On October 18, Hyundai Motor Group held a ceremony to celebrate the opening of China Future Digital R&D Center in Shanghai.
This facility marks the first overseas digital R&D facility established by Hyundai Motor Group in China. Located at The Roof, Shanghai, it covers an area of about 5,200㎡, focusing on technologies such as mobility, electrification, connectivity, and autonomous driving.
There are six departments in this center, namely, infotainment development department, autonomous driving development department, UX (User Experience) research department, Hyundai Shanghai design department, Kia Shanghai design department, and innovation development department.
Since entering the Chinese market in 2002, Hyundai Motor Group has been committed to developing products and technologies that are more suitable for the Chinese market. In 2013, Hyundai Motor Group established and started operating Hyundai Motor Kia China R&D Center in Yantai, Shandong Province. This R&D center has more than 1,000 local engineers, covering the entire vehicle development process including product planning, design, engineering design, prototypes, and vehicle testing.
In 2017, Hyundai Motor Group also set up a China Big Data Center in Guizhou Province. Based on massive vehicle data, this center continuously applies research results to the entire industry chain including R&D, production and sales of local products in China.
In the future, Shanghai, Yantai and Guizhou will form a “triangle” of Hyundai Motor Group's R&D layout in China, which may assist the automaker in accelerating the establishment of a future R&D system in local areas.
In addition, Hyundai Motor Group opened the Hyundai CRADLE Beijing, an innovation center, in 2019.
