed chassis is available, the new facility will help manufacturers to significantly shorten the overall development cycle.
As well as full powertrain testing and calibration work, the facility will enable the development of powertrain systems, the calibration of transmissions, hybrid and battery-electric powertrain configurations, Real Driving Emissions (RDE) measurements and electric vehicle range determination.
The state-of-the-art testbed will even support the testing and evaluation of ADAS technologies including LiDAR and RADAR sensor packs, and will feature climatic conditioning down to -10°C or up to +40°C.
The dynos are supported by a 623kW battery emulator with future expansion capacity to more than 1MW.
The new facility is expected to be ready for operation in the third quarter of 2022, with several premium automotive manufacturers already requesting time allocations.

According to multiple sources, on September 14, BYD Co., Ltd. (BYD) held a groundbreaking ceremony for the second phase of its auto industrial park in Shenzhen-Shanwei Special Cooperation Zone (Shenshan Zone).
The second phase of the project is located at Xiaomo Town and Ebu Town, Shenshan Zone (Lingang Industrial Park in the south of Shenshan). It involves a planned total investment of CNY 20 billion and covers a planned area of 3.79 million square meters. Upon completion of the construction, the facility will work as a supportive core parts manufacturing base to BYD’s NEV (New Energy Vehicle) production, focusing on the development of core parts for connected cars and port logistics.
The construction of the second phase will be divided into three blocks: Block C, D, and E. It is expected to generate an annual production value of around CNY 100 billion when it becomes operational. The site of Block C was already determined on August 9, with land levelling scheduled to complete by September 30. The facility is scheduled to start operation by July 30, 2023.
BYD invested a total of CNY 25 billion in the two phases of the Shenshan auto industrial park. When it becomes fully operational, it is expected to generate an annual production value of more than CNY 110 billion. Located at the North Advanced Manufacturing Park in the Shenshan Intelligent Manufacturing Center, the first phase focuses on developing the automotive electronics industry, including auto parts, visual radar systems, sensor systems, positioning systems, and electronic control systems.

On September 15, Continental AG (Continental) announced that it is presenting an innovative sensor solution for commercial vehicles at this year’s IAA Transportation. The multi-sensor system, also known as the Continental Sensor Array, can be mounted above the windshield of the vehicle. Continental is thus presenting a compact, integrated solution for the growing number of intelligent and automated driving systems in commercial vehicles.
In the comprehensive solution, all integrated sensors – lidar, radar, cameras – for adaptive cruise control, emergency braking and blind spot assist as well as automated driving functions are pre-calibrated and coordinated with each other. This significantly simplifies the installation of many sensors, their integration into the vehicle architecture, and the complex process of calibration.
The sensor array can be easily replaced for maintenance work. Sensors for new assistance systems can be easily integrated into the compact solution. The overall sensor system does not require any fundamental modifications to the driver’s cab or vehicle body for future generations of trucks. Continental has an automatic "Camera and Sensor Cleaning, Cooling and Heating" system in its portfolio. All sensors independently monitor the degree of their pollution.
