Reported on March 28, 2022, the first ever Malaysia-assembled CKD unit of Porsche Cayenne has rolled off the production line at Sime Darby’s assembly plant in Kulim, Kedah, the first assembly facility for Porsche outside of Europe. The base Cayenne is currently the only model being produced locally in CKD form. Meanwhile, other variants of the Cayenne will remain as CBU units, despite that the plant is able to scaled up to produce other variants or other models should there be demand. Though it would not be anytime soon, but it is a possibility, said Sime Darby Motors Managing Director. Meanwhile, Porsche AG board member hinted at further plans, including ASEAN exports.
Construction of the plant started in December 2020, using an existing warehouse as a base before turning it into a high-tech facility. All staffs are Malaysians who have been comprehensively trained by Porsche, with production being supported by a network of local suppliers and service providers. Six key modules are sourced locally – center console and cockpit (Clarion), front and rear axles (ZF), and the front-end module assembly.

On February 14, SABIC announced that it has collaborated with Dongfeng Motors, one of the largest truck manufacturers in China, on the development of a novel plastic composite hybrid solution to produce a strong lightweight truck-mounted toolbox. The application is made with a combination of SABIC’s STAMAX resin, a long glass fibre polypropylene (PP), and continuous glass fibre composite laminate inserts via a single overholding process. The finished part is lighter by up to 30% compared to a similarly designed part in steel.
In addition to truck toolboxes, automotive applications for this hybrid solution with STAMAX resin can potentially include tailgates, seating, front-end modules and battery housings for electric vehicles. SABIC’s hybrid solution combines STAMAX resin with thermoformed composite inserts made of unidirectional (UD) glass fibre-reinforced PP tape from China-based Qiyi Tech, a company dedicated to the development and production of continuous fibre reinforced thermoplastic composite materials. The laminate inserts are pre-heated before being placed in the tool and overfolded with STAMAX resin in a single operation.
