On September 7, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger predicted that semiconductors will account for more than 20% of the total premium vehicle bill of materials (BOM) by 2030, representing a staggering 5X growth rate over 2019’s 4% figure, and coming amid increasing demand for semiconductors generally.
Gelsinger predicted the total addressable market (TAM) for automotive semiconductors will nearly double by the end of the decade to USD 115 billion, accounting for more than 11% of the entire silicon TAM.
Gelsinger described the situation as both a massive challenge and enormous opportunity.
Gelsinger reiterated that Intel will build at least two new leading-edge semiconductor factories in Europe with plans for future investments that could reach EUR 80 billion over the next decade.
Intel Foundry Services, announced in March 2021, is actively engaged in discussions with potential customers in Europe – including automotive companies and their suppliers.
Intel plans to establish committed foundry capacity at its fab in Ireland and launch the Intel Foundry Services Accelerator to help automotive chip designers transition to advanced nodes.
For this, the company is standing up a new design team and offering both custom and industry-standard intellectual property (IP) to support the unique needs of automotive customers.
Intel subsidiary Mobileye has showed progress toward full autonomy by revealing its production AV equipped with Mobileye Drive, Mobileye’s full self-driving system, and bearing the MoovitAV services branding.
A new law recently passed in Germany will enable Mobileye to bring autonomous ride-hailing into operation with Munich-based Sixt SE starting in 2022.

On August 27, Beijing Benz Automotive Co., Ltd. (Beijing Benz) launched its next-generation long-wheelbase C-Class. The vehicle has 3 models, priced at between CNY 325,200 and 369,200.
It adopts the aesthetic design of “New Luxuryism 2.0”. It is equipped with a grille that resembles la starry sky, as well as digital headlights bearing a resemblance to the scene of a meteor shower.
The size of the vehicle is 4,882mm long, 1,820mm wide and 1,456 (1,461) mm high, with a wheelbase of 2,954 mm. The wheelbase of this model is 34mm longer than that of the previous one.
The powertrain features an inline-four engine which enjoys a maximum power output of 125kW/150kW and a peak torque of 250Nm/300Nm. Its integrated starter generator (ISG) increases maximum power output by 15kW and peak torque by 200Nm.
All models of this vehicle possess functions such as a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel, an 11.9-inch console touchscreen, an intelligent parking system with backup camera, and an Active Brake Assist system.

JTEKT Corporation (JTEKT) announced that development of a highly durable, highly corrosion resistant bearing for use in hydrogen circulation pumps of fuel cell vehicles (FCVs). By adapting a new material and heat-treating, it has more than 10 times the durability and corrosion resistance of conventional products. The longer service life in a hydrogen environment has made it possible to reduce the size and weight of the unit and reduce friction, and has also made it possible to use the bearing in applications where conventional rolling bearings could not be used due to concerns about early failure caused by hydrogen embrittlement.
