U.S. car sales up 3.1% in December, up 0.4% for 2016
U.S. light vehicle sales of 1,690,429 units in December were up 3.1% as compared to the same month in 2015.
Truck and SUV sales rose 8.3% from last December to 1,065,592 units, while passenger car sales declined 4.7% to 624,837 units.
Total sales for 2016 were up 0.4% to 17,550,351 units.
Truck and SUV sales for the full year were up 7.2% to 10,445,189 units, while passenger car sales were down 8.1% to 7,105,162 units for 2016.
The overall SAAR for December of 18.43 million units set a record for 2016.
The SAAR was 7.26 million units for passenger cars and 11.17 million units for trucks.
General Motors sales were up 9.9% based on the strength of passenger car sales, which increased 20.9% from last December.
Ford sales were up 0.1% and FCA sales were down 10.0% compared to December sales last year.
Among Japanese companies, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and Subaru sales were up 2.0%, 9.7%, 6.4%, and 12.3% respectively compared to last December.
Kia sales increased 0.2%, while Hyundai sales decreased 1.9% from last year.
Among German companies, Daimler and BMW sales declined 4.8% and 5.3% respectively, while Volkswagen Group sales increased 17.1% from the same month last year.
Volvo sales increased 8.4%, while Jaguar Land Rover sales increased 30.5% from last December.

U.S. light vehicle sales of 1,380,558 units in November were up 3.7% as compared to the same month in 2015.
Truck and SUV sales rose 8.5% from last November to 849,450 units, while total passenger car sales declined 3.1% to 531,108 units.
The overall SAAR for November 2016 was 17.87 million units.
The SAAR was 7.16 million units for passenger cars and 10.71 million units for trucks.
General Motors sales were up 10.2% and Ford sales were up 5.1% compared to November sales last year.
FCA’s November total sales were down 14.3% due to lower fleet sales.
Among Japanese companies, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, and Subaru sales were up 4.3%, 7.5%, 6.5%, and 11.4% respectively compared to last November.
Kia sales increased 15.3%, while Hyundai sales increased 4.2% from last year.
Among German companies, Daimler sales were basically flat, selling only 15 more units than last November.
Volkswagen Group sales were up 15.7%, while BMW sales were down 15.7% from the same month last year.
Volvo sales increased 11.9% and Jaguar Land Rover sales increased 18.9% from last November.

With two less selling days in the month, U.S. light vehicle sales of 1,372,320 units in October were down 5.8% as compared to the same month in 2015.
Truck and SUV sales rose 0.8% from last October to 845,858 units, while total passenger car sales declined 14.8% to 526,462 units.
The overall SAAR for October 2016, based on 26 selling days versus 28 days last year, was 18.02 million units.
The SAAR was 7.08 million units for passenger cars and 10.94 million units for trucks.
General Motors sales were down 1.7% and FCA’s sales were down 10.3% compared to October sales last year.
Because of a fire at its world headquarters in Dearborn, Ford’s October sales were delayed, but finally reported to be 187,692 units, down 11.9% from the same month last year.
Among Japanese companies, Toyota, Nissan, and Honda sales were down 8.7%, 2.2%, and 4.2%, respectively, while Subaru sales were up 4.1%.
Kia sales decreased 2.1%, while Hyundai sales increased 4.2% from last October.
Among German companies, Daimler, BMW and VW sales decreased 2.1%, 16.5% and 11.2%, respectively.
Volvo sales decreased 15.9%, while Jaguar Land Rover sales increased 6.9% from last October.

U.S. light vehicle sales of 1,435,689 units in September were down 0.5% compared to the same month in 2015.
Truck and SUV sales rose 4.5% from last year to 860,575 units, while total passenger car sales declined 7.1% to 575,114 units.
The overall SAAR for September 2016, calculated based on the number of selling days, was 17.76 million units.
The SAAR was 7.24 million units for passenger cars and 10.51 million units for trucks.
Among the Big 3, GM, Ford, and FCA sales were down 0.6%, 8.1%, and 0.1%, respectively, compared to September sales last year.
Among Japanese companies, Toyota, Nissan, and Subaru sales were up 1.5%, 4.9%, and 3.5%, respectively, while Honda sales were down 0.1%.
Kia sales decreased 1.2%, while Hyundai sales increased 4.1% from last September.
Among German companies, Daimler sales increased 3.1% as BMW and VW sales decreased 5.1% and 3.6%, respectively.
Volvo sales were up 1.6% and Jaguar Land Rover sales were up 21.2% in September.

