On January 1, the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) granted General Motors a patent for a “System for Retrofitting Vehicle Automation”.
The relevant work was carried out in San Francisco by GM Cruise LLC, with Kyle Vogt, co-founder of Cruise Automation, listed as one of the inventors.
GM’s vision for retrofitting vehicle automation instructs that the vehicle will be given a new central computer which will operate in tandem with the original factory ECU.
Information will be fed to the central computer via a rooftop-mounted sensor suite and a front-mounted radar unit.
When operating in assisted cruise or fully autonomous mode, the vehicle will receive information from the sensor suite, which will include at least two or more cameras, a radar unit, a GPS unit, and an internal measurement unit, as well as possible sonar units, LiDAR, microphones, or photodetectors.
The patent describes the addition of a second master cylinder and a separate set of brake lines, which can activate the brakes autonomously or aid in accident avoidance.
To steer the car, the existing steering column would be surrounded by three electric motors.

On February 8 Dongfeng Automobile Co., Ltd. (Dongfeng) announced recalls effective February 28, 2018 for 689,031 vehicles including the next-generation Lannia, TIIDA, and Sylphy. The vehicles that are the target of the recall were produced during the period from April 6, 2015 to July 21, 2017.
The seals of the brake master cylinder of those vehicles were found to be faulty, and could cause safety issues. The automaker will provide silicone oil and new brake master cylinders to affected vehicles for free.
