Volkswagen is investigating using Qualcomm's computer chips in the updated MEB Plus electric platform as well as the premium-targeted PPE platform, head of VW's Cariad software division Dirk Hilgenberg said at the sidelines of the CES 2023 show earlier this month.
The VW's original plan, announced in May 2022, was to use Qualcomm’s chips to power autonomous and semi-autonomous functions in VW Group's Unified architecture, which will eventually replace the MEB and PPE platforms.
However, Cariad is now considering fitting Qualcomm's Snapdragon Ride and new Ride Flex chip platform in EVs that are due as soon as 2024.
Qualcomm's new Ride Flex chip, introduced at CES, processes both driver assistance and digital cockpit (infotainment) functions on the same chip, thereby reducing the number of chips needed.
More mainstream VW Group models will use the Ride Flex chip while premium cars will use the ADAS-only Ride Flex chip, according to Qualcomm head of automotive Nakul Duggan.
The PPE platform will launch with the new-gen Porsche Macan due in 2024 while MEB Plus is expected to launch in 2026.
The Unified platform, also called SSP (for Scalable Systems Platform) will reportedly debut in 2028 instead of 2026 partly because of software delays.
VW was forced to adjust its software strategy after early problems with the ID3 electric compact and other MEB platform cars.
Any decision to advance the fitment of Qualcomm chips would mean replacing those supplied by Intel-owned Mobileye, which now supports VW's IQ-Drive advanced driver assistance system functions on MEB cars.

On January 12, Aiways announced that it has introduced an all-new infotainment system and its intelligent AI-Tech UX in the new Aiways U6 SUV coupe. The new 14.6-inch diagonal touchscreen display in widescreen orientation sits conveniently high on the dashboard without impairing the view from the windshield. In combination with the 8.2-inch driver information display, the new Aiways U6 SUV coupe offers the largest screen area in its class.
The development team opted for a zero-layer approach for the new Aiways U6 SUV coupe. Instead of layered and complicated sub-menus, everything you need to drive, entertain and communicate is at a glance on the home screen. The heart of the 14.6-inch screen area is the main widget, which is displayed on almost two-thirds of the area. Depending on the driver's wishes and personalization, various functions can be displayed and used here in the highest degree of detail.
For the first time, the Aiways U6 SUV coupé not only integrates the smartphones of the passengers via Apple CarPlay, but also via Android Auto. After the latest update of the Google system at CES 2023 in Las Vegas, the Android software also supports a split-screen display, enabling faster and improved operation. Both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are optimally adapted in their split-screen view to the display in the zero-layer approach of the AI-Tech UX.
