Outline of Exhibition by Six Japanese Auto Manufacturers
Centered on models produced in China, Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi Motors, and Suzuki exhibited a large number of products

  The 11th Shanghai Motor Show (The 11th International Automobile & Manufacturing Technology Exhibition: Shanghai Auto 2005) was held at Shanghai New International Expo Center in Pudong New Area, Shanghai between April 22 and 28, 2005. The exhibition area was 120,000 square meters with 1,036 companies from 26 countries/regions participating.

  The Shanghai Auto 2005 was also considered to be an exhibition that showed the result of New Auto Policy announced in June 2004, in which the Chinese government made clear its policy to place emphasis on a capability for independent development. Thirteen Chinese auto manufacturers including automakers in the China FAW Group and Geely Holding Group as well as Chery Automobile exhibited their proprietary concept cars. Major overseas auto manufacturers displayed numerous concept cars and their latest models that they do not plan to introduce into China in the immediate future.

  Moreover, numerous new technologies were exhibited, mainly by overseas major automakers. For example, with respect to a fuel cell vehicle, Nissan exhibited X-TRAIL FCV, Honda exhibited FCX, GM Sequel FCV, and DaimlerChrysler (DCX) B-class Fuel Cell.

  Among hybrid vehicles, Toyota displayed the Prius, which it plans to begin production in China in 2005, Honda displayed Accord Hybrid and Civic Hybrid (also set an introduction corner for its hybrid technology), and DCX displayed S-class Hybrid. BYD Auto, which is under the umbrella of China's major storage battery maker BYD Group, also exhibited an electric concept car - ET.

  In addition, for import/sales in China, numerous high-end brand vehicles worldwide were exhibited and major auto manufacturers that make local production in China made a presentation to prepare for an increase in the number of models imported/sold in China in preparation for reduction of tariffs on imported vehicles in 2006, which China promised when were to join the WTO.

  The following report is an outline of the exhibition by six Japanese auto manufacturers - Toyota, Nissan, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi Motors, and Suzuki. All six automakers exhibited more than 10 models centered on their models produced and to be produced in China, and ones to be imported, including a concept car.

