On October 21, at Shiyan Industrial Park of Dongfeng Motor Parts and Components Group Co., Ltd. (DFPC), Knorr-Bremse DETC Commercial Vehicle Braking Technology Co., Ltd. (Knorr-Bremse DETC) held a ceremony to celebrate the start of production at its new plant.
The plant is located in the DFPC Industrial Park, which is included in the geographical range of Shiyan New Industrial Park in Hubei Province. With a total investment of CNY 300 million, the first phase project of the plant occupies a land area of around 38,700 square meters and has a total floor area of 24,800 square meters. Its construction began in August 2020. The plant integrates the brake plant, the air compressor plant and the steering plant. Upon completion, with electronic business being the core, the plant will devote itself to the businesses of brake, air compressor, wheel-end, powertrain, and steering, becoming an intelligent green plant that specializes in R&D, production and application.
On that day, the intelligent driving of a heavy-duty truck was demonstrated at the scene. The heavy-duty truck was provided by Dongfeng Commercial Vehicle Co., Ltd. (Dongfeng Trucks), supporting Level-3 autonomous driving. The Air Processing Unit (APU), Advanced Hybrid Power Steering (AHPS), Air Disk Brake (ADB), Blind-spot Collision-avoidance Assist (BCA), Electronic Braking System (EBS) and Electronic Stability Program (ESP) on this heavy-duty truck are all produced by Knorr-Bremse DETC.

Garrett Motion Inc. (Garrett Motion) announced that it plans to begin serial production of its Electric Turbo (E-Turbo) on a new state-of-the-art, fully dedicated and automated production line beginning in the fourth quarter of 2021. The technology is expected to be introduced next year for the first time at scale in Mercedes-AMG premium hybrid vehicles. Garrett Motion is engaged in multiple other electrification projects with customers worldwide for both passenger and commercial vehicles. The E-Turbo utilizes a high-speed electric motor positioned on the turbo shaft to spool the compressor more rapidly and eliminate lag, dramatically improving transient engine performance and low-end engine torque. The E-Turbo can recuperate otherwise wasted energy as an electrical generator to power the hybrid motor directly or recharge the battery in certain driving situations. On October 1, BMTS Technology (formerly Bosch MAHLE Turbo Systems) announced that it has developed a turbocharger with an electric drive system, the “Cross Charger”, with G+L innotec and Swoboda, a supplier of high-precision, innovative components and systems for the automotive industry.
In this type of electrified turbocharger, the electric motor is located in the compressor housing in front of the compressor wheel, instead of behind it as is usually the case. This special design has the advantage that the electric motor is exposed to less thermal stress. The particularly large air gap of the so-called media gap motor between the stator and rotor cools the magnet, which increases the permanent power of the motor. In addition, the actuator's special installation in the turbocharger makes it modular and easy to industrialize.
The range of applications is generally broad, and practical trials are currently underway. The partners see great potential for electrically assisted turbochargers, particularly with a view to the EU7 emissions standard. In electrified turbochargers, e-motors are used to optimally support the turbocharging process and improve response. In addition, e-turbos enable further measures such as low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation, Millerzation or lean-burn processes, which increase the efficiency of conventional engines and reduce emissions.
