Business Overview

-The Company develops, manufactures, and sells products and assemblies destined for the automotive industry. They include lightweight components, thermal and acoustic shielding systems, cylinder-head and specialty gaskets, battery and fuel cell systems, and complete electric drive units.

-As of December 31, 2022, the company had 46 offices in 20 countries with approximately 9,500 employees.

-The Company's business operations are comprised of four business segments:

  • Original Equipment, which is divided into five business units – Lightweighting/Elastomer Technology, Metal Sealing Systems & Drivetrain Components, Metal Forming & Assembly Technology, E-mobility, and Exhaust Gas Purification.

-On January 2023, the Company renamed its "Shielding Technology" business unit "Metal Forming & Assembly Technology. The new name reflects the broad positioning of the business unit, whose portfolio encompasses not only shielding products for combustion engines but increasingly also stamped and formed metal components as well as assemblies targeted at the e-mobility sector. The new business unit will be complemented by established product groups for shielding applications, such as ElroShield or ElroCoustic. The product portfolio will continue to be consistently targeted at new types of drive systems and will include covers and housings for batteries and drive trains. In addition, the portfolio includes shielding parts such as high-voltage connector caps, brake cover plates, and acoustic and thermal shielding parts. (From a press release on January 3, 2023)

-Sales of the Original Equipment segment accounted for 78% of the Company’s total sales in FY ended Dec. 31, 2022.

-By region, sales in Germany accounted for 20.3%, Europe (excluding Germany) 29.3%, North America 25.7%, Asia Pacific 19.7%, and South America and Others 4.9%.

History

1879 Paul Lechler founded a trading firm for technical products and gaskets in Stuttgart.
1885 Richard Klinger founded an engineering workshop in Vienna.
1900 Lechler OHG sold its first gaskets to the automotive industry at the turn of the century.
1914 Lechler launched the production of gaskets in Stuttgart.
1930 The first Klinger cylinder head gaskets were manufactured.
1964 Production and sales of Lechler gaskets were amalgamated in Elring Dichtungswerke KG.
1971 Elring acquired an interest in Guma S.A., Spain, in the meantime known as ElringKlinger, S.A.
1972 Elring's production and development were transferred from Stuttgart/Bad Cannstatt to Dettingen/Erms.
New manufacturing plants opened in Bietigheim and Langenzenn.
1983 Klinger classes its activities in favor of the international automotive industry.
Elring Gaskets (PTY) Ltd. was founded in Johannesburg/RSA as a joint venture company.
1988 Klinger Automotive Ltd., since known as ElringKlinger (GB) Ltd., was founded in Skelton/GB.
1990 Jell Elring Co. Ltd. was founded in Changwon/Korea as a joint venture company.
1993 Changchun Elring Gaskets Co. Ltd. was founded in China as a joint venture company.

Completed the acquisition of a 66.7 % interest in the Hug Group, a Swiss exhaust treatment system manufacturer.
Concluded a purchase agreement for the purpose of acquiring a 90 % interest in Hummel-Formen GmbH, Lenningen, Germany, a manufacturer of injection molding tools used in plastics processing.
Jan. 2012 Acquired the metal housing manufacturer ThaWa GmbH.
Jul. 2012 Inaugurated a newly built factory for plastic housing modules in Dettingen/Erms.
Dec. 2012 Japanese joint venture, ElringKlinger Marusan, established a subsidiary and production facilities in Indonesia.
