The following is a summary of new technologies and equipment adopted on new passenger car models launched to domestic market by Japanese carmakers in 2006. The new passenger cars counted 31 models composed of newly introduced models and fully changed models (including OEM models). Toyota and Daihatsu brought 16 models out of them. And 11 models were mini-cars.
Toyota introduced a number of high level safety and driving assist technologies with the LS460, the flagship of the Lexus brand. And also it equipped the Corolla Axio of Toyota brand with many advanced technologies.
Nissan adopted the 4-wheel active steering control and the intelligent cruise control with a tracking function at a low speed on the new Skyline. Honda equipped all glades of the new CR-V with VSA and DBW (Drive by wire) which improve driving stability as standard.
The adoption of cutting edge technologies is prevailing even within mini-cars. Daihatsu installed the Move Custom with pre-crash safety and the lane deviation warning function. Suzuki provided the Cervo with the keyless start system as standard and the Bluetooth compatible hands-free system as standard for some grades.
As for the power train, the technologies which combined driving performance with environmental performance were adopted. The LS460 was installed with the Dual VVT-i engine and the world's first eight-speed AT. The Skyline of Nissan was provided with the new FR exclusive V6 engine which adopted the electromagnetic VTC on the exhaust valves. Honda provided the engine for the Stream with the variable intake air volume control system.
■Toyota: The Lexus GS450h and LS460 came up with various cutting-edge technologies.
Toyota introduced the GS450h of Lexus brand which was the world's first FR passenger car base hybrid vehicle in March 2006 and the LS460 which was the flagship of the Lexus brand in September.
The GS450h was installed with a V6 3500cc gasoline engine, but attracted market attention with the power performance of the hybrid system which was comparable to a 4500cc vehicle and the fuel economy of 2000cc class vehicle (14.2km/L on Japanese 10-15 mode test).
The LS460 was provided with a newly developed V8 4600cc Dual VVT-i gasoline engine (the intake-valve timing mechanism exploited the world's first electric motor driven type) and the world's first eight-speed AT, thus combining excellent starting and acceleration performance with low fuel consumption and quiet operation.
The LS460 was installed with a number of safety features, driving assist and comfort equipment (for riding comfort) including many of the world's firsts. The optional pre-crash safety system was provided with new functions like 1) a driver monitor (also installed on the GS450h), 2) greatly improved pedestrian detection ability by a fusion of the new millimeter-wave radar and newly developed stereo camera technologies, 3) an addition of the assist function during driver's accident avoidance steering operation and 4) the world's first rear end pre-crash safety system.
The LS460 was also provided as optional with driving assist systems like the radar cruise control which enabled the tracking run at all speeds and the intelligent parking assist (with ultra-sonic sensor) which eliminated the necessity of position correction.

| (Note) 1. |
V8 4608cc D-4S (Direct injection 4 stroke gasoline engine Superior version engine which exploits both cylinder-direct injection and port-injection. It adopts the world's first continuously electric-motor-driven VVT-iE(Variable Valve Timing-intelligent by Electric motor) mechanism on the intake side of the Dual VVT-i. |
| 2. |
GS450h is installed with the world's first FR passenger exclusive hybrid system with V6 3500cc gasoline engine to realize power performance which is comparable to a 4500cc-engined car and low fuel consumption (14.2km/L on Japanese 10-15 mode exhaust emission test) of a 2000cc-engined car. |
| 3. |
Variable Gear Ratio Steering: The ratio between the steering wheel turned angle and front wheel steer angle is optimally set according to the vehicle speed to give a feeling of stabilized steering. |
| 4. |
System to control the stabilizer by electric motors. Using a quick response of electric motors, it controls the front and rear stabilizers optimally to minimize the body roll, thus improving tire road holding capability. |
| 5. |
NAVI AI-AVS: Based on the road information from navigation and learned road-bump information, it controls the damping force of the shock absorbers optimally to improve the maneuverability and driving stability. |
| 6. |
It adequately controls the damping force of the shock absorbers to absorb the vibration from ground smoothly. |
| 7. |
It totally controls the power(driving force)/steering/brake to stabilize the vehicle attitude and to realize ideal vehicle maneuverability, thus assuring highly protective safety. |
| 8. |