■Recent trends of six Japanese auto manufacturers' Chinese business

Toyota	In Jan. 2005, Guangqi Toyota Engine, which is Toyota's Guangzhou engine plant, started production of engine components such as cam shafts and crank shafts. The company will begin producing the 2.4L AZ engine in the autumn of 2005 with a planned annual production volume of 25,000 in 2005. Guangqi Toyota Engine plans to export all engines and engine components that it manufactures to Japan for some time.
	In Mar. 2005, six exclusive dealers for the Lexus brand which were established in Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, and Guangzhou opened, releasing the GS430/GS300 sports model. The number of dealers is planned to increase to 14 in 2005 and to 90 by 2008 with the aim of selling 50,000 a year between 2008 and 2010.
	In Mar. 2005, Tianjin FAW Toyota Motor's Tianjing second passenger car plant began production of the Crown.
	In Apr. 2005, the company announced that it would launch the Lexus LX470 in the latter half of 2005.
	At the Shanghai Auto Show 2005, the company introduced the Prius, a hybrid vehicle that it plans to produce in China (production will begin at Changchun FAW Fengyue Automobile in the autumn of 2005), the Reiz (Japanese name: Mark X which it will start production at the second plant of Tianjin FAW Toyota Motor around Oct. 2005), and the Camry (production will begin at Guangzhou Toyota Motor in the summer of 2006).
Nissan	On Apr. 19, 2005, the company introduced five models that it would launch in the Chinese market by 2007 - the Tiida sedan, the Tiida hatchback, the Fuga, the Quest, and the 350Z (Fairlady). Among them, production of the Tiida sedan began in Apr. 2005. Production of the Fuga and the Tiida hatchback is planned to start in Jun. and in the autumn of 2005, respectively. In addition, the company plans to import/sell two new models in 2005.
	The company plans to sell 140,000 and 300,000 passenger cars in China in 2005 and 2007, respectively.
Honda	In Feb. 2005, Guangzhou Honda Automobile fully remodeled Odyssey.
	In Apr. 2005, Dongfeng Honda Automobile released the new CR-V (2.0L/2.4L).
	In Apr. 2005, Honda's Chinese plant exclusively for export, whose construction was completed at the end of 2004, started operations.
	Dongfeng Honda Automobile plans to start producing Civic in 2006.
Mazda	In Jan. 2005, the company founded a regional headquarters for its Chinese business in Shanghai, thus strengthening its management system for the Chinese business.
	In Mar. 2005, the company, as a three-way joint venture with China FAW Group and FAW Car, established FAW Mazda Automotive Sales Co., Ltd., a sales company that deal with all models that Mazda manufactures in China to enhance its sales system in China.
	On Apr. 2005, the company announced a plan to locally produce the Mazda 6 (Japanese name: Atenza. Production models in China are a sport wagon and a Sport 5 door) and the Tribute SUV, and to import/sell the RX-8.   Though the time to release the Tribute is unknown, production of the Mazda 6 will begin at FAW Car in the first half of 2006. The RX-8 will be released within one year from now. Including the four models, the company will introduce a total of eight models within the next three years, aiming to sell 100,000 in 2005 and 300,000 in 2010.
Mitsubishi	Under the management rebuilding plan announced in Jan. 2005, the company revealed its policy to actively develop the Mitsubishi brand in China.
	In Mar. 2005, Hunan Changfeng Motor started production of the Pajero GLS 3.8L with a plan to release the model under the Mitsubishi brand.
Suzuki	In Oct. 2004, Jiangxi Changhe Automobile announced that it would jointly build a new passenger car plant with Suzuki. The investment is worth 800 million RMB. The company plans an annual production volume of 100,000 at the first stage construction and eventually 300,000.
	At the Shanghai Auto 2005, Chongqing Changan Suzuki Automobile announced that its annual production capacity had increased to 200,000 as the expansion of its plant was completed. The company plans to introduce at least one new model from Suzuki a year by 2008 to prepare a model line for SUV and 1.3/1.6/1.8L vehicles. It will also introduce a production line for 1.6/1.8L engine with a plan to start operations in 2006.
	In Apr. 2005, the company announced that it would start manufacturing a new engine - the K14B (maximum power of 67kw, 1372cc, DOHC aluminum engine) - at Jiangxi Changhe Suzuki Automobile in Jun. 2005. The engine will be used for a new model that will be produced at its two joint venture plants in China.
	The company plans to begin production of Liana hatchback/sedan at Jiangxi Changhe Suzuki Automobile in Sep. 2005.
	The company plans to start producing the Swift, a 5-seat sports hatchback, at Chongqing Changan Suzuki Automobile's Chongqing plant in 2005.

■Toyota exhibited its models to be produced in China and Lexus brand models that it steps up import/sales

  Toyota exhibited 23 models including a concept car. Daihatsu did not make a presentation, but China FAW Group exhibited the Terios, which FAW Huali (Tianjin) produces on consignment from Daihatsu.

■Prius, Reiz, and Camry, all of which Toyota plans to produce in China, were exhibited

Prius: First hybrid model in China. The company plans to produce 2,000 to 3,000 a year at Changchun FAW Fengyue Automobile starting in the autumn of 2005.

The Prius: Planned to be produced 2,000 to 3,000 a year starting in the autumn of 2005.

■Crown: Production started at Tianjin FAW Toyota Motor's second plant in Mar. 2005. The model uses a 3000cc V6 engine and a 6-speed AT (6 Super ECT).

■Reiz: The model was introduced in China for the first time; its Japanese name is Mark X. Production is planned to begin at Tianjin FAW Toyota Motor's second plant in about October 2005. It uses a 3.0/2.5L V6 engine and a 6-speed AT and is equipped with sunroof, ABS, EBD, TRC, VSC, side SRS airbag, curtain SRS airbag, etc.

The Reiz: Production is scheduled to begin at Tianjin FAW Toyota Motor in the autumn of 2005.

■Camry: The model is to be produced at Guangzhou Toyota Motor starting in the summer of 2006. The initial production is planned to be 170,000 a year. The model uses a 2.4L AZ engine.

The Camry: Production is scheduled to start at Guangzhou Toyota Motor in the summer of 2006.

■Six models of Lexus brand, which Toyota stepped up selling in Mar. 2005, were exhibited

  Toyota also displayed six Lexus brand models which it started selling at its six exclusive dealers in March 2005.

The number of exclusive dealers for Lexus brand will be increased to 14 in 2005 and to 90 by 2008 with a sales target of 50,000 a year between 2008 and 2010.

The GS430: Import/sales began in Mar. 2005.

