ZF announced that a current volume order worth several billion euros covers the supply of conventional, but primarily mild and plug-in hybrid variants of the fourth-generation 8-speed transmission (8HP). In addition, key components for pure electric drives such as power electronics and e-motors are also part of the scope of supply. The "Modular eDrive Kit" comprises three power classes as well as the "Premium" (800V SiC) and "Basic" (400V) segments. Three e-drives comprising the "Modular eDrive Kit" are about to enter series production: a "Low" drive solution below 100 kW, a "Mid" drive solution up to 200 kW - both based on ASM or PSM machines and an inverter with 400-volt technology - and a "High" solution with an output of over 200 kW, which will enter series production in the second half of 2022 and combines a PSM machine with a silicon carbide-based inverter with 800-volt technology. The eConnect is a flexible solution for all-wheel drive vehicles. The system, which is designed to be installation space-neutral, leaves the second axle uncoupled to save energy as long as it is not needed. This reduces mechanical drag losses by up to 90 percent. If required, eConnect can engage the second drive within milliseconds via a claw coupling without any losses. (From a press release on September 6, 2021)

Dana Inc. announced an expansion of its Spicer Electrified e-Powertrain offerings to include a family of single and tandem e-Axles designed for a wide variety of Class 7 and 8 applications, with commitments from global OEMs for deliveries beginning in late 2023. The Spicer Electrified Zero-8 e-Axles complement Dana's established heavy-duty electric-vehicle (EV) e-Propulsion systems, which currently power thousands of vehicles around the world. The new Zero-8 e-Axles leverage Dana's most robust and efficient drive axle technology to meet a diverse landscape of Class 7 and 8 EV architectures with multi-faceted electric powertrain solutions, including systems for direct drive and now 4x2, 6x2, and 6x4 multi-speed e-Axle systems. The platform utilizes Dana's vertically integrated technologies, including Dana TM4 motors and inverters, Spicer high-efficiency axle gearing, Graziano synchronizers, transmission controllers, system software, and shift system and controls. The 4x2, 6x2, and 6x4 configurations are compatible with drum or disc brakes, and are available as completely integrated fully dressed assemblies. The e-Axles range from 52,000 Nm to 69,000 Nm of nominal output torque, and support gross axle weight ratings (GAWR) from 21,000 to 30,000 pounds for single e-Axle configurations, and 40,000 to 52,000 pounds for tandem e-Axle propulsion. On August 23, CeramTec GmbH announced that it will present its recently developed ceramic cooling solution for a power module that is used in inverters in the drive trains of electric cars. It helps to ensure that the regulation and control in electromobility function safely and reliably.
To ensure efficient heat dissipation, the new generation of ceramic cooling systems uses chip-on-heatsink technology to attach the chip directly to the metallised ceramic heat sink. In this way, it is particularly close to the cooling liquid. To achieve this, the structured copper sheets are applied directly to the front and back of the ceramic cooler. By means of this structure, it is also possible to use both sides as circuit carriers and to cool them simultaneously.
The inner cooling structure of the ceramic is designed as a pin-fin structure. This significantly increases the heat transfer surface of the heat sink and enables ideal circulation around the pin-fin surface. In this way, heat is optimally dissipated and at the same time the structure increases the mechanical strength, which can thus absorb pressure, torsion and bending forces well. Based on the thermal characterisation, the performance of the module was impressively confirmed in the PowerCycling test. The thermal resistance of the power module with Pin-Fin ceramic cooler is 0.15 K sq-cm/W at the design point from the chip to the cooling water.
