Executive Summary

As a result of various governments' initiatives to stimulate auto demand, sales of new vehicles in Japan, the US, and five European countries (the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain) have started to grow again. This is since they started declining in autumn 2008. Yet, major changes have occurred in the breakdown of vehicles that make up the automotive market. Many of the stimulus packages include incentives for consumers who purchase eco-friendly vehicles with outstanding environmental performance. As a result, the numbers of Mini, Small, and Lower Medium vehicles have increased while those of vehicles in other segments have declined. As of the January-September period of 2009, the combined percentage of compact cars in three segments increased 9.3 points compared to what the percentage was in 2007, from 33.5% to 42.8%.

In line with the change occurring among the vehicle segments, we also noted that there were increasing numbers of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles with engine displacements of 1.5L or less. The number rose 8.9 points, from 23.5% in 2007 to 32.4% in the January-September period of 2009. (HEVs were not included.)

In the sector of gasoline engine vehicles alone, the percentage of those with engine displacements of 1.5L and under was up 10.7 points, from 24.6% to 35.3%. In addition, the percentage in Japan rose 8.1 points, to 63.2% to 71.3%. And, in the five European countries, the percentage grew an even greater number of points, by 12.4, from 57.9% to 70.3%. In the USA, the percentage of vehicles with engine displacements of 2.5L and under also grew, rising by 13.0 points (from 37.0% to 50.0%).

In addition, when we compared vehicles by fuel type, we found that the ratio of HEVs in Japan and the ratio of E85 flex-fuel vehicles in the USA were rising. In Europe, the percentage of diesel-powered vehicles is declining while that of gasoline-powered vehicles with smaller engines is increasing.

■HEVs in Japan, E85 vehicles in the USA, and smaller engine gasoline-powered vehicles in Europe are increasing

When we looked into vehicles by fuel types, we noted that the number of HEVs in Japan and E85 flex-fuel vehicles in the USA surged. In Europe, we found that the overall percentage of diesel-powered vehicles is declining while that of smaller engine gasoline-powered vehicles is increasing. In Italy, where the government introduced a purchase subsidy to consumers who replace vehicles, the ratio of CNG and LPG vehicles has been increasing.

■The average engine displacement size of gasoline-powered vehicles is decreasing: 1.37L in Japan, 1.43L in Europe, and 3.04L in the USA in 2009

When we compared the average engine displacement size of gasoline-powered vehicles in 2009 with the average in 2007, we noticed that it decreased. In Japan, in spite of a decrease in the percentage of mini vehicles, it dropped from 1.49L to 1.37L. In Europe it also fell, from 1.54L to 1.43L; and in the USA it dropped from 3.36L to 3.04L.

The average engine displacement of diesel-powered vehicles, which account for most of the sales in Europe, declined from 1.92L to 1.86L. The average engine displacement size of E85 vehicles, of which sales in the USA are soaring, has not changed much. It currently is 4.56L in 2009.

The average engine displacement size of HEVs is decreasing in Japan. In the USA, on the other hand, it is increasing. The combined average in Japan, the US, and Europe has not changed much, as it is slightly less than 2.0L.

2. The seven countries are Japan, the US, the UK, Germany, France, Italy, and Spain.
Figures given for 2009 for Japan and Germany cover the January through August period, and for the other five countries cover January through September.
3. Figures are based on the sales volume of each engine displacement size in increments of 100ccs: "1.0L" represents 0.95L or more but less than 1.05L. "1.1L" represents 1.05L or more but less than 1.15L.
4. Except for Japan, the figures include some medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles.

■The percentage of gasoline-powered vehicles with engine displacements of 2.5L and under is 97% in both Japan and Europe, and 50% in the US

The ratio of both gasoline-powered and diesel-powered vehicles having engine displacements of 1.5L and under increased from 23.5% (2007) to 32.4% (January-September 2009). The percentage of vehicles having engine displacements of 2.5L and under amounted to 77.7%. (The percentage was 67.1% in 2007.) The individual percentages were 73.0% for gasoline-powered vehicles and 90.9% for diesel-powered vehicles. The percentage of gasoline-powered vehicles with engine displacements of 2.5L and under is 96.8% in Japan and 97.6% in Europe; while in the USA, where it was 37.0% in 2007, it was 50% in 2009.