  In addition, Toyota exhibited its models manufactured in China - Vios/Corolla (produced at Tianjin FAW Toyota Motor), Land Cruiser 100 (produced at Changchun FAW Fengyue Automobile), and Land Cruiser Prade (produced at Sichuan Toyota) as well as Daihatsu brand model - Terios (produced at FAW Huali (Tianjin). The company also displayed RAV4 SUV, Previa MPV, new Hiace van, F1 racing car, i-unit Concept - a single-seat future concept vehicle also exhibited at the he 2005 World Exposition, Aichi, Japan - an engine to be used for the Crown.

■Nissan exhibited Tiida, Fuga, Quest, and 350Z, which it will introduce in 2005

  Nissan exhibited 14 models including five models to be newly introduced in 2005 as well as a fuel cell vehicle X-TRAIL FCV and a concept car.

■Five new models including models to be manufactured in China were exhibited

■Tiida (sedan): Produced in China, released in April 2005. The Chinese name is Yida. The model uses a 1.6L aluminum engine. The selling price is 119,800 RMB for a MT model and 129,800 to 159,800 RMB for an AT model. Its sales target for 2005 is slightly more than 40,000.

The Tiida sedan: Produced in China, released in Apr. 2005.

■Tiida (hatchback): To be released in the autumn of 2005. The model uses 1.6L HR16DE aluminum engine.

The Tiida hatchback: Produced in China and to be released in the autumn of 2005.

■Fuga: High-end model that is produced in China and is to be released in June 2005 (released in Japan in October 2004). Its Chinese name is Fengya. The model uses a 3.5L V6 new generation engine and a 5-speed AT.

The Fuga: Produced in China and to be released in Jun. 2005.

  In addition, Nissan exhibited Sunny and Teana, which new Dongfeng Motor (Dongfeng Motor Co., Ltd.) manufactures, Paladin racing car model, which Zhengzhou Nissan Automobile produces, HR16DE engine, which is developed for a Chinese specification model of the Tiida, and VQ35DE engine to be used for Teana. ■Honda exhibited new Accord, Odyssey, and CR-V, all of which it launched in the spring of 2005 as well as its hybrid technology

  Honda exhibited its products such as the new Accord, the Odyssey, and the CR-V, all of which were released in the spring of 2005. In addition, the company displayed 10 models; it set up an introduction corner for its hybrid technology to display hybrid models of the Accord and the Civic and a fuel cell vehicle FCX (three models including cut model) which is capable of starting below zero. In addition, Honda exhibited ASIMO robot, a cut model of 3.0i-VTEC engine, K24A4 engine that Dongfeng Honda manufactures, and 5-speed AT system.

Introduction of Honda's hybrid technology

■CR-V 2.0L: The 2005 model year product released on April 23, 2005 (Honda began production of CR-V at Dongfeng Honda Automobile in April 2004). The model uses a 2.0L engine and 4-speed AT. It is equipped with ABS, EBD, and driver/passenger airbag as standard equipment. Its 4WD system is Real Time DPS (Dual Pump System).

The CR-V 2.0L: 2005 model year product released in Apr. 2005.

■Accord hybrid and Civic hybrid were also exhibited

■Mazda exhibited Tribute and Mazda 6 to be produced in China and RX-8 to be imported and sold

  Mazda exhibited 14 models centered on the Tribute, which it is scheduled to begin production in China in 2005, the Mazda 6 (Japanese name: Atenza), which it plans to start production in China in 2006, and the RX-8, which it plans to start to import/sell in 2005.

■Mazda 6 Sport 5 door: Production is scheduled to begin at FAW Car in the first half of 2006.

The Mazda 6 Sport 5 door: the model uses a 2.0L engine.

■Tribute: 4-seat SUV introduced in China for the first time. Production/sales in China will begin in 2005 at the earliest. Name of the models to be produced in China and time and location for production are unknown.

The Tribute: The 4WD that uses a 2.3L DOHC engine and an AT and that is equipped with EBD/ABS.

■RX-8: 4-door sports car. The model was also exhibited at the 2004 Beijing Motor Show. Import/sales are scheduled to begin in the summer of 2005.

The RX-8: Import/sales are scheduled to begin in the summer of 2005. The model uses a rotary engine and a 6-speed MT.