The following functions are added to conventional pre-crash safety systems: (1) The driver's face direction is monitored by a driver monitoring system, and if the driver is not facing ahead, it alarms to tell that an obstacle in front is approaching; (2) In addition to the conventional millimeter-wave radar, a stereo camera which recognized the size of and distance to an obstacle and the near infrared rays are used to enhance the night view ability, thus the pedestrian detection capability which used to be difficult to attain has been greatly improved; (3) When the driver is aware of the danger and operates the steering wheel to evade an accident, the system supports the evasive action to stabilize the vehicle attitude coordinating an integrated control of steering, brake, etc. |
| 9. |
The exclusive millimeter-wave radar placed within the rear bumper works to detect an approaching vehicle from behind, and if the system determines a possibility of rear end collision, it flashes the hazard lights to warn the driver of rear vehicle. Prior to the collision, the pre-crash intelligent head restraints are shifted to the adequate position to reduce the whiplash injury. |
| 10. |
ECB (Electronically Controlled Brake System): A sensor detects the operated amount of the brake pedal and controls the hydraulic pressure for each of four wheels to apply the optimal brake force. |
| 11. |
When it is required to repeat starting and stopping, such as in a traffic jam, the electronic brake control can be set to hold the brake force at four wheels and prevents a creeping with an occasional brake pedal depression. It is released once the accelerator is pressed. |
| 12. |
It activates by a switch during parking. While "AUTO" mode is selected, if the shift lever is set at (or moved to) the parking (P) position, the system functions to apply (or release) the parking brake automatically (the world's first according to Toyota's material). |
| 13. |
Detecting a preceding car by the millimeter wave radar, if the system determines braking is necessary according to the distance and relative speed between two vehicles, it smoothly engages the brake unless the driver is stepping on the accelerator pedal. Set with the pre-crash safety as optional. |
| 14. |
On highways or motorways, the system functions to track the vehicle ahead keeping an adequate distance at all speeds of 0 to 100km/h including up to full stop. After a stop, if the system detects the preceding vehicle's starting, the tracking is resumed by operating the switch or accelerator. |
| 15. |
Parking can be done without steering operation but only with braking. Combing the parking space detection by ultra sonic sensor with recognition of parking lines by image processing, the system parks without any position correction in most cases. |
| 16. |
Telematics service exclusively for Lexus models. If the system detects an intrusion into the car, it notifies the owner by e-mail and phone call, and upon the request it locates and tracks the stolen vehicle and also dispatches security guards to the site. Free of charge for 3 years after the purchase of the car. |
■The Corolla Axio of Toyota brand was also provided with various advanced technologies

| (Note) 1. |
The Altis released by Daihatsu in January 2006 was Toyota's OEM based on the Camry. |
| 2. |
The Coo released in May 2006 by Daihatsu was a sister model of the bB released by Toyota in December 2005, but the exterior and interior were greatly changed. Both the bB/Coo models are produced in the Daihatsu head quarter's Ikeda plant. |
| 3. |
It adopted the industry's first input-speed reduction type three-shaft gear train mechanism. A reduction gear is placed on the prior stage of the continuous speed change to reduce the belt speed by 30% (and reverse the revolution), thus improving the driving power transmission efficiency. The speed reduction and reversing revolution which used to be necessary after the changing speed process with conventional CVT was eliminated and four-shaft mechanism was converted to three-shaft. |
| 4. |
The Bego makes use of the system on 4WD models as optional. Among them the AT version adopts the VSC with Down-hill Assist Control function and the Hill-start Assist Control function as optional. |
| 5. |
During a medium- to low-speed rear end collision, utilizing the occupant body's force pressing against the seat back the system moves head restraint forward to reduce the movement of head, thus moderates the impact to the neck. |
| 6. |
The Radar cruise control, pre-crash safety system, lane deviation warning function, VSC, reverse linked door mirror, side airbags (driver and passenger), curtain shield airbags (front and rear) and Dynamic support head restraints (front) are adopted as a set.
The pre-crash safety system adopted on the Move Custom exploits the world's first (according to Daihatsu's material) sensor fusion technology which combines the laser radar's excellent distance measuring capability with the image processing which is advantageous in pattern recognition to improve the capability to recognize preceding vehicles. |
| 7. |
It includes the driver seat lifter, tilt steering and adjustable shoulder belt anchor as a set option. |
| 8. |
It displays the time, average fuel consumption, instantaneous fuel consumption, possible driving range, outside temperature, altitude, etc. |
■Nissan: The new Skyline was equipped with the four wheel active steering and the new FR exclusive V6 engine.
