On February 8, Nissan Brasil announced it will participate in a joint project with the Itaipu Technological Park (PTI) and the Institute of Applied Technology and Innovation (Itai) for the development of bidirectional chargers.
The equipment allows the car owner to transfer unused battery power from their EVs to the grid for use in home and offices.
"The consumer can even have an extra income because he can charge the car in a time of low consumption, when the energy is cheaper, to resell at peak times, when it is more expensive," said Marco Silva, president of Nissan Brazil.
Silva noted that while this type of equipment would cost USD 20,000 per station by importing it from the U.S., the idea would be for it to be produced locally in Brazil.
PTI technical director Claudio Osako says the institute had been working on the development of two-way power plants, but "To test this project we needed two-way electric cars, which receive and transfer energy, and for now, only the Leaf model has this technology."