■In addition to its models currently produced in China, Mazda actively exhibited its concept cars

■Mazda 323: Its Japanese name is Familia, which is produced at FAW Haima Motors. The model uses a 1.6L engine and a 5-speed MT and is equipped with ABS and EBD. The price is 113,600 RMB. There is also an AT specification model.

■Mitsubishi Motors exhibited its products including its Chinese brand model for which it provides a technical licensing to appeal its vehicles

  Mitsubishi Motors, which announced its policy to actively market Mitsubishi brand vehicles in China under its management rebuilding plan announced in January 2005, exhibited 11 Mitsubishi brand vehicles including the Pajero GLS, which it began producing in China in May 2005.

■Pajero GLS 3.8L: A 7-seat SUV which Hunan Changfeng Motor began producing in May 2005 and is released under Mitsubishi brand. The model uses a 3.8L V6 engine and a 5-speed AT. The price of the model is 384,000 RMB (70,000 RMB lower than an import model). The sales target for 2005 is 10,000.

■Grandis: 7-seat MPV which the company started importing/selling in October 2004. The model uses a 2.4L engine and a 4-speed AT. The price is 169,800 to 227,800 RMB.

The Grandis: Import/sales of the model began in Oct. 2004.

  In addition, Mitsubishi Motors exhibited its models such as Colt open model (exhibited at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show as reference exhibit) which was jointly developed with Pininfarina based on the former Colt European model, a 2.4L engine/4-speed AT model of the Galant, whose 3.8L V6 engine model was introduced in the North American market in the autumn of 2003, Lancer Evolution IX, a high-performance sports sedan released in Japan in March 2005, Pajero Evolution, Champion car of Paris Dakar Rally 2005, and Pajero(T2)TEAM MITSUBISHI RALLIART CHINA's model which participated in Paris Dakar Rally 2005.

  Moreover, the company actively exhibited its models manufactured as a Chinese brand for which it provides a technical licensing.

■Exhibition of models produced by Soueast Motor (Fujian) and Hunan Changfeng Motor based on Mitsubishi models'technology

  In addition, Mitsubishi Motors exhibitied products such as 2005 models of Pajero Sport/Outlander which are produced at Beijing Jeep and MIVEC (sequential valve timing mechanism: Mitsubishi Innovative Valve Timing Electric Control System)engine which is produced at Shenyang Aerospace Mitsubishi Engine Mfg. to be used for Outlander which is manufactured by Beijing Jeep (the engine meets Euro III emission standards).

■Suzuki participated in the Shanghai Auto Show for the first time, exhibiting its products such as Liana and Swift, which it plans to start producing

  Suzuki, which participated in the Shanghai Auto Show for the first time, exhibited 12 finished vehicles (four of which were reference exhibit) and 1 new engine centered on the latest versions that it produces at Chongqing Changan Suzuki in Chongqing and Jiangxi Changhe Suzuki in Jiangxi province.

■Liana (sedan): Reference exhibit. A 5-seat sedan which Jiangxi Changhe Suzuki plans to begin producing in September 2005. The model uses a 1.6L aluminum engine that meets Euro III emission standard and is equipped with SRS double airbag, EBD, and ABS.

The Liana (sedan): Jiangxi Changhe Suzuki plans to begin production in Sep. 2005.

■Liana (hatchback): Reference exhibit. A 5-seat hatchback that Jiangxi Changhe Suzuki in Jiangxi province plans to begin production in Sep. 2005. The model use a 1.6L aluminum engine that meets Eurob emission standard and is equipped with SRS double airbag, EBD, and ABS. There are two specifications - 4-speed AT and 5-speed MT models.

The Liana (hatchback): Production is planned to start at Jiangxi Changhe Suziki in Sep. 2005.

■Swift: Production/sales are planned to begin at Chongqing Changan Suzuki in 2005. The model is a 5-seat sports hatchback and its Chinese name is Yuyan. The model uses a 1.3L engine and a 5-speed MT, being equipped with ABS, EBD, and SRS airbag. It is Suzuki's world strategy model and is produced in Japan, India, and Hungary.

The Swift: Production is planned to begin at Chongqing Changan Suzuki in 2005.

  In addition, Suzuki exhibited its products including Concept-X2, a concept car with a V6 engine which was displayed at the 2005 New York Motor Show, Grand Vitara XL-7 SUV that uses a 2.7L V6 engine, Jimny, a SUV with a 1.3L engine, and K14B new engine.
