New Equipment on European New Passenger Car Models:
Extended Adoption of Parking Assist System and AFS

Active head restraints now prevail as standard equipment,
while ACC adoption is limited for high end cars.

Introduced below is a summary of major equipment featured in new passenger car models launched by European carmakers to European markets in and after 2005 (Some are planned to be released in autumn 2006).

The remarkable adoption of new functional equipment in the driving support area is the Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) which follows a vehicle ahead even at a low speed and sounds an alarm to the driver when a collision seems apparent, and if necessary, prepares for emergency braking. DaimlerCrysler (DCX) will introduce it on the S-Class and CL-Class which will be released in autumn 2006. And also the Audi A6 and Q7 of VW, the 3 Series of BMW, the Range Rover Sport and the Jaguar XK of Ford, respectively, introduced it as an option or standard on some grades of models.

In the area of visibility, the adoption of the Adaptive Lights (AFS: Adaptive Front Lighting System) which swivel the light beams toward the way the car is heading, has expanded to the Citroen C6 of PSA and the Range Rover Sport of Ford as standard equipment.

In the collision safety area, the Active Head Restraints which protect occupants' necks during a rear-end collision have been equipped as standard on plural models of DCX and VW, and also on some models of PSA, Renault and GM.

In the area of parking assist, the Parking Sensors which prevent the hitting of obstacles have widely been adopted on some grades of models as standard or option.

DaimlerChrysler (DCX) equipped the new S-Class released in September 2005, with the second generation system of the Pre-Safe safety concept (initially announced in 2002), which predicts a potential accident and prepares for the occupant protection before the collision. The system will also be installed on the new CL-Class which is planned to be released this autumn.

The Second Generation collision safety equipment includes newly added features such as re-positioning seats to keep the right posture of occupants, reforming seat contours to protect occupants, closing side windows to prevent occupants' being ejected, and so on. The Active Head Restraints for rear seats are also equipped as standard.

Night Vision that is a viewing device during night and the ACC are available on the new S-Class as an option.

(Notes) 1. The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) is an alternative European naming for the Electronic Stability Control (ESC).
2. According to the motion of the vehicle body at starting or cornering, the system controls instantly the hydraulic units installed within each of four suspension coil springs electronically.
3. Detecting the reduced inflation pressure of any tire, the system sounds an alarm.
4. Detecting the reduced inflation pressure of any tire, the system indicates a warning in the display on board.
5. At a hill start, the system prevents unnecessary roll back while a driver lifts his or her foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal.
It also has a function to keep the car standing still during stopping at a traffic signal for example, without the driver having to press the brake pedal.
6. The cruise control functions were enhanced, and the name for the system was thus changed from the Distronic to the Distronic plus.
The system supports the speed range from standing still to 200km/h, and also supports sequential changes of driving conditions such as running → stopping → restarting → accelerating.
7. During night driving, the system supports the safe recognition of objects ahead, detecting them by an infrared viewing system and displaying their images.
The head lights with infrared filters beam up to 150m ahead of the vehicle, the reflection is then viewed by an infrared camera behind the wind shield, and the image is shown on the display located in the gauge panel.
8. According to the steering angle and the car speed, the beam-axes of the head lights swivel up to 12 degrees to the right or left, thus, illuminating the actual direction which the vehicle is running.
9. The system has five functions including, country road mode which assists earlier recognition of obstacles or pedestrians by widening the visibility of the driver at least 10m, and the motorway mode which increases beaming power from 35 watts to 38 watts at speeds of 90km/h or more.
10. If an accident or collision cannot be avoided, the system changes the shape of the side-support of the seats, keeping the clearance between the occupants and doors at a good distance, and it thus increases the efficiency of side airbags.
11. If an accident or collision cannot be avoided, the system automatically adjusts the passenger seat back and cushion and the rear seats to a suitable position.
12. If an accident or collision can not be avoided, the system closes the side windows automatically to prevent occupants' being ejected out.
13. If a dangerous condition is sensed from the break assist sensor, the system retracts the seat-belts for the driver and the passenger to hold them before the collision.
14. If the vehicle starts to drift, the system closes the sun-roof automatically.
15. Upon a rear-end collision, if the impact exceeds a certain level, the system moves head-restraints forward and upward instantly, to prevent the occupants' heads from suffering rear whiplash, and thus reducing the impact given to their necks.
16. It can be activated by pushing a button. And it is automatically released at starting.
17. The system detects obstacles around the front and rear bumpers by ultrasonic sensors, and supports the driver's operation by informing the driver of the approaching conditions by indicators and an alarm.
18. Shifting the gear to reverse, the system automatically displays the rearward view on a front display (in a monochrome image).
19. Various informational functions including navigation are easily set by a dial type controller located in front of the arm-rests
20. The system instantly respond to the driver's accelerator operations and manual tip-shift operations.
To accelerate sharply, it kicks down from the seventh to the fifth gear directly, for example.

(Notes) 1. Four functions, such as the Hill Start Assistant which applies brake to prevent rollback at a hill start of a manual transmission car, are added on the Dynamic Stability Control.
2. Using an electronically controlled center coupling, the system controls the delivery of driving forces between the front and rear wheels instantly.
3. At the application of the brakes while cornering, the system automatically controls the brake fluid pressure on each wheel to prevent the car's swerving from the lane.
4. The sub-system of the Dynamic Stability Control: Detecting road wheel spin or reduced traction, the system retrieves the wheel grips controlling each wheel by braking.
5. While descending a steep path or snowy road, the system enables a safe and sure drive controlling brakes automatically.
6. Using millimeter-wave radar, the system keeps a set distance from the vehicle ahead. When detecting a slower vehicle ahead in the same lane, it reduces the speed, and if the lane becomes clear, it accelerates up to the set speed automatically.
7. While descending down hill, the system automatically applies the brakes to maintain a set speed.
If the driver set the speed lower, the system decelerates the car up to the speed by applying the brakes.
8. Detecting the motion to pass a curve and the speed of the car, the headlights swivel horizontally to beam toward the cornering direction up to 15°.
9. During a side collision, it prevents a head impact against side windows. Also it protects the occupants' heads against intruding objects from outside.

(Notes) 1. At high speed cornering, if either side wheel lifts, the automatic brake system activates to keep the car stable.
2. The system automatically inhibits any exceeding of the speed set by the cruise control.
3. The system controls the speed according to the distance from the vehicle ahead, and, as necessary, warns the driver for braking or activates the brake automatically.
4. The weight sensors built in seats etc. accurately detect the front seats occupants' conditions such as existence/locations/frames, to control the deployment level of the airbags adequately during a frontal collision.
5. The ultrasonic sensors on the front and rear bumpers warn the driver with a sound at the detection of obstacles, and display the location of the obstacles in the touch screen on a center console.
6. If the rear bumper approaches obstacles, it sounds an alarm.
