Eaton Corporation plc (Eaton) announced that it has developed a number of 48V technologies to assist its commercial vehicle customers in transitioning from 12V and 24V vehicle systems to systems that can use 48V architecture. The shift towards 48V architectures is designed to power advanced in-vehicle systems while reducing emissions and improving fuel economy. Eaton’s 48V technologies include motor generators and inverters which generate power for the vehicle. Eaton is developing power electronics for 48V electric catalyst heating to reduce NOx emissions. Other 48V systems under development include an electrical engine cooling fan and electric air conditioning compressor. Finally, Eaton is also developing 48V energy storage solutions including lead-acid batteries and supercapacitors. (From a press release dated August 10, 2021)

On June 3, Kia announced that it has made substantial upgrades to its smallest model, the Picanto, due on-sale in Europe during the third quarter of 2020.
Offering a range of new safety and telematics technologies often reserved for larger, more expensive vehicles, the upgraded model also boasts lower emissions from newly reengineered powertrains, and striking design updates, inside and out.
It also offers Kia’s new ‘Phase II’ UVO Connect telematics technologies, enhancing vehicle connectivity and control to take the stress out of journeys. Enhancements to the Picanto’s gasoline powertrain line-up include Kia’s optional new Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) for a smoother drive.
The upgraded Picanto is available in Europe with two new ‘Smartstream’ gasoline engines, each maximizing efficiency and lowering CO2 emissions compared to their predecessors. The engine line-up features a 1.0-liter T-GDi (Turbocharged Gasoline Direct injection) engine producing 100 ps, and a naturally-aspirated 1.0-liter engine, producing 67 ps.
Both engines are equipped with a new Integrated Thermal Management System (ITMS), which provides more effective combustion chamber cooling. ITMS varies engine cooling characteristics based on the engine’s operating point. The updated Picanto is the first model equipped with Kia’s new Automated Manual Transmission (AMT).
The upgraded Picanto features several of Kia’s latest Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), and a range of new active safety systems to enhance occupant safety, making it one of the safest cars in its class.
The updated Kia Picanto will go on sale across Europe in the third quarter of 2020, with the company’s unique 7-Year, 100,000-mile warranty as standard. UK specification, on-sale date and pricing will be announced in due course.

On May 25, Concentric AB announced that it is working with several major OEM’s for the US SuperTruck II initiative. This is the second phase of the US Department of Energy (DoE) sponsored project to develop and demonstrate cost-effective advanced technologies that show a substantial increase in fuel efficiency of Class 8 trucks. These diverse projects are all aimed towards improving fuel savings and reducing CO2 emissions through more efficient fluid control, featuring various new pump technologies for heavy-duty applications in the US truck market. The project will develop two design variants of fully electric water pumps for main engine cooling, a mechanical oil pump design with electro-hydraulic pressure controlled re-circulation for main engine lubrication, and an auxiliary fully electric oil pump for piston cooling.
The SuperTruck projects represent an excellent opportunity for Concentric to drive future sales growth in the 2024/5 timeframe and beyond.
