On March 5, FCA introduced plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) versions of the Jeep Compass and Jeep Renegade at the 2019 Geneva International Motor Show.
Both Jeep SUVs feature a battery, rechargeable by the internal combustion engine or by the plug-in charging cable, to power an electric motor that offers a pure electric range of approximately 50 kilometers and a 130 km/h full electric top speed in both Renegade and Compass.
The new electric all-wheel-drive technology (eAWD), traction to the rear axle is not provided by a prop shaft but through a dedicated electric motor, enabling the two axles to be separated and to control the torque independently in a more effective way than a mechanical system.
The electric motor in each works in synergy with a new 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine to increase overall power to 240 hp, enabling the Renegade to reach 0-100 km/h in approximately 7 seconds.
The greater torque offered by the electric motor, and the ability to adjust it during take-off and while driving on challenging terrain where a very low transmission ratio is needed, further improves Jeep’s off-road capability.
