On October 1, BMTS Technology (formerly Bosch MAHLE Turbo Systems) announced that it has developed a turbocharger with an electric drive system, the “Cross Charger”, with G+L innotec and Swoboda, a supplier of high-precision, innovative components and systems for the automotive industry.
In this type of electrified turbocharger, the electric motor is located in the compressor housing in front of the compressor wheel, instead of behind it as is usually the case. This special design has the advantage that the electric motor is exposed to less thermal stress. The particularly large air gap of the so-called media gap motor between the stator and rotor cools the magnet, which increases the permanent power of the motor. In addition, the actuator's special installation in the turbocharger makes it modular and easy to industrialize.
The range of applications is generally broad, and practical trials are currently underway. The partners see great potential for electrically assisted turbochargers, particularly with a view to the EU7 emissions standard. In electrified turbochargers, e-motors are used to optimally support the turbocharging process and improve response. In addition, e-turbos enable further measures such as low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation, Millerzation or lean-burn processes, which increase the efficiency of conventional engines and reduce emissions.

On July 19, Daimler announced since the end of last year, the Sprinter Panel Van and the Chassis Cab variant with rear-wheel drive are available with the powerful and efficient OM654 four-cylinder diesel engine from the powertrain portfolio of Mercedes-Benz Cars. This autumn, the switch for all the other versions will follow. This significantly improves driving comfort in the Sprinter 2021.
The OM 654 engine generation, which conforms to the Euro VI-E and Euro 6d emissions norms, offers further improved noise and vibration characteristics. This means it is pleasantly quiet inside the Sprinter and disruptive vibrations have been reduced. The combination of an aluminum housing with steel pistons, the stepped recess combustion process and the NANOSLIDE cylinder wall coating for reduced in-engine friction, together with the dynamic multi-way exhaust gas recirculation and the in-engine exhaust gas aftertreatment, facilitate lower consumption as well as low emissions. Due to its near-engine position, the exhaust gas aftertreatment works with little heat loss and in optimum conditions.
The OM654 engine is available in four output categories for the Sprinter, depending on the drive and body variant selected: 84 kW (114 hp), 110 kW (150 hp), 125 kW (170 hp) and 140 kW (190 hp).
As a further innovation, Mercedes-Benz has combined the modern 2.0-litre engine with the 9G-TRONIC automatic transmission for the rear-wheel drive Sprinter too. The 6-speed manual transmission remains unchanged in the range.
Further details on the OM654 in the Sprinter will be available in the autumn for the sales launch.

On July 9, Hyundai Assan announced that it continues its SUV model offensive in Turkey with the new Santa Fe. The new Santa Fe is offered for sale with a 230 hp 1.6-liter T-GDI Hybrid engine option.
Hyundai Assan, which attracted all the attention by offering the B-SUV model BAYON last week, now maintains its claim in the SUV segment with the new Santa Fe. New Santa Fe also exhibits a very successful stance with its premium material quality and powerful engine. It is positioned in the D-SUV segment.

Equipped with the next-generation 1.6-liter T-GDi "Smartstream" engine, the premium car is the first to use Hyundai's new Continuously Variable Valve Time (CVVD) technology. This system, which prioritizes fuel efficiency as well as performance, has the "Low Pressure Exhaust Gas Recirculation (LP EGR)" feature to further optimize the engine. The CVVC system provides a noticeable increase in performance by regulating the opening and closing time of the valve according to driving conditions. It also offers improvements in fuel efficiency and emissions.
Among other improvements, Hyundai also includes electrification in the Santa Fe model. Supporting the turbo gasoline engine with hybrid technology, Hyundai offers engine performance and fuel economy together, thus meeting customer expectations in the SUV segment in the best way possible. Produced with a brand-new platform, Santa Fe makes the work of electric powertrains easier as well as significant improvements in safety. The direct injection turbocharged engine produces 230 horsepower in combination with the 44.2 kW electric motor, while providing a maximum torque of 350 Nm. This electric motor, which transfers its power to a 1.49 kWh lithium-ion polymer battery.