U.S. car sales fall 4.1% in August
U.S. light vehicle sales of 1,512,556 units in August were down 4.1% compared to the same month in 2015. (The correction of FCA sales form -2.4% to +3.1% has not been reflected.)
Truck and SUV sales rose 2.5% from last year to 911,573 units, while total passenger car sales declined 12.6% to 600,983 units.
The overall SAAR for August 2016, calculated based on the number of selling days, was 17.00 million units.
The SAAR was 6.78 million units for passenger cars and 10.22 million units for trucks.
Although light truck sales were up, overall sales were down across a broad swath of manufacturers.
Among the Big 3, GM, Ford, and FCA sales were down 5.2%, 8.8%, and 2.4% respectively, compared to August sales last year. FCA later corrected its sales from -2.4% to +3.1%.
Among Japanese companies, Toyota, Nissan, and Honda sales were down 5.0%, 6.5%, and 3.8%, respectively.
Subaru sales were up 14.7% from August last year.
Kia sales decreased 7.9%, while Hyundai sales were basically flat compared with last August.
Among German companies, Daimler sales increased 2.1% as BMW and VW sales decreased 7.2%, and 4.5%, respectively.
Volvo sales were up 30.9% and Jaguar Land Rover sales were up 46.5% in August.

U.S. car sales increase 0.7% in July
U.S. light vehicle sales of 1,522,144 units in July were up 0.7% compared to the same month in 2015.
Truck and SUV sales rose 8.4% from last year to 912,854 units, while total passenger car sales declined 9.0% to 609,290 units.
The overall SAAR for July 2016, calculated based on the number of selling days, was 17.88 million units.
The SAAR was 7.09 million units for passenger cars and 10.79 million units for trucks.
Among the Big 3, GM and Ford sales were down 1.9% and 3.0%, respectively, while FCA sales were up 1.5% compared to July sales last year.
Among Japanese companies, Nissan, Honda, and Subaru sales were up 1.2%, 4.4%, and 3.1%, respectively.
Toyota sales were down 1.4% from July last year.
Hyundai and Kia sales in July increased 5.6% and 6.5%, respectively.
Among German companies, Daimler sales increased 7.2% as BMW and VW sales decreased 5.0%, and 3.8%, respectively.
Volvo sales were up 52.8% and Jaguar Land Rover sales were up 51.5% in July.

U.S. light vehicle sales of 1,513,997 units in June 2016 were up 2.5% compared to the same month last year. Truck and SUV sales rose 11.4% from last year, to 891,329 units, while total passenger car sales declined 8.0% to 622,668 units. The overall SAAR for June 2016 was 16.66 million units. The SAAR was 6.76 million units for passenger cars and 9.90 million units for trucks. Cumulative sales in the first six months of 2016 of 8,645,016 units were up 1.5% from the same period one year ago. First half year sales of 3,644,370 cars were down 7.5%, while sales of 5,000,646 trucks and SUVs were up 9.2% from the same period last year. Among Detroit’s Big 3 in June, FCA was up 6.5% and Ford was up 6.4%, both on the strength of trucks and SUVs. GM sales were down 1.6%, with all segments affected. Among Japanese manufacturers, Honda and Nissan sales were up 3.2% and 13.1% respectively. Toyota sales were down 5.6% in June. Hyundai sales were flat, while Kia sales were up 15.6% compared to June 2015. Sales for the German companies were weaker, with BMW and VW selling 11.9% and 13.2% fewer vehicles than last June, respectively. Daimler sales were up 2.3% over last year. Volvo and Jaguar Land Rover sales increased 43.5% and 44.2% in June, respectively.

U.S. car sales drop 6% in May
As expected in a month with two less selling days than last year, U.S. light vehicle sales of 1,536,276 units in May 2016 were down 6.0% compared to the same month in 2015. Truck and SUV sales rose 2.3% from last year to 890,618 units, while total passenger car sales declined 15.6% to 645,658 units. The overall SAAR for May 2016, which is calculated based on the number of selling days, was a respectable 17.45 million units. The SAAR was 7.12 million units for passenger cars and 10.33 million units for trucks. Automakers with positive results compared to last May were FCA (up 1.1%), Hyundai and Kia (up 11.6% and 0.8% respectively), Volvo (up 10.2%), Subaru (up 1.1%), and Jaguar Land Rover (up 8.0%). Among the rest of Detroit’s Big 3 in May, Ford was down 6.1% and GM sales were down 18.0%. Among Japanese manufacturers, Toyota, Nissan, and Honda were down 9.6%, 1.0%, and 4.8% respectively. Sales for the German companies also dropped, with Daimler, BMW, and VW Group of America selling 1.9%, 8.7%, and 10.9% fewer vehicles than last May, respectively.

