On October 1, BMTS Technology (formerly Bosch MAHLE Turbo Systems) announced that it has developed a turbocharger with an electric drive system, the “Cross Charger”, with G+L innotec and Swoboda, a supplier of high-precision, innovative components and systems for the automotive industry.
In this type of electrified turbocharger, the electric motor is located in the compressor housing in front of the compressor wheel, instead of behind it as is usually the case. This special design has the advantage that the electric motor is exposed to less thermal stress. The particularly large air gap of the so-called media gap motor between the stator and rotor cools the magnet, which increases the permanent power of the motor. In addition, the actuator's special installation in the turbocharger makes it modular and easy to industrialize.
The range of applications is generally broad, and practical trials are currently underway. The partners see great potential for electrically assisted turbochargers, particularly with a view to the EU7 emissions standard. In electrified turbochargers, e-motors are used to optimally support the turbocharging process and improve response. In addition, e-turbos enable further measures such as low-pressure exhaust gas recirculation, Millerzation or lean-burn processes, which increase the efficiency of conventional engines and reduce emissions.

On September 21, Kendrion N.V. acquired 3T, a Netherlands-based software and electronics development company.  3T’s extensive experience in software and electronics development is expected to be strategically important for Kendrion’s Automotive Group, where the increasing content of leading-edge electronic components in passenger cars and commercial vehicles, offers a significant growth opportunity. 3T will be integrated into Kendrion’s Business Group IAC, where it will combine with IACs control technology activities. Kendrion has acquired 100% of 3T’s shares.
Kendrion N.V. will benefit from 3T’s 30-plus years of experience in advanced software and electronics development, de-risking the development of its ‘lighthouse’ projects around sound actuation, smart shock absorber actuators and sensor cleaning systems. These products are targeted at Autonomous, Connected, Electric and Shared vehicles. With facilities in Enschede and Eindhoven, 3T employs some 80 FTE, and realizes around EUR 12 million in annual profitable revenues.

Plastic Omnium announced a number of innovations and events that confirm its involvement in the clean, connected mobility of tomorrow at the IAA 2021. It announced a new generation of 4D imaging radar, developed with Greenerwave. It will take vehicle obstacle detection capability to a next level, enhancing driving safety. It promises to detect the vehicle's environment at long range (up to 300 meters) with a resolution ten times higher than that of current radars. After the presentation of the first prototypes in 2022, this new technology should help accelerate the development of autonomous vehicles by 2025. Hyundai has selected Plastic Omnium to equip its new Multi-Purpose Vehicle STARIA with hydrogen storage systems. This contract represents a total volume of more than 30,000 units per year, from 2023. Type IV 700- bar High-Pressure Vessels (HPV) is designed in Europe and China and produced in Korea, in Plastic Omnium’s plant of Gyeong-Ju. With an investment of EUR 30 million. HBPO, a leader in complex modules has won the first order for its innovative electric charge port door module. HBPO’s Lid module is an innovative and versatile solution enabling various closing mechanisms, such as an actuator-driven lid capable of remote automatic opening and closing. Plastic Omnium also displays new generations of Smart Face and Smart Tailgate, intelligent bumpers and tailgates, complete systems that integrate a fuel tank and a fuel cell with a power output of up to 200 kW, new generation of front-end modules etc at the event.
