Executive Summary

As a result of various governments' initiatives to stimulate auto demand, sales of new vehicles in Japan, the US, and five European countries (the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain) have started to grow again. Yet, major changes have occurred in the makeup (segments) of vehicles being sold since many of the stimulus packages include incentives for consumers to purchase more eco-friendly vehicles. As a result, sales of Mini, Small, and Lower Medium vehicles have increased while sales of vehicles in other segments have declined.

In the above mentioned seven countries, Japanese auto manufacturers increased their combined sales of new vehicles in the Mini, Small, and Lower Medium (compact car) segments by 6.4 points from 38.2% in 2007 to 44.6% in the January-October period of 2009.

In line with the change occurring in the types of vehicles being sold, we noted that there was an increasing number of Japanese-brand light vehicles (with engine displacements of 1.5L or less) being sold. Their number rose 5.0 points from 32.6% in 2007 to 37.7% in the January-September period of 2009. On the other hand, the percentage of vehicles with engine displacements of 2.6L and larger declined 7.0 points from 24.6% to 17.6%. The average displacement fell from 2.22L (in 2007) to 2.04L.

The percentage of HEV sales in Japan grew to 7.4%; while the percentage of sales of diesel-powered vehicles in Europe plunged

Looking at sales of Japanese-brand light vehicles based on fuel type, we noted that sales of hybrid vehicles (HEVs) in Japan are rapidly growing.

In Europe, we found that the percentage of sales of diesel-powered vehicles has plummeted, from 45.1% in 2007 to 33.6% in 2009; while the percentage of sales of gasoline-powered vehicles, especially those of vehicles with smaller engine displacement sizes, has soared from 52.5% to 62.3%, reflecting the overall market situation in general in Europe. The percentage of sales of LPG vehicles is increasing, partly because the Italian government gave subsidies to consumers who replaced their older vehicles with LPG-driven ones.