U.S. car sales up 3.6% in April
U.S. light vehicle sales of 1,506,977 units in April 2016 were up 3.6% compared to the same month last year.
In accordance with current trends, truck and SUV sales rose 11.2% from last year, to 877,141 units, while total passenger car sales declined 5.4% to 629,836 units.
The overall SAAR for April 2016 was 17.42 million units.
The SAAR was 7.06 million units for passenger cars, and reached 10.36 million units for trucks.
Among Detroit’s Big 3 in April, FCA was up 5.6% on the strength of trucks and SUVs, as passenger car sales declined 32.9% from last April.
Ford was up 3.6% on the strength of trucks as well, while GM sales were down 3.5% overall.
Among Japanese manufacturers, Honda and Nissan sales were up 14.4% and 12.8% respectively, with cars and trucks sharing the gains equally.
Toyota sales were up 3.8% in April, largely due to truck sale increases.
Hyundai sales were down 8.5% from April 2015, while Kia sales were up 6.1%.
Sales for the German companies were weaker, with BMW, VW, and Daimler selling 8.2%, 4.4%, and 0.4% fewer vehicles than last April, respectively.
Volvo sales increased 33.0% over last year, while Jaguar Land Rover sold 1.8% fewer vehicles than last April.

U.S. car sales up 3.2% in March
March 2016 was a good month for U.S. car sales, with SUVs and trucks selling especially well for the Big 3 American firms.
Total monthly U.S. sales were 1,595,483 units, up 3.2% from March 2015.
Truck and SUV sales of 908,024 units rose 11.4% from last year, while total passenger car sales declined 5.9% to 687,459 units.
The SAAR for March 2016 was 16.57 million units.
The SAAR was 6.91 million units for passenger cars, and 9.66 million units for trucks.
Among Detroit's Big 3, FCA was up 8.1%, Ford was up 7.8%, and GM was up 0.9% over last March, with passenger cars sales declining as light trucks gained.
Nissan sales were up 12.7% and Honda sales were up 9.4%, while Toyota's sales slid 2.7% from last March.
Hyundai sales were up 0.4% from March 2016, while Kia sales were down 0.8%.
Sales for the German companies all fell, with BMW, VW, and Daimler selling 13.3%, 4.1%, and 3.6% fewer vehicles than last March, respectively.
Volvo sales increased 15.9% over last year, while Jaguar Land Rover sold 28.8% more vehicles than last March.

February 2016 was a very good month for car sales in the U.S., especially for SUVs and trucks. Total monthly U.S. sales were 1,344,225 units, up 6.9% from February 2015.
Truck and SUV sales of 771,827 units rose 12.8% from last year, while total passenger car sales declined 0.2% to 572,398 units. The SAAR for February 2016 was 17.54 million units. The SAAR was 7.39 million units for passenger cars, and 10.16 million units for trucks.
Among Detroit’s Big 3, Ford was up 20.2%, with both car and truck sales up approximately the same. FCA sales were up 11.8% this February, with cars falling by the same percentage that trucks were increasing. GM was down 1.5%.
Japanese companies did well, with Honda sales up 12.8%, Nissan up 10.5%, Toyota up 4.1%, and Subaru up 1.6% compared to February 2015.
Hyundai sales were up 1.0% from last February, while Kia sales were up 13.0% on the strength of SUVs.
Among the German companies, BMW was down 12.3%, VW was down 8.7%, and Daimler was down 0.5% from last year. Volvo sales increased 31.1% over last year, while Jaguar Land Rover sold 25.3% more vehicles than last February.

US car sales for January show mixed result
The first month of 2016 showed a mixed result of monthly sales for automakers, as dealers faced winter storms across the country and two less selling days in January than last year. Total monthly U.S. sales were 1,148,057 units, down 0.3% from January 2015. Trucks and SUV sales of 661,812 units rose 6.5% above last year, as total passenger car sales declined 8.2% to 486,245 units.
The SAAR for January 2016 was 17.58 million units. Total passenger car SAAR was 7.43 million units. SAAR for trucks was 10.15 million.
Among Detroit's Big 3, FCA beat estimates with sales up 6.9% this January, GM was up 0.5%, but Ford was down 2.8% even with strong SUV sales.
Japanese companies did not fare much better, with Toyota sales down 4.7%, Honda sales down 1.7%, and Mazda down 2.8% compared to January 2015. However, Nissan was up 1.6% and Subaru was up 0.7%.
Hyundai sales were up 1.1% from last January, although Kia sales were flat at 0.0%.
Among the German companies, BMW was down 4.0%, while Daimler was up 1.3% from last year. Volkswagen Group sales were down 9.2%, with the VW brand down 14.6% from last January’s sales. Volvo enjoyed a January increase of 11.9% over last year, while Jaguar Land Rover sold 7.0% more vehicles than last year.