Nissan released the new Skyline sedan in November 2006 (the new Skyline coupe is planned to be launched in the autumn of 2007). The Moco is OEM based on the Suzuki MR Wagon, and also the Otti is OEM based on the Mitsubishi eK wagon. |
| 2. |
The FR exclusive new V6 engine of which basic dimensions and major parts like the cylinder block were redesigned. The engine performs better fuel consumption than a conventional V6 VQ engine by 10% and achieves the exhaust emission of SU-LEV. The continuous variable timing is applied for both intake and exhaust valves and the electro-magnetic VTC (Valve Timing Control) is introduced on the exhaust side. The friction is thoroughly reduced by such as DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coating and PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) treatment on valve lifters and piston rings. |
| 3. |
Nissan equipped the Fuga released in October 2004 with rear active steering which steers rear wheels. On the new Skyline, it was combined with the front wheel active steering which controls the relationship between the angle of the steering wheel and the angle of the front road wheels optimally. The rear wheels operate only in the same phase of angle with that of steering wheel. The system realizes steering response exactly to expectations at low and medium speeds and stabilized and smooth one at a high speed. |
| 4. |
The adjustment of the position of steering wheel/driver seat/door mirrors is linked with the intelligent key. |
| 5. |
The conventional intelligent cruise control functions at a speed range of 40 to 100km/h. The one with the low speed tracking function works even at a speed range of 10 to 40km/h keeping an adequate distance from the preceding vehicle according to the vehicle speed. |
| 6. |
The damping characteristic is adjusted to perform optimally at any driving scene, e.g. during cornering, the damping force for front inside wheel is increased to restrain a roll behavior, and if large force is input from a road, increase the damping force for the rear suspension which has a long stroke, to control the variation of road contact force. |
■Honda: The new CR-V adopts VSA/DBW as standard and the new Stream performs low fuel consumption of 14.8km/L.
Honda equipped the Stream released in July 2006 and the CR-V released in October with the VSA (Vehicle stability assist), IHCC (Intelligent Highway Cruise Control) which reduce the workload of a driver by controlling the speed/distance, collision mitigating brake + E-Pretensioner, etc.
The new CR-V was installed with VSA and DBW (Drive by wire) as standard for all grades to improve driving stability.
The 1800cc/2000cc engine of the Stream adopts the variable intake air volume control system and the both X grade and G grade (former is with 1800cc engine and 5-speed AT and latter is with 2000cc engine and CVT) attained the low fuel consumption of 14.8km/L.

| (Note) 1. |
The evolution from conventional Honda VTEC includes delaying the closing timing of intake-valves at low load driving and at the same time optimally controlling the throttle valve with the DBW to reduce the pumping loss during an air intake stroke significantly. The fuel consumption with 1800cc engine (5-speed AT, X grade) and 2000cc engine (CVT, G grade) is 14.8km/L. |
| 2. |
It is installed under the passenger side door mirror and displays the image of under the body side to the front field. It replaces a conventional side-under mirror mounted on the fender, and gives a neater exterior styling. |
| 3. |
Intelligent Highway Cruise Control: The system controls the speed and distance from vehicles ahead to reduce the workload of a driver. If the lane is clear ahead, it keeps a set speed, and if not, the millimeter-wave radar measures the distance from preceding vehicles and automatically adjusts the speed and distance. |
■Mazda/Mitsubishi/Suzuki/Fuji Heavy Industries: New equipment in the new passenger cars launched to domestic market in 2006
Mazda adopted the new MPV released in February 2006 and the CX-7 launched in December with the pre-crash safety system and radar cruise control, and equipped discharge headlamps as standard.
Mitsubishi adopted the mid-ship layout on the i mini-car introduced in January 2006, and the Active Stability & Traction Control on the new Pajero launched in Octorber.
Suzuki provided the Cervo released in November 2006 with the keyless-start system as standard and the Bluetooth compatible hands-free system as standard for some grades.

| (Note) 1. |
The MPV (FF model) enjoys an engine maximum power of 180kW (245PS), maximum torque of 350Nm and fuel consumption of 10.2km/L on Japanese 10-15 mode test. |
| 2. |
The platform has the engine installed at the rear portion of the body but in front of the rear axle. The largely lengthened wheelbase (WB=2550mm) and favorable front and rear weight distribution realizes excellent driving stability and high-quality riding comfort. |
| 3. |
The view from the passenger side door mirror and rearview images are monitored on a navigation display to assist parking. The CX-7 adopted it with an HDD navigation system as standard for all grades. |
| 4. |
It is installed on the second-row seat of the MPV. With an ottoman, seat cushion angle adjusting mechanism, the large size head restraint with a swing function, etc., it reduces the strain of muscles and helps a good blood circulation to attain the first class comfort (according to Mazda material). |
| 5. |
If the passenger seat back is tilted forward fully, the back surface can be used as a table. |
| 6. |
If the door was opened by other methods than keyless entry, after 10 seconds the horn starts to blow intermittently and a designated mobile phone receives the notice. |
